I see so many people get obsessed with building links, PPC, writing articles and submitting them, social bookmarketing, and countless other methods to get traffic...

... But sadly, many people fail in the most basic concept, and that is creating a site worth viewing. When you create a site worth viewing, you get:
1. Repeat Visitors
2. Word of Mouth
3. Increased activity
4. Registrations
5. Sales!

It's not easy making a sticky site, but once you get it the first time, you'll never have to market again (or if you do it will be "gravy")

I agree with this. There are so many discussions about traffic building techniques and not enough about how to create a "sticky" site. lets get some of these threads going then.

Really good point. Unique Content always wins. Information people can use. Interesting stuff, original ideas. It gets attention and it's real leverage to get people on your list or to get them to click through to your CPA offers. And many other things.

If you create unique content you have the edge, because so few people are able or willing to create it.

The problem is that you are correct for a particular 'business model'.

What I mean is that alot of MMO business models like Adsense are all about the vistor coming from SERPS. Once they click away they usually never come back.

So, in those cases link building is the key.

In a business model where long term relationships are key to success you are 100% correct.

Each business model (and it's promotional model) has it's merits and it's own optimal promotional method.

        Horses for courses.

Ok, I hear you, so what would be a good example of a business model that you don't care about building traffic over time?

I think they are speaking of new vs reoccurring traffic. If your business model is mini-sites, you would be more interested in getting a lot of traffic from SERPS, from people who will most likely visit your site ONCE - and click your links. However reoccurring traffic is where the same people would keep visiting your site. These tend to me more social in nature - forums, social networking, or news. There is only so many times one person will visit a site " Teeth Whiting in 10 Minutes" whereas that same person might visit a car forum 1000's of times over their online span.

So what would be an example of a "mini-site" where you don't care about repeat traffic or people telling their friends about it or growing traffic over time?
