Is there a limit at how much word a domain should have to be "effective"? The more words, the more targeted or is it best to stop at 2 or 3? |

Depends what you mean by "effective" Personally I don't like those super long domain names. It's best to have a domain name that's catchy and makes people interested to actually visit your site. On the other hand, having keywords in your domain name can help you get ranked for those keywords. So that's what I meant what I said "it depends on what you mean by effective" |

I would suggest not to go for more than three words for domain name selection.

I agree. Definitely not more than 4, that would be way too long.

Hi. There are no rules. The most important is that the domain name is describing the website its present in a good way, and that it is easy to remember and to write. Don't let it to be to long. Try to make it as short as possible. - Oddvar. |

Not more than 2. I have seen many 3 word nice long tail domains on Sedo but no one is bidding for them. |

I agree with the general consensus here. That is, to keep the domains short and snappy. I do have a few longtail keywords domains of more than 4 words but recommend that you make sure they are easily readable! See below for overkill: whattodoifyouarerunoverbyabus.com Note the double tt's, the 'byabus' and the adjoining vowels which dont look so good! IMHO |

Depends on the intention of the domain name. Sometimes you might want a little bit longer domain to rank for certain keywords, like "how to get your ex back dot com" wouldn't be too bad of a domain name, although "get your ex back dot com" would probably be better. I would try try to avoid "useless words" such as "to", "from", "the" etc, which get truncated by Google searches, so "pickuplinestowomen.com" which I own, doesn't show up for "pick up lines to women" since it removes "to" from the doman name. - Chirs |

As has been mentioned above, intent has a lot to do with the right answer. If you're looking at it from the standpoint of a domain investor, then going for a long domain name is not a great choice, generally. That said, if it's long but gets serious search volume, or is a grammatically correct generic "buyer term" and passes the "radio test" -- ie. if you close your eyes and say the name can you see it in your mind and know how to spell it and type it -- then it is probably not a bad idea to pick it up. Another subjective consideration is whether or not you are buying the domain as a standalone item or part of a larger endeavour. In the geo markets in which I work I have many domains that are preposterously long, but they are tied into a larger network of related sites and were really purchased just to grab a little extra SEO edge (links and content trump domain, but having an exact match domain with notable search volume doesn't hurt.) I usually choose a website name that is brandable.. I'd rather have a good site name and have to do a bit more seo...

LOL I agree 13 is the way to go... I think it all depends on the niche/words... Id say no more than 3, and the shorter the better... |

If you're doing niche marketing and and people are searching for "Black 24v air compressor unit" you will want to get that as a domain. Simple really, for branding purposes keep it short, but if you do niche marketing like I do, you will use all the words needed. |
