Lost My Motivation - How Do You Stay Focused and Motivated at This Time of Year?

Hi guys,

Like many of you, I work from home. I also have 3 small children (4 years and under) and some days I really struggle to stay focused on my online pursuits. Even organising and managing the outsourcing of tedious tasks can be a mission.

We all have our days when our focus and motivation wanes, so I'd like to know what you all do to keep things going? Especially at this time of year when there's so many other things competing for your time and energy.

Stay-at-home and work-from-home parents, I'd especially love to know some of your tips.

Cheers,
Sissy

I lock the kids in the closet until just about an hour before my wife gets home. Got to have enough time to get them settled down and cleaned up a little.

Sorry, kids have given me hell today and I thought about it.

I would never do that but some days are so hard that you are best to just walk away and try it again later.

    Good Luck!

    Mm

Ha! We've all thought about doing something along those lines some days. Yes, walking away is sometimes all you can do, as hard as it can be when things are on a bit of a roll!
Having a helpful and supportive partner helps tremendously, I couldn't do any of my writing and online business without my husband, that's for sure.

      Cheers,
      Sissy

Find out more about what Paul Myers calls, want power and not will power.

It will change how you live your life, I know it changed mine even though I didn't know what to call it. He just put words to it for me.

    Hi Sissy,

Having 3 kids ages 4 and under is tough and sometimes draining. It only gets easier, though.

One thing that really helps me is to pick one task - the length of which depends on the amount of time I have - and focus on that til completion.

It gives me a sense of satisfaction and gives me energy for the rest of the day.

I have a diferent problem: "can't stay focused on other things, and lost motivation for non IM activitys" .. No that's not 100% truth, but 50% truth probably

For now, it never happened to me to lose focus on IM, even on this time of year

    Hi Sissy,

I know where you are coming from. We all get those "down days".

Incidentally I started 2 threads recently which I think will be useful for you.
Hopefully they will get your motivation back.

@Sara Young - yes I think that is good advice. Last night I decided to catch up with my income and expenses records. Thats all I did, I had other stuff to do, but ignored it. I got into it, enjoyed it even! And then felt totally satisfied with myself, even though I have other stuff to do. It has made me more motivated to do the other stuff.

Now had I spent 10 minutes on this, 10 minutes on that I would have ended up stressed out and achieved very little.

I don't have children to worry about and I can imagine that is a difficult situation with interruptions. All I can think of to help is get the partner, mum or dad, a friend to babysit while you spend a few hours down the library getting your stuff done (if they have internet) or in a internet cafe or quiet bar, or at a friends house you know will be quiet and distraction free.

    Good luck!

Volunteer and step out of your environment; ie. what you know. Seriously. Get a sitter and go volunteer, and you will find so many people out there worse off, that you will feel refreshed and happy with your life when you return home.

Example: I am a volunteer teacher at a local prison for adult males, many with life sentences. You can't imagine their sadness and inner pain, especially this time of year with Hallmark junk on TV all the time of happy loving families all together in bliss that overcome everything in life within a 2-hour period that is just totally unreal.

Many people never get to see their children, work from home or reap many of the rewards we do. Get out there, interact and help give them hope, smiles and a will to continue.

Giving back can open many doors - -for your entire famly.

    Hi guys

Me and my hubby have a eight year old son and we manage pretty well as im rather organised. When i started out online i didnt have any outsourcers and i would work during the day whilst my son was at school or nursery and on an evening on the laptop whilst watching a dvd or two.

I find it easier to juggle now but earlier on it could be a struggle. I remember once taking on a big order for a client and working ever night until 4am and then getting up to take my son to school. I must admit i looked rather rough but i saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

You need to decide where you want to be and how much effort you put in will decide what results you get out of it.

So if you are reading this struggling to pay for christmas think if you put in that little bit more next christmas you will have money spare for the christmas period. You have to have targets of things you want to achieve or it just wont happen.

    kind regards
