How to Monetize Pro Life Site?

I have a web site that serves as a referral site for pregnancy centers across the US. I am not taking money from the preg. ctrs and need to make money to keep the site going. I was thinking about putting together two e-books (for those that have already had an abortion and those that are considering it) and placing an ad on the left margin of the site for those interested. I just am not sure that this is the best way to monetize the site. I do not want to use Ad Sense b/c the ads would probably not be appropriate for the site.

Any thoughts on how to monetize such a site?

I suggest that you think in terms of the demographic you attract. For example, I suspect you attract a number of devout Christians. You may want to advertise (perhaps via affiliate arrangements) suitable products: Christian jewelry, books, etc.

I will have women looking for abortion options and/or Christians coming to the site.

I'm not trying to be critical, but is this really traffic you want to try to monetise? I mean, how much can it cost to keep the site going?

If you want to see what kind of ads will show on the page, try the AdSense preview feature. Google publishes a version for IE:

And there is an independently-develped alternate for FF:

      Thanks for the tip.

No, I do not want to monetize it. I am doing this b/c I believe in it but need money to keep it going. I spend about 20-30 hours a week on the site building backlinks, writing articles (on site), etc.. . I am not sold on the idea of monetizing it but wanted to get some ideas from other Warriors, thanks again.

I think you might be better off considering the site a charity service that you provide without expecting a profit. Meanwhile, use your IM skills to sell something uncontroversial to lots of people who have plenty of money and are eager to buy it. Build an IM empire that will require a massive staff. Then you'll not only be able to fund the charity site, you'll be able to offer work at home jobs to the new mothers.

If I were you, I would not make any blatant efforts to monetize this type of site. If you have proof that you're helping people, then there are plenty of organizations out there that will donate to your cause.

If the issue is the time, rather than the cost of hosting, you may want to look for a different solution: Get help. Volunteers. There are a ton of people who would very likely be willing and able to work with you.

Just make sure they share the same philosophy you have on how things are presented and discussed...

I have been in touch with quite a few and there are still some possibilities out there. I made a decision not to place undue financial burden upon the Pregnancy Centers. Thanks for the feedback. I think it is obvious that monetizing the site is NOT the way to go.

Can you get a local busineman to sponsor your site and pay for your time?

I have gone to churches and presented them with a professionally made DVD, addressing the key points, etc... I am yet to go to local businesses as they are already donating to local Pregnancy Centers.

I honestly can't see the harm in monetization. Marketing can be a service. For example, if there is a book that you found inspirational and you provide a link to that, what's the problem with taking money for your referral? You have provided a service for the author, the vendor and the new reader. If you don't need the money, you can always donate it.

For many people, "doing good" is a profession. Don't we want to encourage more people to consider this option?

You could offer 'sponsorships' of the site (not 'paid' advertising). Select who you want to target, and then offer them discrete graphic presence on the site ... OR, you could have a 'Visit and thank our sponsors' page and list everyone there. Platinum, Gold, Silver, etc.

It sounds like you'd be most comfortable - and find it easier to pitch - if you just look to cover your costs. As for your time, consider paying a local student to help out and include that in your annual budget. Or offer someone a prime sponsorship spot in exchange for specific amount of hours/week.

Another alternative you could look at is a donation type button. One you could check out is ChipIn. You can monthly put in the amount you need to cover your hosting and time costs etc and then people can donate what they feel like to help your costs. If you want to see a sample of what I am talking about check out Lend4Health and you will see Tori has a chip in button in the navigation bar where people can donate to help her cover Paypal fees etc for running the site.

Thanks for the suggestion. I already did this but it did not work out so well.

I wish I could give thanks twice ... awesome advice, thanks.
