How does Google measure your backlinks?

Hi warriors,

I have doing some research on keywords and when I'm checking out the top websites with different Alexa/Pr rank/link checkers they show different results. Espaccilally with the links.

Some tools only use Google links, others use totals of Google - Yahoo - Msn - dmoz - Altavista together, and some use average numbers calculated by the total amount of backlinks divided by the amount of directories and search engines they found them on.

So I was wondering how Google is reading your website? What methode are they using? When you take the examples above you have three totally different numbers for one site.

Anybody?

Cheers
Bjorn

As far as I know the spiders go over your pages and note the links to other sites etc. I think the value is mainly in your keywords but of course links also matter as the value others place on your site is important.

Don't know if this answers your question or not.

No-one knows. It's part of their special sauce.

They don't show all links so there's no way to tell. When you build links they'll only show a small percentage of them in their stats.

Don't waste your time thinking about it.

    Hi Bjorn,

Yeah you can go crazy trying to figure out what makes some links stick in Google and others not. That's the kind of stuff that really makes their algorithms tick though, so it's likely they'll never ever reveal it.

One thing I do know though, is that for inbound links they only count domains once. So if you have a million links coming from squidoo lenses or whatever, they're only going to take note of one of them.

    Hope that helps

Google only reveals a sample of a websites backlink profile... that's probably why you'll get different numbers when comparing to yahoo and msn.

Depending on the sector (google is more strict with competitive sectors) backlinks are valued by google by looking at:

    relevancy of the PAGE
    age of the PAGE
    backlinks to that PAGE
    traffic the link generates
    pagerank of the PAGE
trust of the SITE the PAGE is on
    anchor text of the LINK

in no order really... and that's just my opinion from experience and speaking to various other SEO's. but I don't even want to try and figure it out, one simple method has always worked for me in SEO.

"Write content, throw links into content."
