I have a dual xeon 3.0. 2GB server that is crashing repeadedly. I know there is a lot of spamming activity going on. Looking at the exim mail statistics, I wonder if anybody can tell me whether this is enough to crash my server?

  • It depends on many factors, but if it's a dedicated mail server, that's not a lot of activity for almost an hour and a half.

Hour and a half? Try four days.

That ain't much. Back in my blackhat days I used to send out 100k emails a day on a 80$/month dedi that had less than half the specs yours has and i never had an issue. You got other things to look into.

This is not a dedicated mail server but hosts a few hundred domains. I am thinking of moving to a more powerdul server but am not sure whether the problem can be sorted out.

  • I wouldn't worry about it if it's not slowing your sites down. It doesn't seem particularly heavy to me. Some days it seems like 30,000 messages hit my inbox alone. With e-mail users plus website apps using your mail server, it's probably just a period of heavy activity. If it continues or gets worse, contact your doctor.

Thanks, my server collapsed yesterday and had to been taken down and examined in the data center. It seems that it had a problem with a faulty cooling fan that was replaced. I hope this is the end of my problems as it had been playing up many times since August this year. At least I know that the spam mail is unlikely to be the cause of the problem.
