URL Cramming; a waste of time?

When reading information on domain names and how to compose them, I keep reading that it is necessary to get as many keywords crammed into them as possible. Yet the best known URLs are Yahoo.com, Google.com, Amazon.com, Alexa.com, Twitter.com, MySpace.com and what about Dogpile.com? Even that is surely better than:

Homebizops, Homebiz, Onlinethis, Onlinethat, Bizonline. Perhaps that's what Digpile's designers had in mind. What do you think?

The shorter and catchier your domain name, the easier and more brandable it is.
Sure, there is a chance that a keyword filled domain will rank better, but a good optimized website on a short, catchy, brandable domain can rank just as good if you put some effort into it.

  • You only need one good keyword in your URL.

If you are small you chances of Branding are small. It takes huge sums of money to brand.

If you are going to brand your business like Yahoo...then it takes money and or time to imprint your name into the minds of many, many people.

On the other hand, if you wanted to start making money from a niche, or topic like vitamins that you are an affiliate for then you could get traffic a lot faster if you optimize your site to get ranked on the search engines.

The more places you have your keyword included in your site the better chances you have for a higher ranking.

"Best Vitamins" in your url bestvitamins, gives you "points" for ranking.

But if you were starting your own vitamin company then maybe branding would be better to work on. It would still give you a boost to have "vitamins" in your url.

  • the examples you give are brands, yet the advice you site is for seo, they aren't compatible

go short and memorable for branding, go keywords for seo, but never "cramming"
