Whats Cpanel and fantastico

Hey Guys,

I have a few websites etc using 1and1 internet im not sure how popular it is or if you have even heard if it. (im no techy expert)

Anyway alot of what ive been reading lately is all about CPanel and in particular fantastico, would someone please give me a simple explanation of what it is what it does and why so many things i read are telling me its a must have.

I will be lauching a new product soon and i will be basically producing a squeeze page and a web/sales page.

Would having CPanel and fantastico be of any use? As i say i currently use 1and1 for about 6years and havnt come across this until the last month or so. It just seems to be showing up more and more.

Please fill me in if you can
Warm Regards

Chunkynuts

PS i will be selling a physical product which will have a free bonus inside this will send them to a squeeze page before collecting the bonus.

cpanel is a interface that most web hosts use for you to administer your websites. I.E. create email accounts, databases and sub domains.

Fantastico is also used by most hosting company's and this lets you it easy install apps on your websites like workdpress and forums.

      I have ftpophobia.

I have used the cpanel primarily to navigate around the back end of my host, upload files, edit sales pages, install scripts (using simplescripts - although my cpanel has fantastico as well) and create new email accounts, etc.

Fantastico is a few clicks install for programs like wordpress. But like I said, I use a different program for that.

There are different looks and interfaces as far as cpanels go.

different hosts will have different versions of cpanel installed. If you get your own server, you can install your own cpanel.

It is basically a cockpit to your host.

well cpanel is basically were u can keep track of your ftp accounts, create databases, and take a look at the visitors coming to your website (google analytic is better for that).

now fantastico i don't have much experience with but i think in over all its a program installed onto your hosting for you to be able to install specific scripts and programs onto your hosting without doing any FTP work and at ease for example installing wordpress, or phpnuke, etc

1&1 is notorious for not having cpanel.
and you need cpanel to have fantastico.

    They do make things simpler.

What have you been doing with your webhosting all this time?

I do script installations on a variety of hosts, not just hosts with cpanel & fantastico.
(In fact, Sam Stephens was impressed that I did a DLguard install on DreamHost...).
If you need some help, let me know.

I have done a few things on 1&1.

Most of the hosting companies who don't have cpanel/fantastico
(GoDaddy, 1&1, DreamHost and Verio being among the ones most famously that don't; I think some dedicated hosts may also still be using Plesk, but not sure about that.)
have something that they believe is better.

1&1 is a rather famous and large hosting company that at one point (don't know whether this is still true) was one of the largest hosting companies in Europe.
