your computer or network may be sending automated queries

I'm getting a TON of freeze outs from google lately.

Granted it's usually when I'm doing keyord reasearch, but I even got shut down for searching for 20 universities in the uk one after another.

Have they cracked down, got a watch list that they hammer harder (ie coz I'm doing keyword reasearch more) or what?

And how would blocking automated searches help protect their users?

We're sorry...

... but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users, we can't process your request right now.

It protects their users by making sure the sites are available for them.
If Google allowed everyone and their brother to scrape Google's results (which is a violation of Google's TOS, btw) -- Google's even ginormous resources would be gobbled up quickly.

But mostly it's an issue of
    - keeping people from abusing Google's TOS
    - keeping the resources used per person at an equitable level.

If you're doing automated searches, that would be part of your answer -- don't do automated searched.

If you have set up your browser to increase the speed of the browser by allowing multiple connections from your browser (Firefox has a setting for this, don't recall what it is) -- that can also trigger this response (had it happen to me.)

It used to happen to me all the time so I finally gave in and started using proxies, problem solved. Something that I found interesting though is after they first started giving me the whole automated queries error, the next time it worked the domain rankings I was doing automated queries for was way off when using my regular ip, like they changed the results on purpose to jack with me but only on my ip. But when I immediately switched to a proxy ranking were back to normal.
