Your WP Backup might just be bad

I just finished reading a thread in here about the possibility of WP Blogs being hacked. Well one of the comments recommended making a backup.

While I agree with the comment as a whole just know that the backup maybe bad.

Let me explain.

If you go to the trouble of setting up the backup and even establish a schedule along with saving copies of the backup data then I have one question.

How do you know the data is good?

You have a 50% chance that it is good and 50% chance that it is bad.

DID YOU TEST YOUR BACKUP DATA BY TRYING TO PERFORM A RECOVERY?

Now I am just shooting from the hip here but if I were a betting man then I would be betting that the majority of people performing backups have not tested them to see if it actually recovers the data.

Shame on you if you fall in this group because you ASSUME that it will work.

I used to be a corporate IT Auditor and I got in a heated debate with a department manager about this very topic. He was responsible for a million dollar computer system with significant financial data being processed on it. The backup tapes had never been tested and a Recovery Plan was never created or tested. The final result! No data was being saved to the tapes and his department received an Unsatisfactory audit. It was not a good day for him.

So think about it.

Can you recover your site if the data is bad?

So my advice (#1) is to backup and then recover the data to a sub-domain. At the very least you can execute a 301 redirect to the backup site in the event the primary site is ever compromised.

(#2) Have a recovery plan for all of your business. Don't be caught with your pants down. Even small businesses like ours can benefit from being prepared.

Good luck!

  • I have local backups, plus everything gets mirrored to another server. Of course you have to make sure the data is copied. Takes all of two seconds.

So you can completely recover in 2 seconds? If you are talking about static data then you will probably be okay. However, if you are talking about using something like Wordpress Database Backup or WP-DBManager then you had better test it. Just my opinion and suggestion. It is far better to test and be sure than it is to find out later that it does not work.

I think local backups and remote backups can be used together to avoid this problem mentioned. No matter what way you use, there can be a problem. What we should do is to make things better and better as possible as we can.

I usually have a local copy and a remote backup copy handy with me. And for testing purposes I use the local copy, so that ways I automatically make sure that my local backup is working.

This a good thing for people to think about, alright. Of course, WP's XML file only backs up text. If you've got a graphics-heavy blog, it's not so easy. I don't know of any good way to back up to WP Media Library. Perhaps the best solution is to use an offsite image host and store each image to your HD in a proper folder before posting.

    1. How do you test your Backup?

    2. When was the last time you tried to recover from a backup?

Essentially both questions could be considered the same but what I am driving at is this. If you don't test your backup then how do you know it's good? If you have never tried performing a recovery then aren't you playing with disaster if you are relying on that backup file being okay?

I hope your site is not a biggie.

I am not trying to scare anyone. I just hope that people think of the other side (recovery) rather than becoming complacent about just doing the backups.

Also you should save your backups, I have from 3 - 6 copies (all dated of course) of backups of all my sites. Yes it does take room as I do have sites that 4gigs but I rather be safe then sorry.

I keep 3 - 6 at all times. If I have 3 of one site and then I make a backup #4 then I delete backup#1 which would be the out-of-date one anyways.

  • Lifes too short to do everything. I pay a little extra for my reseller account and my host does multiple backups including daily. Every time I've had a problem they have been able to restore the old copy in a couple of hours. Well worth the few extra dollars a month. I keep just one backup copy on hand for each site, just in case Mother Nature explodes there facility... or to make me feel more secure I forget which.

Then you have a good hosting service InternetMarketingIQ. Mine does not offer it. But then again I like some level of responsibility on my side of the fence.

I agree James. Definitely need to keep a few. Thank goodness disk space is cheap. I have my original backup so that makes about 300 or so of weekly updates. Yeah I know, my wife says I won't throw anything away.

Even in the digital world I save stuff. lol

I have a better story. Up until two years ago I still had a copy of OS2 Warp! The wife was making me clean out my basement office so that bought the big trash bin. I wish I still had it.
