Why are you selling my information???

It's no secret to most folks that know me, that I don't do video and don't buy anything that offers video training.

But, I've recently found the latest twist from the "big time" marketers, and it's another reason I won't buy your product.

I'm NOT giving you my phone number!

1) I don't want to be hounded by your boiler room sales people.

2) If I want to talk to you, I'll call you! (By the way, what's YOUR phone number?)

In the last couple of weeks I've looked at some programs that required my phone number. Since the names were well known, I went ahead and provided all info requested so I could take a peek at the offers.

Since providing my number, I've been Swamped with phone calls. Funny thing is, MOST were from outfits I've never heard of.

Bottom line: You're SELLING my phone information, and I don't appreciate it one damned bit!

Want my number? Forget it.

Pete

Absolutely agree. After being called quite a few times from Rich Jerk's "people" or people he sold my number to, offering me one on one tutoring that would break the bank, I never give out my phone number.

    Pete,
    Isn't it crazy...

I imagine they make a pretty penny selling the names...I know the New York Times used to pay upwards of $5 a name for some of their "lukewarm" leads...I can only imagine what some people would pay for phone leads that are from the "business interest" field...

    Thanks for the heads up...

Jack, one of the programs that they share the numbers with tries to sell a $5,000 mentoring package. Last I knew, they paid 30% to the referring party.

Last time they tried to sell me a $25,000 "mentoring" program... offering a few 'easy' payments. I told that I have money, that's not a problem, I just don't like their offer.

Since then I always put in the phone# field (if it is *required) this:

I have to agree with you there Pete

I bought a product a year ago and about 3 months ago I get this phone call out of the blue from someone saying I had bought their product and they wanted to help me make money. I told them no thanks, I earn my living online already from affiliate marketing and do fine. At which point you would think they would so ok, all the best. Instead they became very up in my face and asking for specifics and well lets just say I hung up their ass!

I find it rare that people do phone so i dont mine giving out my phone number when i buy a product if its parts of the shopping cart but yeah I think they should clarify if they plan on following up by phone

What a great idea. Get a prepaid mobile phone, have it divert to a $19.95 a minute "adult" line, then handout the mobile number EVERYWHERE.

Place ads everywhere asking telemarketers to call you.

Yeah, I don't like filling out any information these days with my phone number on it cause if it ain't my friends or family calling, I don't want to talk to you. Thank God for caller ID!

If I come across an IM site that involves making phone calls or receiving them, I move on. I want nothing to do with that.

Getting called is my least favorite method of being approached. I don't care if its something I'm really interested in, I don't like talking to anyone on the phone about it.

They usually call for some reason at the worst times then won't let you off the phone.

You are never obliged to keep listening or even holding the phone.

Best thing to do is get them to the point where they ask for your card details and then wander off for an hour or two while "looking" for it.

They will get the hint lol

And setting up a premium number for these calls is not illegal either, you should be compensated for the time you have wasted by these jackals.

Would you give your phone number to all your list members?

    Of course not!

So don't ask all your list members for their phone number!

      Interesting.

When my doctor called my wife after her wisdom teeth surgery I remembered it.
When a local resturant called to thank me for coming the night before I remembered it.

Yet if a guy called to thank you (not sell you) for buying it is a problem?

Yeah right. You may do that but not one of the spam phone calls I've received has been a polite thank you. When I do give out a phone number, it is completely made up. Anyone else who calls without permission is read the riot act and hung up on.

    Hey Pete,

I just happen to agree with you. I don't give my phone number out either. If I am required to enter my phone number into a field to buy a product or service, I usually enter a bogus number.

I feel sorry for the poor bugger who gets the calls, but I am glad it isn't me.

Totally agree. I never give my number anymore. If I can't get the information without giving my number then I just close the page and move on.

One time I gave my number to a very well known "guru" and the next day I was getting calls. I nicely told the guy I wasn't interested in buying a $2000 product and he said well you must not be serious about being successful cause if you were you would find a credit card or something to put it on. I just laughed and hung up.

I think you need to read a bit further on what can and can't be done when someone has their number on the National Do Not Call list. There are certain companies that are not restricted and may call like non-profits and those you have done business with in the past.

I've been on the No-Call list for years. Always renew when the time comes.

Having said that, I'm getting calls from people I don't know, about programs I've never heard of.

I very nicely told one guy "thank you, but I'm not interested. Have a good evening". and hung up. He immediatly called me back, and asked me; "If you're not interested, why the hell are you wasting my time?" To which I replied, "Wasting your time? I didn't call you did I?" and HE hung up.

Yes, for me it would be a problem. It makes me look for my phone (never remember where I laid it down), get up from my desk or sofa, and talk to someone I don't want to talk to. It's an intrusion. Send me a thank you email - I order online so respond online.

I suggest everyone start reading the privacy terms again - they've changed on many sites. The old "we will not share your info with anyone" has been replaced by a lot of merchants to "we may share your info with partners or related businesses". This change has been increasing this past year.

Like Mary, you insist on a phone number, I'll give you one...but it won't be mine.

When i first started online back in february of this year i got my hands on whatever i could one thing was a product for clickbank for legal reasons i will not mention the product name or person i got it from but needless to say i was asked to sign up and my phone number was required. i put my number in. about 2 weeks go by and i get a call on my cell phone as i am driving out of town to do some business and it is the company i got the "free" product from and they asked me all sorts of questions talked about some thing called credit card leveraging or some whacked out thing.after about 25 mins they decided i was not good prospect to keep pitching to so they said good bye and hung up. next day same call and the next and the next and the next until i finally said call me one more time and i will sue your ass. -no more calls.
i notice an awful lot of people using this tactic and i don't know how on earth they survive except to say people are desperate and even though something seems too good they still bite because what if it is not.....

from that day on i will not release my phone number except to my members in case there is an issue they need to contact me about or require some guidance or whatever.

i tell ya friends i sure learned some hard lessons right off the bat

I usually give them the number of a place I used to work at years ago. To prevent the staff from using the work phones for personal use, all external calls to that number get diverted to, wait for it...

Years ago I gave my number to a firm operating in the USA, thinking they would not ring me in Australia.

It was quite funny as I couldn't remember who this guy was when he rang and he got quite upset that I didn't recognise him as the greatest internet marketer in the world. The call didn't last long.

I've never given a valid phone number again unless it was to someone who I wouldn't mind a call from and that number is very, very small. Sometimes I am forced to put in an invalid number for something I really want to buy or subscribe to, as it assumes a particular format (U.S. I assume) and my phone number doesn't match the number of digits expected so I add or subtract numbers until it fits.

I wonder if that call ever gets through to someone?

The truth be it is that to build a house you need bricks. The old systems are making a great comeback after many marketers have failed at capturing leads the lazy way.

    Business is all about relationships.

However to call you and invade your personal space - No Thank you!

My ISP called me one day at 8pm - I told them to go to hell and how dare they call me at that time.

They said they work during those hours so I should expect a call from them I said you maybe working but I am not. They said they would cancel my account I said I couldnt give a $%^&%$$$%%

Credit card companies are the same. I told them I am happy you are recording my phone call and it should make for great training especially when I said I would burn their crap credit card and chuck it in a box till it incinerated and that I dont do business with liars.

Its a war zone when any company calls me.

You can always sign up for a free account at K7 Unified Messaging, free Fax and voicemail to email. and you'll get a voice message service with a phone number. Then you can just give that number out to people who you'd rather not hear from (you still have the option of setting it so that you'll get email notifications when you get a voicemail and you can listen to them online).

I think you lose the number if you leave the account idle for more than a month, but you can just sign up with a new account if that happens.
