Let Your Visitors Do Your Keyword Research

I think I posted about this before, but the headline sucked so bad nobody read it.

If you've got a WordPress Site/Blog or a Squidoo lens or... that's been up for a couple of weeks or months and you need more traffic, look at your analytics!

Squidoo has a display of the keywords that brought visitors to your site, and google analytics or ClickTales does the same. Even your AWStats in your Cpanel lists all the searches that brought people to your site.

PEOPLE SEARCH FOR THE DAMNDEST STUFF!

These 'off the wall' long tail search terms will never show up in any keyword program, but if the same one shows up a few times in your analytics, it's time to target that keyword!

They're also really useful to see HOW people are finding your site so you can either target those search terms more effectively, or in turn, re-evaluate your SEO efforts if the searches are not relevant to your goals.

    I use my server stats to uncover tons of keyword phrases that I never would have otherwise discovered.

      It only makes sense, match and mirror the keywords they are using.

      How about someone write some software to extract the keywords from your logs daily or weekly and create new pages optimized for those keywords, so this process would be automatic. Would be interesting to see the site grow and evolve over a couple of years. You could even be clever and mask the links to these landing pages with a Q/A page that says "todays questions"

      Anybody has the right to take this idea and implement it, as I wont ever do it as I am not into the software biz just send me a free copy and we are good.

    I discover a very unexpected keywords from Analytics, keywords that I didn't even thought of before when I do keyword research for the first time, lol.

      I was talking to a fellow who works for me, and he tells me that he can write this software. I can't say that I am exactly sure what it is all about myself as I am not up on these technical things. But if you think this would be useful software and there was enough call for it that I could recoup the wages he costs me to while he works on it, maybe I can get it done. If you folks are serious that you would want such software, I don't mind seeing if I can use him to produce it. I am guessing it will be something I could learn to use too. So any feedback, let me know. Should I pursue this with him or forget about it? My finances are not in a position where I can pay him to work on this and no one wants it.

      What would you think this would be worth in a finished package?

    I would like to see this developed, a couple of things would have to be worked out first. There are probably a dozen ways to implement this, if this is going to be resold as a wso or product then you would have to pick the method that is most compatible and easy to install. Can you ask your programmer some details on how he would do it and the degree of complexity of installing it ?

      It didn't look like there was a whole lot of interest in this after all so I dropped the idea. I was looking at upwards of $1,000 to get it done, and I would expect that to go much higher than that to get it working like folks wanted. I doubt that I would recoup my money so I moved on.

      Looks like Neil has something that is free to use anyway.

    yep, google analytics does not really gives you a good keywords, look for another keyword tool and compare it to analytics, and if the keywords does not work, compare it to the ones the user used, it takes time though but worthit

      I use StatCounter (the free version) and it's also provides the list of keywords that brought visitors to my site.

      Very useful information.

      Hear is a neat WP plugin I've used on many sites. It is a nice tool if you have WP sites that have a lot of users searching with your search function.

        This is a good strategy and if your niche is topical...that is the search terms are affected by recent news...you can pick up on trends in the news that people are searching for while those search terms have very little competition.

        There IS a free tool you can use to track all these search terms that even gives you suggestions at hittail.com
