Explaining Internet Marketing

Just got off Facebook chat with a good friend of mine I hadn't had a real conversation with in forever.

I told her that I've got a solid plan to get back on my feet, and instead of dwiddling my thumbs hoping it will work, I'm excited for it to work.

I tell most people the things I do online are school-related so nobody asks me any questions, but this is a good friend, so I give her a small summary of things some people do. I tell her that a lot of people don't know this, but goliath companies such as Amazon, eBay, Barnes & Noble, etc. actually pay people to promote their products - put a widget on your website, when someone buys from your link you get paid.

I also tell her you can get paid by generating leads, or quality traffic, to certain sites as well. The companies who provide this opportunity are a little more strict than pay-per-sale in order to prevent fraud, but done right, this is extremely lucrative.

Most people's eyes would glaze over when they hear this stuff, but while she admitted she didn't fully understand, she acknowledged its potential and that it "sounds like a great way to make money".

I don't expect most of my friends to understand everything I do, at least at this point, but maybe later I can help her get started. Felt pretty good to have even a complete outsider's support, so I thought I'd share.

    Awesome

Yes you're right, most people just give me a blank stare when I tell them what I do.

Have one friend who has developed programs for main frames for about 30+ years.
Can talk to him, when I get the chance.
No one else I know has a clue.....I don't try.....after all...how many blank stares can you take?

I just tell anyone who asks me that I'm in marketing (leave out the internet part) and they usually get that I'm into business.

If they ask more questions, I just show them instead of telling them, it helps them understand faster and I don't get have to answer so many questions.

Smart freakin' idea to say "marketing & business". I usually say "entrepreneur", which again raises more questions, but I think I'll just say "marketing" from now on.

I have tried to explain it like 200 times to my mother and she still doesn't explain it, so I made a parallel, like, "I hand out coupons on the streets to go buy a hair cut, and if they use my coupon I get paid %%% of that barbers haircut", but I hand out the flyers online. She kind of understood that concept then...

It's just a similarity, yet not the same at all =) (They create and deliver the product/service, I get paid to bring them business)
