Have a new blog, so now I need traffic...

I'm still learning as a newbie and I've just got a new blog up and running for one of my business opportunities. I'd like to start driving traffic to it and getting some hits in the search engines as well. What are the best methods to go about doing this?

    Hi,

I believe you should start with Article Marketing.

Here's a little tip... One the main forum rooms, click on "views" or "replies", this will sort the forum threads of most views and replies. These are the most popular ones, and you are guaranteed to find a good strategy to implement. One such thread is this -

    Article Marketing 101

Also, theres another thread that you MUST read if you want to combine content on your own site and article marketing... and it is this one -

    Article-site-eza-first

This thread is worth A LOT of value...trust me on this. Do not ignore it. It's some of the best stuff I've read.

Those threads should give you a good idea to get started.

    Hope that helps mate

P.S. - The 2nd thread may take a few hours to read, so grab yourself a cuppa tea and get cosy

Blogs are special. There is a community of blog owners. There are also specific tools only available to blog owners.

Use both of those facts and you will grow much faster than non-blog sites. Do all of the following to establish yourself in the blog community you have just joined:

    1. Establish a blog roll. Link to the leading blogs. They will automatically see your links with the tools that only exist for blogs. Some will link back.

    2. Every day, click on one or more of those links and read the latest entry. Leave a comment with your URL in the proper place. Don't spam. Make the comment relevant to the post and don't promote anything about your blog. This will all take care of itself.

    3. Write a new blog entry at least daily.

    4. Many of those entries should give a nod and a link to other prominent blogs in your niche. You will be listed in their trackbacks when you do this. They will also feel a need to reciprocate after you have grown a bit.

    5. Participate in blog carnivals (google it).

    6. Register for technorati. Use tags. Add yourself to other blog directories.

    7. Ask other prominent bloggers in your community to write a guest blog for your blog. Ask other prominent bloggers who have guests post on their blog for the opportunity to write a guest post for their blog.

    8. Run contests for commenters. Engage in conversation. Ask your readers questions and have a liberal commenting policy.

    9. Do the same on other blogs in your community. Answer the questions those bloggers are asking.

    10. Engage in viral memes where you do something and then tag some other bloggers to do the same.

Building a blog takes a lot time and patients. With tons of good quality content the search engines will pick it up and then people will come.

I like to get the ball rolling with new posts is adding the link to digg. For what ever reason I have had the best luck indexing with google with posts on digg.

There are a lot of ways to get traffic to your blog. Firstly make sure you set up your automatic pinging feature. got to pingler.com and copy the list of sites in the box. Now go back to your admin of your blog, goto the writing section then scroll down to updates post the list of sites into the box and that will ping all those sites when you write a new post.

Pete, my blog is through Blogger. I'm not sure where to post those sites where it will ping it automatically. Do you know how to do that?

Blogger can (and do...) remove your blog if they see fit.

No explanation or reason, you go to add some content and find it's just gone!

This happened to me - and I still don't understand why...

You really would do better to invest in your own domain name and hosting so you are in control ofyour own sites.

Do you have your own blog or are you talking about a blogger blog?

There is a huge difference. Seth Godin says that his BIGGEST mistake in his entire business life was setting up a blog on typepad instead of creating his own blog.

For all of these years, he has been promoting typepad's site instead of his own site.

The same would be true with blogger or blogspot. Why promote Google? I think Google has plenty of traffic and probably doesn't need your help.

Get your own blog. The Wordpress platform is free and can be installed on your own site. Don't repeat Seth's biggest mistake in his entire business life.

That is an excellent point Kristi. I didn't think about that at all. I'm going to be switching over to Wordpress (I've found that Blogger is not very user friendly anyway to what I want to do). This is why I come on this forum, you guys are an excellent source of information

Try sites like digg.com, reddit.com and stumbleupon.com should give some traffic so every time you post, submit to them...

I also use onlywire.com to bookmark lots of sites at once...

I'm not sure if you have heard of problogger but if you go to that blog you will find lots of useful info on starting up a blog.

He has a 20 dollar course Titled 31 days to a better blog which had some crazy good info in it.

I would have paid more then that for some of the information that was shared.

Also, if you are going to use Wordpress which is very user friendly I would suggest using godaddy as your host.

If you buy hosting through them (start off at economy and upgrade as you need to) they have a special where you can get some domains for as low as 1.99. I am sure it depends on what you want to name your site as to how much it will cost. But, I would have appreciated that little bit of knowledge when I was switching over from blogger to wordpress.

There are tons of usefriendly themes that are free to start off with. Google Neoclassic theme. Its a free version on one of the more heavily suggested themes out there.

Good luck with your blog. What is your niche?

    Hi guys

i would post some lists on your blog as a post and this will get you lots of hits over and over again.

For example my blog is in the make money online niche and i get traffic to list style posts that i wrote some time ago even those that were created in february.

    Things like

    top 10 viral marketing tips
    top 20 social bookmarking sites
    top 100 twitter apps
7 powerful ways to improve your mailing list numbers
    and so on

another way is to look at the long tail keywords and make sure that at least 40% of your blog posts is a long tail keyword. This then helps your position in the search engine results in the long term.

Even if these long tail keywords only get you 50 hits a week after a year you should have at least 200 of them giving you a nice little stream of targeted traffic.

    kind regards

    sam
