New to IM, Need help.

Hey,

I just decided to step into IM because I'd like to have some more money to spend, actually I am a college student and I don't work. The truth is, I can't find time to work. If I find a part time job, my grades at school will surely suffer . Well, if I work from home, I believe I would be able to adjust my time table.

Ok, I have read a lot about IM since the last two weeks. I've read about adult affiliates, CPA, PPC. The problem is, I don't know how to start up .

I was thinking of starting up by creating a website, I know a little photoshop+html+php+css tho. But I couldn't decide if I should invest in hosting+ domain names or just get a free blog at blogger's. I don't know anything about SEO, I don't know how to drive traffic, how to put appropriate META tags and so on. So, any ideas?

Second, I cannot decide in which field I should invest my time, I mean, I am noob  .

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Start at Hubpages or Squidoo. Write a few articles and see what you can do.

Everyone and their dog wants to make money, and for some reason they think that just because they have a computer they can.

This is a business and requires time and effort. The money just doesn't pour in because you throw up a site.

You have to approach it like any other business, the main difference with it being online is that you can work from anywhere.. but you still work.

There's shortcuts and you can see results quicker than an offline business but a good place to start would be purchasing War Room access.. worth the investment and will give you some solid ideas on how to start an online venture.

Either way you're going to have to work at it, just like anything else.

The good thing is, you're in the right place to find all of the helpful information you need. Their are so many people who enter IM without a purpose and never even visit this forum.

The best advice I can give, you need a good foundation before you can build anything in life. Your keyword research is your foundation, don't skimp on it, make sure you're 100% confident in it or else you'll probably wind up being disappointed.

    ...very marketable skillz, Jawshh

    Both here, and beyond.

Think about the knowledge you have. Think about how other folk could benefit from it, e.g.

    * you could offer yourself as a solution provider..or

    * you could write/screen-capture your solutions and become a teacher...or

    * you could be a consultant to people who need a solution, but don't know who to trust, or where to start...

    ...etc..

Make the most of the skills you have!

    Kind regards,
    Steve

You can make money with free blog's and you can make money purchasing your domain and hosting. You could use your knowledge of photoshop etc., or you could venture into an area you know nothing about. You could make money in a niche that you are familiar with, or you could research one that you know nothing about. It really doesn't matter. To be honest, you probably won't do all that well with your first effort anyways. No matter which direction you take you will learn TONS though.

There is no magic to this. Just choose a course of action, find your niche and get to work. Right know you don't have any idea of the questions that you will have because you haven't started yet.

This business is all about taking action, and then trial and error. The faster you get started the faster you will make money. The more time you spend deciding what you are going to do, the greater your chance of failure is.

Try things one by one, and see what's best for you..but don't just jump from one thing to another..
learn one thing well, and then move on, and after some time when you learn alot of IM skills, you'll be able to combine them in order to make more money..

Like others already said, if you decide to do it, this is a serious business, and it does require to invest your time and some money..be patience and you'll succeed

      • I'm new to IM as well, the best advice I can give you is "Don't sit and ponder - Just do!". I read up for about 2 weeks on different things, decided what I was going to try and got on with it. I've not made my first sale yet and my website is still making it's way up the google rankings but for me the most important part is that I'm taking action.

I may not have made money yet and I may fail to make any with what I'm trying but the point is that I am trying. Theres such a thing as overanalyzing something, just pick a method, do your research, then jump in with both feet

Best thing I can tell you is to have a plan and to stay focused. There are a lot of shiny objects that your going to start seeing. Pick a method (article marketing, list building, ppc, etc) and give it all you have before moving on to another method.

As said above, this takes time and doesn't happen overnight. But if you can keep yourself from being distracted and follow your plan, you can be quite successful.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I am starting to get an idea about IM now. Sounds good.

      Hey michelle,

I have been looking at your thread since yesterday morning. I have created a squidoo lens. I have create the other mini blogs. I think i'll move to a website after I get some money. Besides, I already have hosting, I used to host some blogs and forums with it. But I guess it could prove useful for IM

Can someone suggest a domain name registrar? I usually use Monikers but I thought that I could use a better registrar(if any) so that I can sell domains after getting good traffic.

    Hi Jawshh

I use Godaddy for my domain registrations, and if you search online you can sometimes find some godaddy discount coupons.

Namecheap is another one, and I suppose there are lots more out there that I've never heard of! :-)

You are still going to have to allocate time. Be it two hours a day (recommended) or one hour a week (will take you many months to get there) you must set up a time budget and stick to it.

There are some nifty ideas (not just mine) on this thread:

    Thanks michelle.

Peter, your book is amazing. However... In the keyword section, you say that we must choose keywords with low competition. :s What do you mean? Must we not choose keywords which have a high search volume? There are many threads in this forum saying that, but I don't understand. Could you explain please?

The best is if you could find keywords which have high search volume, low competition in organic listings and high number of PPC advertisers (that shows that there is money to be made with this keyword). Organic listings mean that search engines show them "naturally" in the search results.

I think what Peter meant is that you have to find keywords for which you would be able to rank in SERPS or for PPC have lower cost per click, but still have decent amount of searches.

For example "student loans" has 368, 000 exact searches per month but it would be very hard to rank for that keyword and cpc is $11.74 so you'd have a huge budget to do PPC. Instead you can target so called long-tail keywords like "best private student loans" which has a lot less and weaker competition, but still is searched 1000times/month (exact match)

Best domain registrant in my opinion is Namecheap. It's one of the cheapest for me... I used to work with Godaddy.

Well man... welcome to IM... and one thing I can say. Even if everything don't seem like it's not going to reach nowhere.. never give up. I actually thought that Internet Marketing was a waste a time.

For a long time I tried making money with Internet Marketing.. and never did it. Traffic seems to be the biggest problem (quality traffic mostly). But when I decided to go for long-term thinking.. I made $10k in a month... so that was when I thought I should focus on only doing IM.

All methods work as long as you have the patience to follow through. Sometimes you will try something and find that it is not your style. You have to find what you love and do that.

Though it may not be for everyone, SiteBuild it is the tool that helped me with all the tools and education I needed to build a business online. I guess I was worse than you... I never knew anything before my journey.

  • As you can see there's lots of advice here. You've got to strike that balance of investing time (because it can take time) and not having too much time. With that in mind I'd say you need to be very clear on what time you are willing to spend and what exactly you are going to achieve with each time you spend on your venture.

You don't neccessarily need to be at a computer to be making progress. Spending some time planning your time will help as it will stop you sitting down at your PC or laptop and wasting time working out what your going to do. If you plan ahead you can hit the ground running, complete your action and get on with the rest of your day.

Another piece of advice would be to avoid confusing busy with achieving. Because as someone pointed out, you'll see lots of lovely shiny things from other marketers. Lots of warriors lose so much time going online to make money and do little else but jump from one site to another. Ask yourself "is what I'm doing right now getting my product accessible to an audience and working to drive traffic". If not, then drop it. Making money will help keep your enthusiasm high.

My third piece of advice don't be too obsessed with perfect. Get it done and get it online. Too many people spin their wheels working on content offline. Its all aim and no fire. If its online but not perfect it may not sell. If its not online if definately won't sell. Go for might not over definately won't every time. You can always go back and keep tweaking.

    Wishing you every success.
