Is this really Google hiring people to work from home

I was on foxnews.com today and saw a story about Google hiring people to work from home, to post links on their site. I assumed that it was an ad, but there was a video and Google logos and a graphic of a check from Google. Evidently you have to pay Google $1.95 for your package to get started, to weed out the serious people. I don't know whether to believe this or not, but it looks like it is coming from Google, not an IM marketer.

Heh. Good question. I always get extremely skeptical when someone tells me to pay them (even if it's $1.95) to work for them. Sounds a little too much like MLM, I guess.

No, this is a scam, with a nasty forced opt-in that many have found impossible to get out of, except by cancelling their credit cards and getting new ones.

Did you really think Google needs to "hire" people to post links?

    - Nightowl

P.S. This has been brought up here before. The sites are set up to look like "real" news sites, but they aren't.

It's a flog, promoting one of those Google home kits - you get the kit 'free' (just pay shipping) but you'll be billed something like $60-$70 a month to learn how to use Google Adwords. It is VERY hard to cancel the continuous billing (a friend of mine got caught & all she could do was cancel her credit card).

it is just a clever scam to lure in people, there are so many good opportunities to make money on the internet, try to stay away from anything promising online work opportunities.

If you were on FoxNews.com, you would have CLEARLY seen this in the Advertisement section as a LINK or a CONTEXTUAL AD that would bring you to a FAKE website.

To be clear, it's not even a real news channel.
Also, to be more clear, people don't PAY to get "HIRED" by any company (albeit, not being a recruiting firm that is actually doing you a service to get you hired).

It's an obvious scam called the Google Wealth Kit. This is the type of sites, links & products that need to be reported to the FTC.

Why are the CPA companies allowing this form of abuse. Surely they can see where the traffic is coming from etc.

They should be held responsible for allowing scam artists to operate.

Shana, I talked to one of the FTC senior litigators about this. Reading between the lines of what she was saying to me, it seemed that she was concerned by the fact that legitimate companies also run their offers through the affiliate networks - but it was a fairly short conversation (15-20 mins maybe), so I may be reading too much into what she said.

In fact, Commercial Litigation attorney Michael Webster recently wrote about the significance of the recent MoneyGram settlement with the FTC:
MoneyGram Scam and Gate Keeper Liability

Michael Webster concludes with this insight:
"This is a fairly significant fraud case in which the FTC is using the breach of MoneyGram's statutory duty under the Bank Secrecy Act to adopt a Know Your Own Agent as the grounds for an action under Section 5(a) of the FTC Act to go after MoneyGram which enabled this fraud, instead having to sue the 131 Canadian agents and try to collect from them. (And the FTC alleges that 65 of these agents have already been sued by the FTC for Telemarketing Fraud.)

Expect that the FTC will be looking at more enablers of fraud, and very closely at their compliance programs."

You know what? I just realized that I was reading a story on foxnews.com and switched to another page I had open, and it was this one I gave the link to. It looked like a news story, and I had just been on foxnews.com so I thought I was still there. It looked like a bit of a scam, but I thought I was on foxnews.com, so it just didn't make sense. Now I realize that I was not on fox news, this was a pop up.

They did have me going for a while though. I am surprised that the bit bad Google hasn't put them out of business though. They are using pretty similar logos.

Yes it is a big concern.

From a consumer point of view when you see ad copy that looks so credible it seems a shame to pass up. Whip out your cc and the nightmare begins.

The geo-targeting of these bogus ads makes it even more difficult for consumers to tell apart a genuine offer from a scam especially when they see that Emily Jones lives just down my road and she used to be a fatty - not anymore **** Maquie berry treats got rid of her fat gut and cleansed her colon in one week.

However lets not be mean to the consumer - as if one continuity program was not torture enough we will put them on 2 - double the bubble!

If you take a look at the WF and the newbie members who often dont have a clue about IM or what anchor text, url redirect, affiliate links etc are now scale this out to the masses who will know even less IM jargon and the continuity programs being placed on their credit cards etc etc.

    Such a shame.

Well the FTC should go after these companies to protect consumers.

I was reading a blog post about these "Google Pays Me $300 A Day!" type sites like this, and reading the comments section was just heartbreaking. So many of the people who'd signed up for the program thinking they could make some money were single mothers with kids, retirees living on a fixed income, people with medical conditions where they couldn't work, etc. Most of them weren't even looking to get rich, just to make enough money to make ends meet. Sadly the people who needed the money the most are probably also the least equipped to actually run a successful home business.

On the one hand, yes, the customer bears some responsibility too. But that doesn't change the fact that a lot of these tactics are designed to be intentionally misleading.

No, it's not Google Cash, but these scammers are using variations of that name.

Google Cash was created by Chris Carpenter back in '03 and a lot of the biggest names in the industry have learned from him. In fact, I've been promoting his offers and he just came out with a vid responding to this exact scam: http://launch.gcdetective.com/google-cash-scam.php

The first red flag is any site mentioning Google, Sears, Bill Gates, Donald Trump, and so on....you get my drift....just stay away.

Common sense would tell you that any of these people or entities would never stoop to advertising money making ideas like these....don't even consider it.

One way to help yourselves is to do some easy and intelligent research when you find stuff like this. A 60-second search for "Chicago TV news" will reveal there is NO Channel 8 in Chicago. Local stations: 2, 5, 7, 9 and 32.

This is NOT Google. Anyone with deep enough pockets can get an ad put together on t.v.. The only time google was paying people to work for them was a long time ago when they would pay you like $20 for each successful offline business you got to put in the local business search. This offer has long since been closed but, it was very profitable for the lucky few who were accepted.

    Does anyone remember that?

    Oh, and adsense.

I tried to report this to the FTC ... but their website reporting process SUCKS big time. Because I wasn't scammed myself, and didn't know their name and address, I cannot report it using their conviluted system.

There is a phone number, which I urge one of you to try, but as I am not from the USA I'm going to give it a miss.

Perhaps the American government (and other countries too) need to do an advertising campaign to help people to recognise the signs of a fraud, and FOX need to take responsibility for what they advertise on their site. If they advertised a site illegally selling firearms or explosive devices, or alcohol to children etc. etc. surely there is a line that they will cross where they become legally responsible for their content?

Jaxon, although you might find this forum a 'joke' to most of us its a
blessing and to people who are literally just starting out a site like this may be very tempting to sign up too. Unfortunately as long as IM exists sites like these will continue to plague us regardless of how much th FTC wants to crack down on them.

For example they may be shutting down torrent sites like Mininova and the Pirate Bay but I'll tell you now that 10 more will open their doors as soon as these sites go legit!

          Just my 2 cents.

how come this scammer hasnt been caught by the FBI yet?? I have seen his annoying pop ups about "Google Kits" for over a year now.

The FBI crack down on Russian hackers that know the best ways to protect themselves. I'm sure this guy doesn't know how to protect himself anyway near as good as hackers.

It's a real shame that people like this will one day stop Internet marketing for legitimate marketers.

I hate his pop ups, I hope he gets arrested soon and sent to prison for years for what he has done to struggling innocent people.

This outfit seems to have deep pockets, demonstrated by the massive amount of ad blocks, and promotion - they know what they're doing.

Lately a lot of clone sites like these have popped up as well, people trying to duplicate this scam.

Last I heard they were on the FTC's radar, but it will probably take some time B4 they build a case.

The one mentioned in this thread may be a clone, since it's the missing the long "disclaimer" at the bottom.

I googled for "chicago tv stations" and got this list:
Chicago Television Stations - Station Index
Chicago broadcast TV has channels 7 and 9 but no channel 8.

I googled for "fox network chicago" and got this Wikipedia article:
WFLD - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Chicago, the Fox affiliate broadcasts over the air on channel 31.
    Their website is myfoxchicago.com.

The "home" link for the page you gave links to a sales page for the "income opportunity." Trimming everything after ".com" from the URL gives only a blank page.

Network Solutions whois (WHOIS Search for Domain Registration Information | Network Solutions) shows that "news8chicago.com" is owned by someone using anonymity behind DomainsByProxy of Hillsboro, Oregon. Why would an official Fox station in Chicago use an anonymity service in Oregon to own their web site?

The actual myfoxchicago.com site is owned by
    Intellectual Property Department (FTS Inc.)
    Fox Television Stations, Inc.
    1999 Bundy Drive
    Los Angeles CA 90025
    US
There are real email and telephone contacts for administrative and technical contacts, and the street address checks out as the real location: google for "fox television stations bundy" brought up this mention on a Hollywood tourism guide. Fox Television Center

In addition, Google is in the news almost every day with a feature story about their amazing on-campus perks and very rigorous hiring process, all intended to keep the best people working together face to face as many hours as possible. How about a google search for "google employee" to learn more about this, and also see the comments of some disgruntled ex-googlers... every one of which was hired to work onsite, without having to pay anyone for a work-from-home guide.

    The link you provided:
Scam, scam, scam, and I hope whoever is behind it is kept from every doing anything in business again. Preying on the hopes of eager, ignorant people, using their gullibility for false promises of a fast book, lying to misuse the well-earned good names of other businesses: this is the despicable work of someone of very low character.

Tim, I'm glad you didn't get caught up in this.
