Advice needed on increasing qualified traffic to my website

Hi,

I have a niche website which sells an unusual gift item which is a physical product that is shipped to customers.

Looking over my sales statistics since January 2009 I have about a 3% conversion rate for the product.

Most people seem to be coming to the site from searches directly related to the product, so they could be classified as qualified buyers.

I'm looking for advice on whether this is a reasonable conversion rate for this type of product, or should I be expecting higher conversions?

I would also like to increase the number of qualified visitors to my site. At the moment the site relies on search engine traffic and I'm on the 1st page of Google for a number of rearch terms related to the product.

I would appreciate some advice on how I could increase the number of visitors to the site.

You should visit your top competitors and compare their websites with yours. What do they have and you don't. Do they offer some freebies or rewards. How do they capture the audience/visitors and how do they make them to come back.

The average conversion I hear tossed around on the web is 2%. If this applies to physical delivered goods, as well as digital, then I'd say your 3% conversion is excellent.

Ranking well for keyword phrases is of course, excellent - depending on the phrase. If the keyword phrase is one where the intent would be to buy, not just gain information, then even better.

For example, say you have a site where you want to sell cookbooks; but you're ranking for keyword phrases about specific recipes. Chances are, folks looking for recipes are looking for free recipes - not to buy them.

So apply this same concept in your niche with your ranking keywords, are these keywords with a buying intent? If so, then 3% conversion is good - you are getting sales!

To find more targeted customers, use social media... ask site visitors to follow you on Twitter to receive a special coupon code of the day that only your followers will receive, etc... techniques like that make folks feel part of something special, and who doesn't like a good coupon. Use selective targeting to find/follow folks on Twitter related to your niche.

      tknoppe,

I'm happy to hear that my 3% conversion rate is above average.

I actually had 4 months out of the last 11 where I had 4-4.8% conversions. Although the conversions seem good, the number of visitors to the site are low at only 220 or so per month, so the number of sales are also quite low.

I was thinking if I can increase my qualified visitors, then I should be able to increase sales. I also have a customer newsletter and send customers a special coupon code giving a 20% discount off the product in the run up to Christmas (as the item is often bought as a Christmas gift), but only had one sale as a result of this.

Thanks for the advice about Twitter. I'll look into this further.

3% is VERY GOOD!!!, I would take it.

Basically when you are doing any off site marketing, think who will read this, weather it is articles, video, PR sites etc....use keywords to focus who will target that content you have created to market.

    Cheers,
    Mukul

PS - I will trade my 1% for your 3%

I think your 3% conv.rate is great.. make sure to maintain that percent..

If you relay only on organic traffic, maybe you should considere some other traffic generation methods, to drive even more targeted traffic..
Try to participate in your niche targeted forums, and do some article marketing to increase targeted traffic..
There are many methods that you can use, and never relay only on one, even if it's profitable at some point in time..

    Hope this helps

Increasing traffic is the easiest part actually.

    You can:

    1. Submit articles
    2. forum posting
    3. ppc
    4. Banner advertising
    5. Blogging + blog comments + blog advertising
    6. Youtube
    7, Podcasting

The list goes on and on...
