Question about sales funnel best practices

Our subscription-based social bookmarking software is about to launch v 2.0, and we're trying to finalize how the sales funnel works. Essentially we have multiple levels of service available (sort of like silver, gold, etc), as well as an add-on to the service.

What we'd like to do is show an up-sell page for users that select a silver account, for instance, and then also be able to show an OTO for the add-on service. We could also potentially include a down-sell or something of the type in the future.

The main question is around when to send people to the payment page. One option is to send people top pay as soon as they've selected something at the first step, and then require them to go back to the payment page if they take the upgrade or the OTO. The other option is to just wait until the end and have them go to the payment page only once.

I imagine most buyers would prefer the latter, but I'm somewhat concerned about the possibility of people dropping out of the funnel before completing payment if we wait until the end.

What's your experience?

    Hi

i would personally have it so that once they have selected their package they are then taken to another page with the add ons before ending at the checkout.

Another option if you have the software is to have a pop up on the payment page offering them a surprise bonus to the package.

After payment though i would suggest taking them to your affiliates page as this is too good an opportunity to miss.

    kind regards

I am going to give you some results fro a few test I have ran...

Send them to payment first and then to the OTO. If you send them to the OTO first it may end up a wash or a loss in conversion.

The best possible solution would be use a one-click upsell.
