So the keyword ive been going for had a 60k broad search volume for october

however when i look it up under exact with the adword tool its only about 100

did i f up? does that mean only 100 people a month search using that term? whats the difference ?

What it means is that all of the searches that contain the keyword totals up for 60k / month. People are using the keyword in other phrases to find what they are looking for - not the word by itself.

What you need to do now is add the broad term into your keyword search tool and find the phrases that this term is actually used in. Change your results to Exact and go for the higher ones.

A lot of people underestimate the power of starting research with the Broad term. It really lets you get an overall view of the viabilty of a niche. Keep drilling down and switching between broad and exact to find the phrases that are easy to rank for.

      thank you

i think i need to restart completely though. i already got the domain name, made a wordpress, added over 100 backlinks to it, and have been seeing it rise in the ranks the past weeks. wont do much good if its on page one for the keyword phrase i used though. newbie mistake.

lets say your keyword is "stop dog biting"

Here are examples of broad and exact:

    BROAD
    - can a dog stop biting people
    - my dog is biting and won't stop
    - why does my dog like biting even when I say stop

    EXACT
    - I need help to stop dog biting
    - how to stop dog biting
    - To stop dog biting is easy

Broad can contain the keyword/phrase in any order, and mixed with other words inbetween.

Exact will only count the keyword/phrase as long as it's searched in that order, and if words are before or after, not inbetween.

So, the chances are you have not messed up, it's just a lower amount of that phrase being searched for in that exact order, which is very normal.

    Make sense?

ohhh i get it thank you

so even though its not going to be as many views as i expected, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be as low the 100 ?

Well, it depends on what you optimise for, and how you rank.

If you optimise for the exact keyword/phrase (which you should) and you rank well for it, then you may also rank for other phrases which contain your keyords, so you could get more traffic.

But the number of people actually searching for your exact phrase, can be that low, so 100 searches may be all you will benifit from.

Well if the work has been done, then I would just leave it at that, as 100 exact searches is a very low number to target, and unless it is a high converting keyword, or has some spikes in trends, I personally would not have even considered it worth the time.

    Good Luck Anyways!
