Default Warning: Conventional wisdom flip flops at times

Just because it worked, just because a well known person touts it, doesn't mean it still works. Testing is the only true answer to the question of "what works?"

Sometimes what we believe to be true isn't. It used to work, now it doesn't. For example: "Banner ads... do not work anymore." but people have found success with them again.

What are some conventional wisdoms that marketers believe and blindly follow?

I can think of only a few before morning coffee, but...

1. Red Headlines
2. No Direct linking to CPA offers
3. Duplicate Content

Others??

This reminds me of one of the sayings my old mentor (Dan Pena) used to use:

19. Conventional wisdom is almost always wrong.

His full list is here: Dan Pena - Penaisms
