A Million Dollar Idea... What do you think?

Hello Warriors,

I got this idea. It's a big one I believe, and it can be used in any niche. I think together we can make it into a billion dollar idea. I did some research to see if it is being done, but couldn't find anything. Maybe some of you know something that is similar.

Concept:

The concept is to develop niche how-to video sites, but with a twist.

For example, let's say someone searches for How to Build a Fence.

Your niche building a fence website comes up, and it's a site full of videos, how to build all different type of fencing, designs, styles, etc.

The User Clicks on Building a Wood Panel Fence Video.

=================================

When the user is on the video page they see a simple layout like the one below:

Let's Discuss the Above Design:

  • The Video Plays in the Green Area, showing the steps in building a fence.
  • The author section is where an author can advertise their details, maybe a book they wrote, their own website, etc.
  • Materials Needed, has a list of all the materials, such as wood planks, nails, sander, screwdriver, etc.
  • Steps in Text, are for those that rather read then watch a video, or for them to be printed.
  • The Comment section is self explanatory.
Let's Discuss the Revenue Streams:
(This is where it gets Interesting)

Materials Needed Section

Our first revenue stream is generated by linking materials to online affiliate stores. So, for a screwdriver, nails, etc you can be an affiliate of an online hardware store and bank on commissions when someone gets a product they don't have on the list.

Local Supply Store Ad

This takes a little work, but can be an amazing revenue stream. Here, you find local hardware stores and have their ad display when a visitor in the same geographical area comes to the site.

So If your in New York and come to the video you will see New York Hardware Store, if your in California, you see California Hard Ware Store.

This is extremely targeted advertising for the businesses, you can even include a number at the end of the video for the hardware store.

Multiple hardware stores can compete to be on the videos similar to PPC.

=====================================

So that's the basic idea and I wanted to hear your views on it, things that can make it better.

Obviously you can see this concept being done in every niche. Any how to or desperate market.

Thanks for reading.

It's a solid idea but I have to ask/point out.
    • Where do you plan on getting the videos/rights to videos from?
    • The collection process would take ages unless you employ a team of researchers.
    • It would cost a fortune if you employee a team of video production folk.
    • There are already a ton of how-to sites out there that incorporate video how-tos, what makes your idea different?
    • Would it be user submission reliant?
    • If so, why would they pick your site over the other ones that pay out on views/popularity?
I'll stop there. It's not a bad idea, just a monumental logistical nightmare unless planned out properly.

    Steve:

A better idea would be to make that a membership site.

Problem with the idea currently is, nobody is going to buy from an online hardware store when all they gotta do is get the list, and go down to the local Home Depot or Lowes and buy it there.

That's my .02 cents on that one.

Not necessarily. If the ad features a special/discount/ or other promotional tactic that would cause me to want to buy from the site advert over Home Depot.

Especially since, as a single woman, I will avoid the sexist, chauvinistic male population of Home Depot employees as much as I possibly can.

That's just my $.02 on that.

Not only that but in today's online ordering world. There are tons of free shipping offers. I'm not sure how this holds true to other areas but in my neck of the woods (southern ohio) most "local" shops can't compete with the low prices of online dealers. Tack on free shipping and it's a no-brainer.

PLUS - let's not leave out that this plan incorporates ad placements from local hardware stores for people to visit in person as well.

Way to take the wind right out of his sails and make him have to rethink and defend the idea. LOL

better to take the air out of his sails than for him to take money out of his pocket

    Hi Steve,

Im not sure about the making money side of it, I just dont think people will order there materials on line.

However if another money making method could be thought of I think it would be very useful, What im saying is the idea isnt Dead But needs abit more Brain Power

What I will say with regard to the video side of it GREAT NEWS!!

Ive had my own building company since 2002 and i regulary video what we are doing and also take lots of pics.

    Including Building (bricklaying)
    Inserting Insulation
    Electrics
    Plumbing
    Plastering
    Tiling
    roofing
    Foundations
    Damp proofing
    Rain water systems
    soffit and fascia

Ive got the lot for use with letting my potential customers Know that things are done right and they are approved by the local Regulation authority etc

    It could work

    Warmest Regards

Isn't this basically what affiliates do already?

    1.Find the question/problem
2.Give the answer (in your case the video)
3.Recommend something that will help them, and will pay you

Seems like nothing new really? Or at least that I can see?

    Hey,

How about a simple offer like.... Tell us exactly what you are doing and we will send you a full breakdown of how to do it along with the exact materials list and an up to date costing of what it will cost.

I use an internet based Building supplier to download upto date prices for things like timber, bricks and blocks etc. If someone gives me a drawing I simply put it into some software which i use and that gives me a full breakdown of the cost materials, labour and it gives me a great sales letter to post to my customer too.

It could be used just for the materials though i guess.
I have to say though, I use the online price thing just for the costing I actually go and buy elswhere as i have discounts with different suppliers depending on what product i need, this is cheaper for me than buying online but you see using the online prices is great because i know i can get them at least 20-30% cheaper elswhere once ive got the order.

    Anyway... Thanks

ChunkyNuts, is onto something there, which could eliminate your production/cost problems as well. Let people ASK for the video, then go FIND one already created on YT, and offer to do JV with the creator.

One problem I see with this is ensuring they are up to local code. I am no builder by all means but do know several of them here in CA. You would need to place a disclaimer stating that these videos are done to code in "your state here" where ever the vids wer filmed. You need to check with a professional to ensure your project is up to code.

Any way, thats my take on it...

Why not have a site about basic building how-to's, and then sell them ebook plans and projects?

I like the discussion happening here.

Note that the fence building is just an example, not necessary what NICHE I would be targeting.

I think that any idea is worth posting on here. Why? because of all the content rich replies one gets from fellow members. I think this is a marvelous way to inter connect with ideas, suggestions whether practical or not. Many a great idea started with a brainstorm and turned the founder into a multimillionaire. Great thread and I respect your foresight, this may work with a little more serious research. Never give up.
