Do You Distinguish Between Your Free & Paid Offers

Hi Warriors

I'm referring to your email subject lines here for the broadcasts to your email lists.

When I send my emails I usually distinguish in the title whether it's free content. I find this helps to get more opens and clicks for these types of email.

I'll always include something in the title such as:

Free report...
New blog post...
New article...

That way my subscribers always know that something is free and they open my email.

But, when I send a promotional email I don't have any of these words that indicate that it's free and therefore my open rates are down.

Do you distinguish between your free content and paid offers?

Do you think it would be better not to distinguish and then maybe have fewer opens for my free offers compared to what I get now, but more opens for my paid offers?

How do you - or would you - deal with this situation?

Thanks,
James

P.S. Just passed the 1,000 post mark!

I like to mix it up, if it's free content that I want a lot of my list to see then yes I will tell them what it is in the subject line...

The best solution is to provide some sort of value in all of your emails - even when your pitching a product.

Then condition your list to know that you always are providing some value even if it is a short little tip...

the problem is it takes more time and effort and if you send emails everyday, it may be hard to find enough content to deliver daily

I'm pretty new to email marketing but I'm running 4 lists right now so Im getting to test a few different approaches. I've gotten the best results starting early in my auto responder sequence to have Free in the subject line. Do this for the first 1-3 items you are giving away free. Then for the next freebies don't have free in the subject line but have it early in the small amount of content and the link early in the email. Then when you actually promote something, they are trained to click thru. It's been working so far.
