Is it POSSIBLE at all to EARN money using JUST free blog/ free site?

Warriors!
HOW DO YOU THINK - is it POSSIBLE to earn money by using JUST & only! free web sites? (- WITHOUT having your own sites which aren't free) - According to a common point of view, THIS'S IMPOSSIBLE.
However, our society has A LOT OF MYTHS, & I believe this one is just another myth. (For example, NO state in the world is interested if its citizens are absolutely healthy. Because this is a HUGE MARKET which brings a lot of profits. Therefore states just aren't interested in absolutely healthy citizens - NEVER - rather visa versa. )
So, we live in too many myths in real life.
IF THIS MYTH about free web sites EXISTS - THEN SURELY SOMEONE NEEDS IT. And who needs it?-Well, for example, those people who sell you hosting & domain names.
SO, let's prove the truth here ALL TOGETHER:
If You know just any example where You know for sure! that FREE web sites EARN MONEY - please, put these examples here, at least describe them. Let's find the truth here
!
And just imagine - how much money you'll be able to save !!!!! if You prove that this is a myth - for yourself first : )
(PS: What I mean here isn't using free web blogs as additional tool to promote your own site - but as a main tool).
PPS: And You personally - will you buy something at a free site, if You see that you like its content, & see you don't risk here with your money, etc, etc, etc. AFTER ALL, there are SO! MANY not free sites, which actually just want to sell you something without a proper quality. - Then why are high-quality, but free sites worse?
all the best!

Possible? Yes. Probable? No. You don't own a free site and could lose it at the drop of a hat. Plus.........no credibility.

Absolutely possible. With out a doubt. I have seen it with my own eyes.

      Blogger and weebly.

Now, the big question is, is it wise to do all your marketing this way, and can you progress to a higher level and great income only with free sites?

That is dangerous, and not advisable.

You can start free as a stepping stone to learn, but you should not use it for long term if you are serious.

I have never seen a weebly page ranking in the SERPS. Are they easily SEO'd? Comparing blogger and weebly in regards to ranking, which of the two rank better?

I think by free site you mean something like a blogger blog! Well, yes you can make quite good off them. What you need is just a little bit (500+ UV) traffic. Place ads on you are all set to mint the gold!

Because you can make a lot more money doing it with your own website... It's all about "increasing your income" and expanding, leveraging, moving to bigger better ways...

I know probably 25 ways I can make money, but why should I spend time on the method that takes the most time and gives the least return?

No, work on the one that brings you the most money for the least amount of time...

That's why it's kind of funny how people keep selling their $7 books (ONLY, not those with backends and stuff)... it's not a FAST way... quite the opposite.

$1,000 sale = what, 150 sales of the $7 ebook or something...

The Weebly site I saw making money was getting it completely from article marketing. They guy was making several hundred dollars on his niche and had created a 5 page mini site where traffic was directed to the site through the sig box.

All I've got to say is:

      Strobist

One of the best known photography blogs on the internet. And he monetizes the hell out of it with both ads and his own "line" of products, which are just rebranded products from another photo shop.

He also has a huge cult following and has done it all on a blogger.com platform. He's one of the most credible lighting experts in the industry and has even created a solid brand. In fact, whenever anyone uses off camera lighting in the form of camera flashes (not studio lights, like mountable flashes) most people will put in their "strobist" information.

      Even still...

Could google shut him down? Yeah... they could.

Will they? No way. He's adding VALUABLE content and not using crap ways of marketing his site. He's got a strong referral base and probably doesn't market the site much at all actually, he lets his followers handle that.

      What made him successful?
Posting great quality content to a hungry audience.

You can also find answers to this at A VERY INTERESTING thread by Andi_gt2005
which is called something like " $6,000 / month in 40 days "

However, the main point of the thread is this: no, it is NOT necessary to have your own - NOT free - site to earn money

There is nothing to prove...lol Many of us that have been here 10, 12, 15, and 20 years all started on a "Free Site" - tripod, geocities, fortunecity and etc... We started with $0 and built a business from there.

The thing is you must invest in your business when you are able to do so. A free site does not exactly make your possible customers whip out the wallet when you are selling a solution to make money, or you claim to be a high end designer, or you sell many affiliate products.

While you perfectly can start on $0 you also must have a plan and goals set forth to expand and build your business and that includes getting a domain name and hosting as soon as possible.

It is VERY possible to make money with a free site. I love Blogger. And before I started using Wordpress (and self hosting my blogs), I used to use Blogger a lot.

I have this one Blogger blog that's about a year old. It is just one blog post. It is targeted around a medical condition that isn't very common. But the keyword phrase I found was just too good to pass up.

It doesn't get much traffic, but it has consistently made me $10-$20 every month for the past year in Adsense income.

Now, that doesn't sound like much at first. But when you consider that its just one blog post (and one Ezinearticle promoting it), that's not bad. I have spent about 2 hours total on the Blogger blog, and it has roughly made me $326 so far (and will probably continue to do so for the indefinite future.

I haven't done anything else with it in terms of adding new blog posts or marketing because I spend virtually all of my time doing freelance keyword research for Warriors. And with the little free time that I do have, I spend that working on my niche blogs (self hosted with Wordpress).

So to answer your question: Yes, it is definitely possible to make money using free websites (like Blogger).

    Much Success,

I am actually going to do an experiment on this subject just for the heck of it.

I´m going to write an article on a given niche. Im going to get some article spinning software or website I´ve seen mentioned recently obn this forum and spin it a hundred times. Ill get roboform, fill a profile on it. I will do a search i conducted a couple of hours ago again on google:

      "Revenue sharing websites"

I believe I found a page that listed 100 of them. I´m going to sign up to all of them, post one article in each and then do the standard promotion run (we´ve all seen that mentioned before here).

And then I will keep you posted.

I will be starting in about two hours time, when I´m done with what I´m doing at the moment.

I've made my first dollars with free sites, squidoo and blogger plus articles. I used the money to buy domains and hosting. However, if you start directly with your sites you build them faster. However, some people are just sceptic that you can do money and start with free stuff first.

Yes. Lots of people, myself included, have made money from free sites like Blogger and Squidoo, Hubpages, etc. (In fact, somebody just posted here yesterday about making his first Clickbank commission from a Hubpage). You should still invest your efforts in building up your own assets, not someone else's site that's free, but could be "smacked" or shut down at any time.

    Blogger is king!

First off, I have free sites that directly make me money, but I also had a friend who wanted to get in on this MMO industry, and the first places I sent him to get started were Blogger.com + Google Keyword tool, I also gave him a quick overview of analyzing the SERPs, and helped him apply for adsense.

He made a blog around football, and posted daily or whenever he could, about things like boots, shirts, and other very specific topics, which had people searching for them, but no high competitors in the SERPs. He was generating adsense income within 3 weeks, and continues doing so to this day from that same blog!

So that is a big fat YES to your question, But James has very good points which need to be considered in the long run.

      Yes, most definitely.

I have seen too many such examples. Blogspot, blogger, livejournals are all the rage.

Simply blogging about something interesting (e.g, travel photographs of exotic places, or make up for females, etc) using free websites and tools all CAN be attention grabbing, loyalty building (due to the interesting content) and money making (adsense, recommending affiliate products after awhile).

If you are worried about SEO, well, SEO is not the only marketing solution. Traditional marketing via word of mouth, etc are all also possible.

Imagine if your free blog is picked up and printed in your local newspaper. How much publicity and traffic will you have?

Jesus, it's not about what website you have or don't have. I make money with TinyUrl + YouTube without ANY WEBSITE whatsoever...

Can people stop this whole "free website crap"? It's like $150 to get a domain and hosting for a year... It's not that much... It will give you 10x the probability of making sales, but sure you can make money from only free resources... Not suggest, at all.

Instead focus on how you can build a BIG BUSINESS... Quit the whole "hobby website thing", it's totally useless. It just means you are not serious from the beginning and should probably not even do it. Don't have $10? Get a job until you do and regsiter yourwebiste.com, trust me, it's a lot smarter.

Then build a list from the start as well, at least in your main niches. I've got many where I don't, but they are just "pay for memberships" websites that bring in a couple hundred to pay for hosting, aweber, 1shoppincart, unique article wizard, traffic geyser etc.

Most of my online income is from free sites. It is not all that hard either.

Since I am making some money now I am starting building on my own domains. Still I use free websites to bring in the traffic and SEO benefits.

Build a Squidoo lens about something that is not to spammy and build links from article directories and such and you will start to make money after a while. It is all about consistency. I do not have much of that.
    {{ DiscussionBoard.errors[1432501].message }}

As others have said, sure. It is absolutely possible, and for some, perhaps it is NECESSARY to start out this way.

If it is...great. You now know that it is possible, and all it takes is focused, consistent action to get you there.

The crux of the matter is...once you ARE making money, why would you want to allow your business to continue to rest on a foundation you do not own and control?

Let's say you build up a FANTASTIC business in the "getting your ex back" niche (NOT a niche I have, or want anything to do with, btw...just an example), and your business is based on a series of Squidoo lenses.

People just love them, you get lots of traffic, and you're getting reliable sales.

Then one day, Squidoo sends you a polite e-mail informing you that they now consider "get your ex back" to be spam, and in an effort to keep their overall quality high, they've decided to disable your lenses.

So sorry...just like that, and with one push of a button, you are essentially out of business and have to start over.

Had you purchased your own domain at some point, you'd have a much more stable foundation to build, expand, and grow from.

      Think it can't happen?

It sure can, and based on the recent moves we've seen by Squidoo, Hubpages, and EZA, it certainly will happen in the future.

Again, if you're dead broke and absolutely need to get started that way, it's open, available, and it works.

But once you're making some money, reinvest in your business. Buy some domains and get full control.

      It's very cheap insurance.

        Hey, WARRIORS!
HUGE THANKS to everybody for Your awesome posts!
So, mostly the results are these: NOBODY out of You respects these sites much
but to earn money with free sites & blogs IS A PIECE OF CAKE.
e.g., Jeremy Kelsall says: " Until about 6 months ago, all of my sites were on "free sites" and I made a nice chunk of cash....
Enough to take care of my family - COMFORTABLY".
        However, he continues:
" IF I HAD IT TO DO OVER AGAIN, WOULD I DO IT THE SAME WAY?

PROBABLY NOT. " - Thanks, Jeremy, for this!
Next. The absense of contol of free sites IS NOT the MAIN reason why people don't respect them much
        the main reason is MONEY:
Chris Stigson says: "why should I spend time on the method that takes the most time and gives the least return?
No, work on the one that brings you the most money for the least amount of time..." -

focus on how you can build a BIG BUSINESS... Quit the whole "hobby website thing", it's totally useless. It just means you are not serious from the beginning and should probably not even do it
        THANKS FOR THIS, CHRIS!
        - so, the biggest profits will be mostly NOT from free sites - this is the reason
(however, I assume there always can be an exception - why not?)

I wish success to ALL of You!

and as Chris Stigson advises :
"Quit the whole "hobby website thing", it's totally useless. It just means you are not serious from the beginning and should probably not even do it...
Work on the one that brings you the most money for the least amount of time..."

Don't kid yourself. If you're using various forms of shared hosting you don't have "full control" either. I've known several people who've gotten the quick boot from Dreamhost and other hosting companies over trival things, like using the All-in-One SEO or Sitemap WordPress plugins.

If you're using somebody else's data center, you don't have full control either. I know someone who's online business is in shambles right now because their virtual server didn't get backed up properly. Others have had accounts and servers pulled for supposed TOS violations (usually stemming from spam complaints against them).

So, I guess you're saying one should invest a few million dollars in their own corporate datacenter and/or have ironclad contracts with a top co-location provider in order to be really 'serious'.

Okay, yes...any time you're using someone else's server, you are technically giving up at least some control.

          HOWEVER...

Having acknowledged that, I think you will agree that you're significantly LESS LIKELY to encounter that sort of trouble than you are to run afoul of a Squidoo policy change, or an EZA change (see the recent spate of both).

If we can at least agree on that much, then I think you'll find that we're probably not terribly far apart.

I was thinking more about Blogger where people regularly exaggerate problems with it.

My point is that most of us are running a small, sole proprietorship, businesses here and we can't afford the kind of infrastructure even a smallish corporation can. So, we have to take what we can get and mitigate risk by maintaining a level of diversity.

Although it isn't the most direct way to make money for "free", you could give away your content to a site like eHow. There are lots of people who make decent money using that site.

Now personally I think you're better off with your own domain but it can be done in other ways.

Here's a very cheap plan to get you started. Someday you'll value your time and won't consider this "cheap" but for now....

    1. Do your keyword research with the free Google Tools (https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal)

    2. Buy a domain (OMG I said buy something. If you buy a good one, that can be the last investment you make.) It can be done with a free Blogger blog but seriously, $10 bucks? Mow a yard. Panhandle. Deliver pizzas. Write for Warriors. Sell an eyeball.

    3. Host at Blogger and use your domain - strip the Blogger bar off and fix the layout to look like it's yours.

    4. Start writing content. No matter what your strategy is: niche clickbank products, Adsense, Blogging, whatever, you'll need to make content. Personally I think article marketing is the best bang-for-buck here. Other people have success with other methods but realistically this one is SIMPLE. Don't forget your on and off page SEO basics, of course.

Repeat #4 ad. infinitum. until you sell "a bunch of stuff" and can reinvest in more infrastructre and some bells and whistles.

OR you could just JV with someone and piggyback off their domain for a cut of profits or something. Get creative.

      JACK MORRISON / UM1001!
      thanks a lot!
      I explore here another thing:

IF SUCCESS IS THE SAME (with free site or not free) - THEN WHY NOT to use free resources? - it is wise!
HOWEVER, most Warriors say that NOT FREE sites CAN BRING much more money & in less time THAN FREE ones
Therefore to save our time is super wise - because our life is not endless

THEREOFRE THOSE WHO WANT REALLY BIG PROFITS - They won't build their empire on free sites solely

But thanks for everybody, because here I proved one thing to myself:
if you aren't ambitious, then USE free resources because you CAN earn enough money for comfortable life JUST WITH FREE SITES.
      - We see lots of free sites which are popular & rather OLD today.

However, life is not endless - so let's save our own time
these quotes by Chris Stigson again says all
"Your own site will give you 10x the probability of making sales",
      And :
"Quit the whole "hobby website thing", it's totally useless. It just means you are not serious from the beginning and should probably not even do it...
Work on the one that brings you the most money for the least amount of time...""

Alright, this has already been said here, but just wanted to drive this point home.

I used to use free tactics, made a good $2,000 doing it too. But nothing beats owning your own website and product with your own list as I later figured out.

Make this a business. Not a hobby.

It is possible. Of course it is possible.

Even the guy who makes his living on tips for washing your windshield usually gets his own squirt bottle and rag though.

He invests in those tools because he makes a lot more money by owning the bare essential assets for running a windshield washing service.

Is it possible without those tools? I'm sure it is. You could scoop up some rain water and smear it on the windshield and then wipe it off with your sleeve.

    But why would you?

Not only is it possible to earn money using nothing
but free resources, it can be done with very little
effort indeed. Think about having a system that
works, and you apply it consistently.

If you spent ten minutes a day adding content for
one blog, and then re-purposing it for another blog,
you now have content for two blogs, but not twice
as much work. This is quite common practice, but
not something I do myself thought.

I use Blogger in several different niches to drive traffic and to capture leads for my autoresponder. Possible - Yes. Probable for most? - NO.

If you are trying to use free sites to get sales for heavy traffic keywords - you don;t have a chance... well - you do but it could take you 5 years of posts on a free blog.

If you are operating in obscure niches (the most profitable in my opinion), you have a very good chance and a very good chance of making money fast(er).

This is just ABSOLUTELY false !! I can personally attest from my own experience that this is a notion that needs to be dispelled because it is inaccurate.

If you dont believe me just check out Griz at www.makemoneyforbeginners.blogspot.com and Allen at Make Money Online as they would beg to differ with you quite vehemently !!

Both reached the Top 2 Spots at Google for 'Make Money Online' in less than 1.5 years !!
I have also done the same thing with my Free Blogger Blogs !!

      THATS FACT !!

Of course it is possible, a lot of people start off with free blogs and once they become popular enough, they switch over to their own domain... I started with free blogs because I could experiment more and learn the ropes without worry about being able to afford my domain.

Yes, it's possible. Why you think not?
I have many many blogger blogs. Some of them earn me $1 daily, some 0.10$ some $3 , some much more (multiply and to the math). I have some of them with high page rank and making hundreds monthly. All for free! There is only a problem with that: tomorrow blogger could block everything...you don't really own them.
But, back to your question, yes it's really possible

Hi, You can make money with free sites, however it does leave you vulnerable if that particular company goes bust. I would only reccomend this option if you are a newbie who is not committed to the process. Hosting is so cheap now it is worth being in control and you can still use free software to create the content itself.
