Chip'n away at IM.. Progress update

I'm waiving a white flag, so don't shoot! I'll admit up front I'm relatively new to this IM arena, but it looks to be really promising and just need some feedback and direction.

I'm a pretty patient guy and pretty good with computers, so this sounded like something I should be able to do.

Most content I've read on IM states to pick something you enjoy to begin with, even if it's not a profitable niche you should get the basics down before trying to tackle bigger fish.

I picked something I enjoy, it deals with nutrition. The main keyword (as I understand the terminology in IM) is a phrase that consists of 3 words.

Created a free blogspot.com site and a new life was born.
- Wrote 1 article (412 words), published it on my new site
- Rewrote the article and published it to 3 article directories
:: (goarticles, ezine, articledashboard). Articles approved and released
- Using Pingomatic . com I pinged the blog article title, URL and RSS feed

Wasn't really getting any type of results so I continued to read more of the warrior forums and other sites linked in profiles / posts.

Mistakes I apparently made:

Mistake #1 Didn't do the appropriate keyword research. Well, I wouldn't really consider it a mistake because I'm trying to understand the basics and just get some form of search engine traffic heading my way.

Knowing what I know today, so far, if I use the Google Adwords Keyword Tool and type in my main keyword using Broad, Not Enough Data (NED) is returned in Local but Global has 880. Applying what I've learned since, if I change the Match Type to "Exact" I get Local: NED, Global: 140. "Phrase" Local: NED, Global: 260.

Ok, so I'm looking at something that has virtually no search volume.

In the 3 articles I published, I used my keyword as the anchor pointing back to the new blog article on the blogspot.com site. The Post title has the keyword, the heading has the keyword and the blogspot.com site has the keyword in the URL.

It took almost 2 months to get indexed, but it's indexed now.

Using a rank checker at www . seoserp . com I typed in my keyword and URL to the blog and it came back at #475 today (12/6/2009).

Mistake #2 I used the keywords as the article title, in addition to the anchor words and resources box links. As a result of this, I am now competing with these article sites to rank for the keyword. Oops!

So I'm at a loss now, as to why there isn't better results for Search Engine results.

Here are some things I could do which may help:

1) I could write and publish more articles to the blog, then rewrite them and publish to article directories using the keyword anchor, this seems to be a method used by many.

2) I could jump on forums and create profile backlinks.

3) I could bookmark the blog site. I understand Firefox has an excellent plugin for this called "Add me" ?

4) I could submit the URl to an RSS feed? Are there preferred RSS feeds for getting your site indexed / ranked?

But here's my question to those who may be knowledgeable in this arena:

Let's use the 1st blog I created. Since this keyword has less than 300 on a Global search volume, wouldn't writing 1 article and publishing it to 3 of the better known article directory sites be sufficient to drag this blog site to the top?

Or is it because not enough data exists for the search volumes on a Local scale, the Google search engines don't index many pages relative to the keyword(s) used?

I thought the latter might be the case, so I created a 2nd free blog site and pretty much mimic'd the same method (before I knew better). I wrote 2 articles this time, but only published 1 of them to article directory sites.

This 2nd blog seems to have been indexed in about 2 weeks. The search volumes (knowing what I know now) by "Exact" range from 330/820 to "Phrase" 390/1000. Not as dead as the first set of keywords, but not much better.

I tried a 3rd blog site, which had a little better results (880/720 to 1000/880). Initially I was using "Broad" and no idea what the "Exact" or "Phrase" counts were, which apparently make a world of difference. =) Did the whole article writing / publish system. On this 3rd blog, I found my article on page 1 and my blog was nowhere to be found. This is when I read more on the warrior forums and discovered my mistake of using the keyword in the article title.

I've since created a 4th blog, applying what I've learned off the warrior forums. The base keyword (3 words) has "Exact" of 1,000 Local / 1,900 Global. "Phrase" 4,400 / 8,100. This one looks a little more promising. I wrote 1 article on the blog, and simply did a "Digg" on it. Google has indexed it, but using the rank checker (noted at beginning of post) it isn't even listed on the top 1,000.

So I'm guessing I need to start writing and submitting articles to get the keyword indexed better to point to my blog?

I've read warrior posts where people talk about creating a new domain, writing 1 post and moving on to the next micro niche. I've also read where people have written 3 or 4 articles (no publishing to article directories) and moving to the next micro niche. Same by doing this with 5 or 6 articles.

I know I'm using free blogs vs buying domains, but the concepts should still apply for directing search engine traffic--I would think.

It appears Google has been going through a major shift (again lol) with mass bannings of accounts (Adword accounts from what I understand, and not Adsense) and I don't know if the rules of the game on this are changing and I'm just applying the wrong strategy or if it's a lack of publishing / writing content, etc. or if there is something else I'm missing that I should be doing.

Any comments or advice welcomed.
