Do You Love What You Do?

I was out for coffee with a friend of mine the other day and she said something to me..she said you're so lucky that you have found something that you love to do everyday as your job. And I thought to myself, I really am lucky. I LOVE internet marketing, I LOVE my 'job' if I could call it that.

My friend is an accountant - one of the smartest people I know, but she doesn't love her job..in fact she doesn't seem happy at all. It got me thinking...

Sometimes I see strange (in my opinion) posts on the WF..people will say things like HELP Ive been at internet marketing for 10 years and still can't catch a break. That type of thing just doesn't make sense to me. How could you be doing something for 10 years or even 1 year for that matter, and not see any success. To me that indicates that you haven't really been putting your full self into making things happen.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that if you haven't been able to make consistent money online yet, that you should give up. Stay focused on one project, and you will make it happen. But make sure you are passionate about that one project. Passion is what gets me going in the morning and makes me be excited to sit at my desk and start cranking out new grand action plans.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is...if you aren't finding success in internet marketing and you've been at it for a while, ask yourself do you really love what you are doing online? Or do you just love the idea of being able to have a flexible work schedule? You need to love the 'work' not just the benefits of the work. Figure out what it is that you love to do, write out your big goals, then reverse engineer those goals and figure out how to make them happen, by setting smaller goals...it doesn't matter whether your goal is to launch your first IM product or become the prime minister of Canada ( ).

Just find what you love, and I honestly believe that if you can do that and follow your passion, you will be successful.

One of the secrets of success is to love what your doing. I don't know anyone that will put a 100% effort into something they don't like.

What I love about IM is there is a lot of choice, so you can find the part of IM you love.

If you like making videos, or programming, or writing, you can focus your idea around what you love. You could write a great application, and pay people to set up the website. Or pay for an app to be developed and do the marketing yourself. So many ways to skin a cat! You can make it what you love.

I heard that spouted so many times; "do what you love". It's the worst career advice ever.

I've done many things I do not "love" or have a passion for. I do it for the money. Money enables me to do the things I love.

If I would do what I love, which is the visual arts, I would most likely starve.

For the majority of people, doing what one love is not the secret to success. Hard work, dedication and knowledge is the secret to success.

Amen. I derive joy from a job well done, despite whether I love it or not. In fact, being successful in something you do not love can be great testament to ones diligence, determination, and in some cases- responsibility.

Obviously its just of my opinion that doing what you love will lead you to a happy and successful life. That being said...I'd rather make less money and love what I'm doing each day and I know that if I loved what I did everyday I'd damn well find a way to profit off of it.

And of course I'm not saying you CAN"T make money doing things you don't love. My accountant friend makes a great annual income but its at the price of being unhappy for 9 hours of her day.

And yes talent certainly plays an important role, maybe you are naturally gifted with certain skills

As a side note - to me large amounts of money isn't everything, I mean its great, but I wouldn't ever sacrifice my happiness or dull my mind at a 9-5 job that I didn't really enjoy - if it paid more.

You have said it well, I do believe that people have different opinions as to what "success" means. It should not be automatically correlated with financial achievement.
Optimistic posts like yours will certainly help others evaluate what they really want in life.

I used to work for a large design firm, always loved designing but hated getting up in the morning & heading into the office.
Around 10yrs back I made a pact to myself, that I would stash a certain amount of $$$ away for the next 3yrs that would cover me for at least 2yrs of wages, from there it was time to pull the pin on the design firm, go out on my own and start living again.

I have definately not looked back, I play golf every morning, head to the gym, work from 12-6pm instead of working 11-12hr days at a dull boring firm............. yeah you could say I love what I do

It's not about the money, its about me being happy & those around me!

Indeed. I always told the kids that the best way to have a good life is make money doing what you would do for free. It seems to work. It works for me...I just spent 3 years doing something that was good for the soul but it raised my blood pressure to a dangerous level and yet the take away from it was to focus on what I love best. Writing and certain hobbies so I finally caught on that writing romance novels was not my forte (I'd have to believe in romance to do that) so I'm writing about stuff I do love. And making websites to highlight them.

Passion and love are not the only criteria for success. They may be the driving force, but without skills and knowledge they are nothing. Can the love lead people to seek the knowledge? Maybe, but too often that is not the case.

I also know people who are successful due to talent and skills alone, and have little love for what they do. I think we both agree that happiness can be derived from a combination of passion and success. But they can be mutually exclusive.

I love what I do when it is going well!

New things take time, and patience. And since my project is new it's stressful. But I love when it pays off!

Most people don't love what they do... and are too scared to go after their 'dream job'

I love my online business - don't just do it for the money, you'll only get average results at best!

Totally agree. For me the equation is simple ..... since IM is more of a hobby than anything else for me ..... when I profit ----- yooohooooo! and when I lose money or when my earnings drop ...... its still fun .... its just like losing a game on xbox .... i can start a new game .... as simple as that ...... and some days i win .... some days i lose ..... IM is pretty similar to xbox .... therefore I enjoy every bit of it .... money or no money - doesn't matter!

I love product creation. It is almost a sideline for me as my main job is freelance online project management. But I get quite a buzz out of creating the products and cross promotin them.

Great post, btl1! I'm fortunate in that I love my "work" too. IM allows me to combine writing, graphic design, and IM itself, which are three favorite things of mine, into a pursuit that pays me back. So I look forward to each day of work. (In fact, I sometimes secretly can't wait for the weekend to be over so I can get back to work )

As for Nom DeGuerre's view, I agree to a point. Doing what you love doesn't guarantee success. You do have to be practical as well and work hard, as you said. However, I think that no matter what you love to do, there's likely a way to make money doing it.

I always encourage my students to find a niche that they really enjoy because I know that may be the only thing that keeps them going through those first months when the money may be only trickling in, if at all. Once you're established, I think it's easier to go after the money niches regardless of your likes and dislikes.

Yes exactly, you need to be practical. You need to work hard. I guess for me I work hard because I'm passionate - and like you I believe tht for the majority of things , there is likely a way to make money doing it.

I love marketing and sales. Before Internet Marketing I was marketing to the likes of Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Hughes Space Systems. I rather enjoy working with the "little guy" now.

It does take hard work and effort to get into business for yourself both online and offline. It would be much harder to put in the effort needed on your own if you absolutely hated what you were doing. You might be able to get by with it in a 9-5 job because others are looking over your shoulder. But there is no one to make you work when you are on your own. Also there is a period of discouragement for anyone who is in business for themselves and loving what you do will help you persevere.
