Default Instant Gratification Syndrome

After spending some time on the WF today reading some of the threads, I have finally put a name to what most peoples problems are.

Yes, there are those who are exceptions, and those exceptions are the ones making a sustainable income online.

Instant Gratification. We all want it, and want it now!!

Maybe from our culture, or from the hype(or both), we have all become accustomed to having the ability to getting what we want asap. Want to watch a movie? It's instant...pay per view, netflix, itunes, you name it we have access immediately. Fast food, convenience stores...you name it we can get it now. And IM is no different.

Yes, you can make money today. Will it be enough...probably not. Will it be sustainable or re-occuring...doubtful.

The common trait amongst those that are doing very well is that their "system" took time and effort. Most of us are not afraid to put in effort, but the "time" aspect seems to be the hang up.

We sit back with a new "system" look at it, and as soon as it looks like it may take weeks or months of effort before yielding results...we shy away. "What if I put in all of this effort and the time becomes wasted time because it doesn't work or I can't do it?". Question I have asked myself.

My eventual answer was "So What?". During that time I would have gained tons of experience that helped me on the next thing, or I would have learned what not to do and put myself closer to success by learning from my mistakes.

What's ironic is if we actually put forth the time and effort into something as opposed to hunting for that "right" system, we would all be successful. Hell, how much time have you spent today alone reading the WF looking for that system just right for you? (hint: It doesn't exist)

Everything out there will work if you work it. Instant Gratification Syndrome is preventing you from making the type of money you want. We all know nothing is easy, or at least thats what we say, but deep down inside we still gravitate towards something that can make us money overnight.

"Time" doesn't mean years, and to be honest, most "time" spent will be on learning the ins and outs of programs, applications, or websites. Once you have the technical aspects down good enough, the rest boils down to hard (focused) work and a little time for your efforts to pay off.

There is no pill for IGS, its all in your head. Some people have been posting here for 6 months to a year and not made squat online, but have hundreds if not thousands of posts. If you put as much effort into one thing as you did looking here or posting, you would have already tasted success.

Not sure if my ramblings are making any sense, but I hear so often about people being lazy, but I tend to try and see the positive in people and think that they are not lazy, they just are so used to getting "it now" that they feel they shouldn't have to work so damn hard. These same so called "lazy" people also will spend 40 hours a week at a job...that's not lazy, is it?

There is no gravy train thats waiting for you to hop on and ride it...you have to build your own train...

Ok, I'm done babbling

Fantastic post. I would like to add something to this conversation:

The very nature of human beings is instant gratification. Even a few hundred years back, the average lifespan of a human being was just 40 years. In Jesus time, it was only 20 years. Humans needed to grow only until they could reproduce. In the caveman period, it was even worse.

Our mind evolved in those times...

We have changed so much in the past 100 years... suddenly we live so long and we are able to accumulate wealth and safeguard it.

If a caveman wanted to store food, he couldn't (no refrigerators)... if he did not eat it immediately and someone would grab it from him. The idea of saving food for tomorrow did not exist.

In Jesus times, men had no idea & no way to save money. There were no systems like CD, or real estate investment for a common man, so the obvious thing was to spend it on basic needs.

TODAY, WE HAVE TO DO THINGS THAT DOES NOT MAKE SENSE TO OUR (PRIMITIVE) BRAIN.

We have to think long term... and the term "long term" is something very new to our chimp brain.

Be we CAN Learn... that our only hope

Hope it was useful.

Why do I suddenly want a banana?

Keith

Too true. Instant gratification is a major problem.

Keith you are absolutely right. Part of the reason I battle with too many projects and fail to focus enough on each at a time.

I think that is the major hurdle in IM: to overcome this and other self-development self-created obstacles.

This is precisely why when I hear someone say "TAKE ACTION", I just laugh. That may be the biggest obstacle for some but for most it is exactly what you describe.

Keith,

Any way you could boil down the OP to one or two sentences? It looks like I'll have to use the scroll bar to read it all.

Just askin'...

Oh, nice... it's bad enough when I'm made fun of on the Geico commercials, but now the WF? WTF!
