Internet Marketing Friends?

I know a lot of internet marketers like to work alone. That's because they work better that way. I think I may be one of them. But what do you think about having IM friends?

By IM friends I mean other IMers with whom you...

- hang around
- build a relationship
- chat
- discuss ideas
- test each others stuff
- get help/give help
- maybe even promote each others stuff

BUT you don't necessarily work together with. Make sense?

I think it's a great idea. I know some marketers already do this.

I wouldn't mind getting to know a few marketers like that and building a good relationship with them.

What about you?

Thanks,
Adam

I thought all that was a big part of the Warrior Forum's appeal, Adam. I'd be happy to be your IM friend.

I think Martin Avis lives in your neck of the globe and has real luncheon get-togethers sometimes (as opposed to virtual gatherings on the web). You could look him up and see when the next one is happening.

And a bunch of warriors just had some kind of seminar in North Carolina within the past couple of months.

So I think your idea is solid. Seems like people really benefit from it, and it's not easy to explain what we IMers do to those who don't IM.

Doesn't Twitter have a local search? Wonder if you could use that to get a group together?

    Yep I do.

I usually work alone, but will sometimes have a group at my place to brainstorm and lay down a business action plan, record some stuff and drink too much coffee.

    Hey Adam,

I think that it's a great idea- mainly because it's just nice to talk to someone who 'gets' what you do every now and then :-)

It is also great to run ideas past people and get the 'heads up if something is going to work or not before you invest to heavily in it.

I am lucky in that my boyfriend is into internet marketing too- so we can usually chat it over with each other- but sometimes it would be great to get an opinion outside of that :p

    Thank you people.

By the way, I'm not really into meet ups etc unless we all become real good pals! Until then it's email and Skype lol.

Anyway, about me. I've been Internet Marketing for about 8 years now (never really counted hehe) and I'm pretty competent at desigining, making products, branding them and promoting them. I have a few successful products under my name and also have a few lists.

I'd love to get to know other marketers who are fairly experienced (not necessarily gurus!).

What are you guys and gals into in the world of internet marketing?

I've been a hermit for a very long time. I actually went to my very first seminar this year. I really need to get out and meet more people.

But, I'm a bit opposite of you Adam. I rather go out and meet people. I really don't like the whole chatting thing.

As you can see, I've been a member here for like six or seven years and only have less than 2000 posts.

But, I like hanging out with people. If I can find some IM people to hang out with that are close to my house that would be cool.

      Talk soon,

Also, I am a full-time Internet marketer. I've been marketing seriously online since 2007. However, I started looking at building a business online in 2002.
Actually tried to build a business in 2004.

And then finally went full-time in 2008.

        Talk soon,

I've been experimenting with IM since 2006. Went full time with my SEO writing biz about a year ago. I enjoy playing with Wordpress and a bit of HTML coding.

As a writer, I work mostly alone, too, and most of the time that's just fine with me. But there are times when I wish I had someone to bounce product ideas off of, or brainstorm...so I do have some kind of "social" gene, I guess.

I'd be happy to give opinions or kick ideas around...just let me know if I can be of any help. I actually enjoy helping with other people's project dilemma's...it's a nice break from my own sometimes.

Okay...just took action, added you to my WF contact list and sent a few friend requests to people on this thread...not really sure what that does, but it seems to be in the spirit of your OP! Thanks for the inspiration! Might be sending you a brainstorming question in the next few days. Feel free to do the same.

            Hey Adam,

My belief system is in getting to know people, where you talk, come friends, build trust, loyalty, word of mouth referrals, more traffic, return traffic, and this is the house that Terra built! LOL!

I've only been in IM for less than a year, technical stuff doesn't like me!

I absolutely love writing though, and talking, and having fun!

I actually have some friends who are very helpful to me with the techie stuff, we chat, PM, and skype also!

So if you so wish to chat about any aspects of IM, I'm open!

    Hey Adam,

That is why I have been doing social networking, so that I meet other people that do what I do and so that I can learn from them and work with them.

I'd be down to talk with you anytime about anything. We can learn from each other, work with each other, get ideas from each other, anything. That's what I'm looking to do.

Let me know what's up man and I hope to network and talk with you soon.

Ps. I'm going to send you a friend request and you can find me on Facebook under the name "Anthony Luth". I'm the one from Wolcott, CT.

None of my friends who I physically meet are Internet marketers. They marvel at even the most rudimentary things related to internet. I can't get too smug about it, though, having been the class idiot more than once in my time (like when I studied 3D animation).

There was a time when anyone who could read and write was looked upon as some kind of genius, when most people couldn't read and write. That is sort of where we're at with computers and Internet, where some people are basically computer and internet illiterate, never mind Internet marketing savvy. It's an opportunity for those of us who've acquired this IM knowledge, before it becomes widespread and commonplace.

So, to put simply. I'll give a big YES to forming relationships with people.
And not just trying to take value from them, but give them value.
I think that's a really good point. For a while I wondered if this IM stuff will become obsolete. Then I saw a great comment Gary Halbert made a few years ago. He pointed out that for people who understand the principles of marketing, the fundamentals always stay the same - what do people want, how do they want to learn it's available to buy. The communication technology of the day changes. But the messages to communicate are based on human nature, psychology and service. What we learn about those things doesn't get obsolete.

I hate this topic. As I've found that at least 90% of the people whom I have ever connected with just want to make money from me while the other 9% are too engrossed on doing their own thing. While %1 are newcomers wanting to know how to get started.

What do you ya do to make good friends would be a good starting point.

Sounds like my IM twitter page, LOL. A bunch of people throwing product/service pitches at each other (some even somehow made their way into my news feed, making it look like I'm doing it 24/7 as well). Do I really want to experience that live vs virtually?

I'll qualify that by saying there are plenty of individuals who I've never met in person, on this and other IM forums that I consider to be friends, but that's via real conversations, not pitch-slinging.

You have a point there, I think the best way to make IM friends is not to always talk business but to chill together, laugh and mess around. Once you actually get on with each other and enjoy each others company then the friendship will last and you'll be able to help each other with IM willingly.

          Thanks,

Well my boyfriend is the one who got me hooked on IM (he has been into it for about 6-7 years). I actually didn't get it at all lol - i thought it was some kind of scam at first (sounded too good to be true).

I realised that it was important to him so I started learning about it- then got hooked on it and started working full time. I mainly do offline consulting - it just seemed to pay much better and it was easy to build recurring income into the picture - that was important to me (ex-financial advisor lol). Now I am thinking that I would like to move more into traditional IM - more flexibility and better lifestyle. If we want to go away etc now we can but we have to make sure our clients are looked after etc. There is also a lot of day to day handholding etc with offline clients.

I do love what I do though- which is more than I can say for before when I was financial planning...

    Hi Adam

As my profile shows I'm based in Hawaii, a place that seems to be devoid of Internet Marketers - at least I've never met any personally (although I have seen some other Warriors who are also from Hawaii, just have never met them).

Right now I'm spending some time in Montreal, and in the 2 weeks I've been here I've met about a dozen Internet Marketers and have become fast friends with most of them. I think it's wonderful, being able to chat about this business to other people who face similar challenges that you do.

The Warrior Forum is of course the best way to meet other IMers worldwide, and I would love to connect with more of them - both online and in person. While I also don't quite understand the Friend request function on WF I'd be happy to exchange friend requests with anyone who wants to.

I am always looking for new friends that understand what I spend all my time doing. It can be frustrating when everyone around you does not understand all that stuff you do online.

Looking for more people is always a good idea. Having friends that understand what you are doing can help to motivate you to move forward and take some action rather than sitting on your bum not doing anything.

At the WF networking event in Raleigh I have met quite a few great warriors...
With some of them I am still in contact although not as often as I would like to. Maybe it is also my fault: I am kind of lonely, hermit type.
However, I often feel the need to exchange some ideas, to talk and brainstorm. But being as I am... I never posted about this need as Adam did in the OP.

Although I used to be a journalist in my "previous life", most of the time it's not easy to write in my fourth language (sorry, English is not my second one). I can write but it's slow and time consuming.
But I know a lot of technical stuff: XHTML, CSS; understand some PHP; can tweak WP in zillion ways - and learning how to use my iPhone

    This is a good thread!

What languages do you speak? English is, strictly speaking, my second language. Oddly enough, I long ago lost fluency in the first language I spoke in my life, but the somewhat mannered way that I speak and write English somehow differs from people who just started with English in their lives.

Bill, I am with you on the Friend request thing. I have a few "friends" in my list but haven't quite figured out what to do about it!

I may not be as experienced as some here, but I am very enthusiastic! I do like making connections with people, and would love to have some real online "friends." Hey Adam,

You're getting in on this a little late many of us having been doing this for years.

I've met at least 100 warriors offline because of this exact reason.

I have IM friends in many countries now that if I'm in their area we get together for a coffee/beer and a chat.

I just met up with a fellow warrior last week and have been meeting Martin Avis and others offline for years in many ways.

It's DEFINITELY something you should do.

When I lived in Southampton I knew a bunch of IMers in my area and used to run mastermind groups and workshops to get people together - the same when I was in Singapore last year.

There are a lot of people in IM who get so used to sitting at their PC that they forget that there are a lot of us that get together and chat.

    Yes I do!

I believe in surrounding myself with likeminded individuals with the same interests and motivation, it helps massively for business and also for my own drive and motivation!

Drop me a PM or line anytime, Im always up for working closely as friends and in business with other likeminded UKers!

IM friends are awesome. It's good having someone you can talk to about business, run ideas by and bitch about something that they understand (whereas if I told one of my offline friends my PPC campaign isn't getting a good enough CTR they'd be like... WTF ).

Talk to around 5-10 people a day regularly on the subject of IM, some JV partners, some previous customers, other just people I've met and networked with online (one of the benefits of running a blog). Always happy to 'meet' more, my Skype username is public

I've found that offline meetups are better than online ones, so trying to get involved with that more as well. Only met 50-75 people related to IM offline so far, less than 10% of that would be from here I'm guessing.

Hey if you are in Toronto and in IM, PM me, I have met some IM friends over the years here. It just comes by having an interest and meeting one person here, one peron where and ads up.

I have spent the last few days hanging out with IM friends (including a warrior).

Hi Andy, I've been aware of this all the time, I just preferred working alone. I've got a few cool Warrior friends already but I wouldn't mind getting to know a few more.

True, it's either that or they perfer working alone.

    Thanks,

The IM industry is one that can burn you out very quickly. Having friends who understand and see the nature of IM business from a 360degree view can be a great motivator to help keep you plugging away.

Without friends in this industry it can be a very lonely place. No one understands IM better than fellow IMers.

I agree with Shana. Adam, if you are talking about out of city/state/country IM friends, I believe online communication works best and yes, you don't necessarily have to work together. It's always good to have friends in IM for the reasons you mentioned as long as they respect each other's work. There's no one above all!

I have IM friends in several parts of the world (UK, Middle East, US, Asia) and yes we do help each sometimes either through tests/ideas/etc. Not the "I befriend you coz you are a Guru" kind. Just simply straight talk kinda like football buddies - we talk football but don't necessarily support the same team.

Won't mind hitting up with another. Nope, I don't carry a stick.

I would really love to meet some people here in Princeton NJ or in NJ.

I have no one who understands what I am trying to do and to get someone to talk to will be great.

Plus in this forum if there is stay at home mum with kids making money online and would help me brainstorm I will really appreciate. I would just love to have someone say way to go or and did you think someone would pay for that!!! And for me to offer help too.
All the best to you all,
    Grace

No with IM friends you still make your own living but just hang around with each other etc. That's how I look at it.
