webpage keyword vs. website keyword

ok, so i know there are 2 types of SEO (on and off-page) and i understand some of the basics of on-page SEO for a webpage but im not sure i understand how to rank my website for a paticular keyword phrase.

if i want to rank my website for the keyword blue widgets, do i need to have that phrase on every single page of my website?

if my backlinks lead to my homepage does my homepage need to contain the keyword im trying to rank my website for ?

i've always heard that webpages are ranked NOT websites, however i see tons of backlinks pointing to a website homepage in forums....

thanks,

Primary keyword should be the keyword of your homepage. The rest of the keywords must be the keywords that you're trying to rank for. They're known as web pages. Your homepage + your web pages = Website.

If www . example . com has a primary keyword "Rank me on top" then your home page should contain "rank me on top" in the title and in the content. If you want get the keyword "rank me on top" for your website to the top of a search engine you've to link back www . example . com with anchor text "rank me on top".

If you have a secondary keyword called "rank me please" at www . example . com /page.htm then you've to link back to www . example . com / page.htm with anchor text "rank me please". Make sure you've got the secondary keyword in the title and content of page.htm

    Hope this helps
