I sort of look like you, but my face is really young looking about ten years behind that of someone my age. Just an average/above average looking guy, who alot of other guys look like and many women would and do find attractive. I recently lost about 50 pounds but am still a work in progress so don't really have any recent photos to post.

My disclaimer... I don't care if a guy sold cosmetics or not. It's just too much fun joking around about it. It's just that all the guys I've ever seen personally that sold beauty products were either openly gay, or must have liked to openly flame for the fun of it.

Sounds like it 'makes a difference' then, doesn't it?

You'd probably get a bit of a novelty aspect out of it with some people, which may make up for some of the other prospects that would be turned off by it.

Yeah, a gay person could MAYBE pull it off. Frankly, I don't know what women see in THEM.

Women tend to put some faith in Peer advice, woman to woman, and tend to be more comfortable being approached by, and touched by, women, in certain cases, such as this. There IS a reason why Avon encourages WOMEN.

Women also understand the products better and can speak from personal experience.

There is also the laugh factor. Of course, a lot of that is covered in Scott Ames link.

I think women do better cos (in the UK) they are always in each others houses for cups of tea during the day. Like if a new person moves into a suburban neighbourhood all the gossipping old ladies intorduce themselves and have a cup of tea. I am not sure how comfortable they will be having a man in or to the door while their husband is at work.

I didn't mean all women. Every time I go to see my mum during the day there are always a few old darlings sipping on a cup of tea and munching on some biscuits.

I have been there when avon lady comes round and she always pops in for cup of tea and gives the gossip for the street.

I admit, this is a very limited survey, but I doubt its isolated.

I know my mum doesn't feel comfortable having men in the house during the day and so do a lot of her friends. If a workman is coming round they go round each others houses so there is more than one of them. I am talking about the older generation here 50+

Hey Jon,

I think it's a great idea! In fact, you could provide a rather unique perspective, don't you think?

You've got the opportunity for a fantastic USP here I think - as long as you don't let your words or your body language communicate uncertainty about what you're doing.

Remember all those commercials about men selling vacuum cleaners? Of course, times have changed, and I'm sure all our warrior brothers do their share of the housework - but back in earlier times, guys did pretend to be experts in something that by and large, women did.

Seriously though, selling Avon doesn't mean you are an expert in using it yourself, but you can be or become an expert in your own experience of it (maybe your mother/sister/partner etc uses it - just get some personal stories together and it will work). Practice with your friends, and get comfortable with the role. Sounds like fun!

I say go for it!

EDIT: Hmmm, one man army has a point - women might be uncomfortable letting a male stranger into the house - but aren't a lot of these things sold these days through house parties, little gatherings that can be announced in the local weekly rag or the supermarket bulletin board?

I with you Kim. I'll be 51 in a few months. I have never thought of myself as the older gen. Sheesh. 50 is really young once you pass it.

Yes, Avon sells lots of mens and childrens items. It's not just all makeup.

  I know a few men who do well with Avon. If it's something that interests you, then give it a go.
  
  Here's an idea that one of the people I know does... He specializes in selling the gift items to men who have know idea what to buy for the wives, girlfriends, or both. He has built quite a following who send him many referrals.

I sell Avon. In my district there are a couple of men who make a full time living selling Avon. They are middle aged men and one is probably in his 60's. I think it's the product that sells itself in this case.

If you're selling it online, you could just pretend to be a woman. If you're selling door to door and don't make a very convincing drag queen, I don't know ... I would not let you in my house, but I would let an Avon "Lady" in my house.

I know several married guys who sell Avon fulltime quite successfully, the ladies seem to find it very amusing having a guy sell them underwear and perfume though it doesn't stop them from buying the merchandise.

You know I think it would be a good idea if you sold Avon. I used to sell it myself and I know that they have a lot of good quality products for men. My husband likes their cologne. You could be a good male representative for the company giving a male perspective on the products. Good luck.

Not only men's products, but Avon also has gifts such as jewelry, childrens items, toys...see,

It's not just about women's make-up any longer!

As a matter of fact, you could just carve out your niche in the men's market, selling not only the men's line, but to men in the arena of buying their special lady the jewelry, and bath products, and convince the men to play Santa and get kids toys for any children in their lives!

My granddaughters are delighted when they get the little avon items, bracelets, lipbalm jewery, etc, in their stockings!

I know many guys that make a killing in the cosmetic field. It is all about selling the need what the product will give to the customer. So listen what your customers want.
