Remember back when every website had a guestbook? Anyone here still using one?

I used to have one on my personal website back when I was actively working as a musician. Eventually it became too much work to keep the spammers deleted (this was before spam filters became the norm) so I removed it. These days I think guestbooks in general have been replaced by "The Wall" on Facebook.

    Hello,
they were lots of fun when they first started.
Then the spam and the trolls came out of the woodwork.

One of the first "marketing" ebooks I ever saw was about how to, basically, spam guestbooks. Reminds me of the funny little homemade web pages at Geocities and other free sites that used to proliferate. Everybody had their "Sign My Guestbook" link. LOL

    Memmmmmmm-o-ries.

Oh my god that was a long time ago.

I do remember having sites with them though... oh how far we have come.

LOL! I actually DO still have one, on my oldest website (almost 10 yrs old). I didn't see the point in taking it down, and believe it or not I still get comments on it. Almost never a spam comment, unlike my wordpress blogs...probably even the spammers see it as a waste of time now.

I had a glorified guestbook on one of my sites. I had it up until late 2004/early 2005. I only took it down when I moved to a new server and never put it back up. It became one of those things I was going to get to later...

Anyway, it was a site I largely had ignored (became a backburner project), so it was surprising to see people actually using it. On top of that, it really didn't get hit by spammers.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.
