Any Memberspeed Gurus around here ?

Hi All

I'm looking to develop my first big membership site using Member Speed CMS software. I want to find people who know this software inside out and that can do good designs and customisation for it.

If anyone can help I would be very grateful

Best Regards

Mark

    Hi Mark,

I purchased memberspeed when it first launched. It was meant to be this high flying all in one solution for Membership sites.

We encountered so many issues and the design module has so many limitations. It has improved vastly since the launch.

With a lot of tweaking and playing around we now have a successful membership site. There are always little nigling issues though with the software.

If you go to outsourcingforhire.com there are training videos provided.

If you have not yet purchased Memberspeed i recommend staying away from it.

It can work very well but needs a lot of customisation and technical knowledge.

In fairness their support desk is fantastic, although it does cost $197 per year.

I worked earlier this year with memberspeed.

I was only able to quickly wrap my head around it because of previous experience playing with Joomla! actually.

You can get the look done by designers here in the forum.

The back end is a bit of work, tagging and categorizing.

You need to have a solid idea on how you want the site to flow once members sign in.

Uploading video is great, but it is work! Once it is in there you can run it directly off the host.

If you are planning to upload tons of content over a long period of time, then I do recommend it.

If you are just doing a simple video course of some kind with some ebook downloads, memberspeed is more power than you will need.

It's a real pity that it's taken so long since it's inception to get it to work without too many headaches. Those of us who paid the $997 have been screwed! big time. On top of the $997 there have been the 2 x payments of $197 for the annual upgrade fees for software that really didn't perform right in the first place.

So many business models of it too --there was the $57 a month and now it's --- ah well, moving on.

I can install it, I can use it, and I can say it does have potential.
But support for it won't come cheap.
        Hi Janet

The plan I have is a big one.. and its not your standard memberhsip site either , its going to have so many 'departments' to it

What system would you use if you were me ? ( I know some of these systems are expensive ) but if you had the chouice and money was no issue :/

        Thanks for your input Janet

Make sure you read post number 5.

It is a little pricey but very robust. You will end up pulling your hair out with memberspeed and probably end up paying more in customisation, support etc.

Sure we can catch up on email. Email ad is in my user profile.

thanks for this, ill hav e alook. The problem I ahve is that the project im working on has to be able to grow and potentially grow quick and it would be useful to be able to customise things a little too.

        Thanks again Riz

        Hi Zubair

I have wishlist already but I dont htink it will be powerful enough for my 'big' project. I intend to use wish list on smaller membership sites though

          Hi Mark,

When you say departments, do you mean membership levels?
Do you want an inbuilt autoresponder / newsletter manager?
Do you want your members to offer special offers to each other?
Do you want to allow others to review items on the site?
Do you want an inbuilt shopping cart?
There is are so many variables that aren't given, it's hard to recommend any one script.

The bottom line is if money was no object, I'd hire my own programmer and have it specifically written for me.

          Regards,

          Janet

      You're a doll Janet.

If I was just starting IM today, and had downloaded MS, and someone tried to tell me it wasn't that hard, I'd try it and would have probably wound up shooting myself. LOL

Not disagreeing with you - but just want to point out it is not hard if you have some familarity with some other CMS programs to start.

Won't disagree on that one Jill,

Broke my teeth on cms with Joomla!

Having now looked a little into Marks background (WSO thread) says he did 4 years for growing "weed", I just wonder where he got the $997 from to buy memberspeed from.

Interesting what pops up here every now and again.

And Memberspeed still isn't that hard, it's like trying to swim underwater whilst reading the isntruction manual in one hand and ........ well really I just wanted to point out that any help for Memberspeed WON'T BE CHEAP. Guess I should have put that in capitols before, because that was my real point.

Jill, never been referred to as a "doll" before, what does that mean?

        Kindest regards,

        Janet

Along the lines of a real sweetheart - genuine good person from what I have encountered on your other posts here on the WF.

I personally say it about other female friends who I think are good peeps.

Although, if you get the comment from someone else, I can't speak for how they interpret it.

          Kindest Regards,

      Hi Andy,

Yes, I remember we were both there at the time.

I think a lot of people to quote you "never got happy with it" and they did infact stop using it. I guess you, like me now have something like 14 site licences to the program, but need to know how to make it different.

It was just sort of ahead of it's time. They (Jeremy and Simon) are trying to relaunch this month with another megga offer. I'm not going to say too much more because this thread will most likely self destruct.

PM me if you need help ....... always nice to see a friendly face around here.

I saw the price on the current Memberspeed promo, and actually considered it until I did some research and found the satisfaction level was dismal. I take it from some of the comments in this thread that it has improved? The URLs on the sites running it didn't look terribly SEO friendly to me.

I bought Memberspeed 2 years ago and really struggled to learn how to use it. I finally figured it out and had 3 sites running with it and then yet another upgrade would come out - it was in beta back then but I didn't realise that when I paid for it. Sometimes when I upgraded I would lose one of my sites and have to pay my host to get it back again, other times the upgrades were no problem. It was a nightmare and I ended up deciding to pay extra for the upgrades rather than mess up myself.

After a year they suddenly took my sites down because I didn't pay the service charge. When I pointed out that the service charges they were asking weren't mentioned on the original sales page I bought from and also that they had no right to take down websites on my hosting space they apologised, put them back online and offered several years free service. That was fair and the support was always very good.

Since then I have changed scripts on 2 of my sites and just have one left using memberspeed, more because I haven't decided what to do with the domain.

How difficult it is can depend upon how much experience you have with scripts and software, or just your mindset. I spoke to an experienced website designer and he couldn't get his head around it at all. There was a forum where a lot of help was available but that disappeared last year. There was some good training videos but I didn't find them extensive enough, that could have changed though.

I keep meaning to take another look at Memberspeed now that the dust has settled. I felt 2 years ago that if Memberspeed lived up to its promise then it would be a very powerful system. I think that I would have fared better with it if it hadn't been in beta and also my experience with scripts is greater now. I haven't got time right now but I think that I will try it out again soon, maybe with a different idea.

I can sympathise with your situation.

Our membership site had constant problems to begin with. And like yourself everytime we went through the upgrades we would lose or corrupt pages.

The design module was very poor. We just recently had the sites design changed by a web developer that was a long time in the finding. He told us that memberspeed have made things more complicated than they needed to be.

Most of the web developers (including the one i regulary use) could not get their head around working with memberspeed.

One good thing came from using memberspeed - i quickly concluded that my technical skills suck and i need professionals to outsource to :-)

It's up to the person uploading the content to SEO the crap out of each submission.

For instance, I uploaded a few different video series. Each individual video needed to be SEO'd with keywords, descriptions, etc. It wasn't like wordpress where you can just tick off words you've used before. Each piece added to the site needs to be spoonfed into the system. If you do it right, the SEO will be fine.
