Record Trackbacks Without a Blog

I have been using trackbacks in wordpress to keep an eye on where my links are coming from.

How can I record these trackbacks on pages that are not in wordpress. I know it can be done, but I am unsure of the exact process a trackback takes. Does it require a comments form to be on the page? Either way I should be able to setup some custom code for this, I just need a push in the right direction.

Thanks.

The trackback standard isn't used much anymore even though most bloggers still use that terminology.

Modern blogs use the pingback standard. Just google "pingback standard" and you'll find the specifications. You have to have an xmlrpc.php file to catch the pingbacks if you want to catch them from other sites. You need to be able to look for the link rel=pingback in the html of the page you want to ping and call it's xmlrpc file with the proper xml encoded information to send a pingback.

No comments form is required on the page. You just need the link rel=pingback specifying the name of the script that catches pingbank requests and the script itself.
