How To Find Business Investors...

Hey Warriors,

I'm looking at a new business venture that's going to need some investors. However, I've never gone this route before and am a bit confused about where to find them.

I've just sent emails to all my contacts that have access to that world, so hopefully that will help. However, if that falls through, I'd like to have another way to get in touch with people who are interested in the type of company I'm trying to run.

So, how can I find investors for a business?

Depends on how much you need. However, if you have a good relationship with your local banker, consider putting a bug in their ear. With savings and cd rates so low, lots of people are looking for different investments.

Almost every major metro area has a venture capital club or networking group.

How much money are you looking to raise? It's very different to raise $10,000 to start a market stall than to raise several million in a first round of VC.

If you can give us a ball park area we can probably help you out better.

Well I'm actually in Caye Caulker, Belize right now.

I've found a fantastic hotel/bar/club that's for sale and want to take it over. It's making some good money at the moment, so income starts as soon as it's transferred, which is a high selling point.

I'm looking to raise about $500,000, most of which will go towards purchasing it. The rest would be for renovations and running it for the first year. If I could get more, that'd be great, but for what I'm planning on, that would be more than enough to get started.

I don't really know anybody, which is an issue. I've sent emails to everyone that might know somebody a couple hours ago, but won't hear back for another day or two from most of them.

Of course, this has nothing to do with IM, but I figured this was a good place to start asking as I'm already part of the community

A few month ago I was invited to a presentation about the off-shore banking possibilities in Belize

For that kind of a play, I'd look for attorneys that structure offshore insurance trusts for their high net worth clients.

Start asking around in attorney circles who does this kind of work in your area and network. Chances are, the attorney who does this kind of work would also be a potential investor candidate and defer fees in lieu of equity.

The upside to that kind of group is that the candidates are assuredly "qualified investors", which is key whenever soliciting a private placement memorandum.

I'm not an attorney, nor do I pretend to know jack crap about crap.

Just been through a few rounds of venture placement of my own.

Thanks for the awesome reply Michael. *Thanks!*

Do you have any tips (aside from joining "social networks" for angel investors) for someone who's not in the US and can't network there for a while?

I'm not exactly sure if this will happen, thanks to a short timeline and very few real contacts, but I'm making every possible effort to try and make it happen.

I *MIGHT* be able to do some sort of seller financing, but the real estate agent says that's highly unlikely. If that happened, we'd need a heck of a lot less to get started out, which might make finding investors easier.

      Thanks again for any help!

There are local legal agents down there to assist US attorneys with all the trade zone stuff.

I am pretty sure you can find some high net worth folks floating around Belize.

Another idea is to talk to some realtors that deal with high dollar vaca homes that are marketed to US businesspeople.
