Quite possibly the dumbest .com idea ever

This is probably the most idiotic website idea I think I've ever run across.

TechCrunch featured it a little while ago.

It's a social media site that you can sign up to, and register a credit card where it displays for all your friends the things that you buy with this card.

Then your friends can comment on the transactions, etc...

Whisky. Tango. Foxtrot.

      YOU GOT IT!

And its in no way different than any web2.0 sites with "useless, boring" personal content..it goes hand in hand and is in no way worse or more bizarre than the content on any random web2.0 site.

Lynn from TN is watching Desperate Housewives right now <---
Just got the new Slayer album <--
I just bought a burger from Burger King and got diarrhea <--
Check my new Youtube Video where i squeeze this giant pimple!!! <--

I think some of you people just didnt "get" web2.0....no wonder you think its bizarre to have a site which shows what someone bought

Now, do me a favor and go on facebook....and see how much of the content is actually EXACTLY that kind of stuff....

Link works for me also. I don't think you can hold him responsible in this case. Unless you feel that we should all be respsonsible for checking every link we post in various browsers before we post them here, I think it's best to chalk this one up to "weird techie glitch" and move on. We all make mistakes sometimes.

As far as the site...I guess I'm not surprised. We live in the age of icanhascheezburger.com. Who would've thought a site about humorously captioned cat pictures would've caught on so big? Not to mention all the niche sites out there catering to ultra specific interests (Fortysomething Bikers Who Love Mr. Belvedere Season 1&2, Before It Went All "Hollywood" And Stuff - Okay, I just made that one up, but don't be surprised if it exists already).

Did you ever think of doing a WHOIS on blippy.com? If you'd taken the time to do that you'd see that Michael is not the owner of the domain (which was registered in 2002 BTW) and that your accusations are indeed unfounded. As a new member to this forum you should think twice before making such a claim against someone with over 960 posts and who has been thanked by fellow Warriors for his useful contributions at least 345 times!

As for Blippy, it is indeed one of the dumbest ideas I've ever heard of, but as Zeus66 pointed out it could play well to an audience who considers American Idol and reality television to be an actual source of entertainment. The mind boggles at what will be next - perhaps a site that connects to your plumbing system to tell the world what you had for breakfast?

In software development we have a saying when trying to design "idiot-proof" user interfaces - it's impossible because they keep building better idiots! With that in mind Blippy may well be the next big thing.

This is a ridiculous idea. You can tell so much about a person through their spending habits... This is like trying to take the idea of twitter and combining that with your bank statements.

Although this would be quite useful for stalkers. So if you built a list of stalkers you might be able to profit big with their affiliate program. lol

It would be useful for stalkers and other criminals as well.

For instance, let's say "Bob" has an account. Bob wants everyone to know what he purchased. Bob purchases a really, really big TV set and it shows up on his profile.

A guy who wants a really, really big TV set notices Bob's update. The guy also notices on a Friday night that 5 minutes ago, Bob's account just logged a purchase of drinks at a nightclub that is 50 miles away from Bob's home.

The guy drives to Bob's house and steals Bob's TV while Bob is out drinking. Ta-Daa!!

I could think of lots of other scenarios to illustrate why this is an extremely bad idea.

It's so amazing how there are individuals who go to great lengths to protect their privacy, but then there are others who willingly throw their privacy away when it's presented to them as a "service".

Yeah. I can generally do that, but this one sort of takes the cake with me. I dunno that it's the generation gap, but definately the stupid gap.

Why on earth would people want to post their credit card transactions online for others to comment?

It sort of feels like something from Mike Judge's satire movie, Idiocracy... where the most popular show on TV is "OW MY BALLS".

Why would you do a lot of things, what the point in poking people on facebook? People will post, people want opinions on the things they bought, people want opinions on things they will potentially buy. I see this site being one big review site + a little bit of randomness.

Yeah because the governments are doing so well right now... If a young person gets elected into a place of power, who put him there, everyone in the state/town/city etc... Lets not generalize all young people into one category.

I'm generalising the trend. Privacy has always been a polite fiction. The younger generations are less interested in it than the older ones. Privacy as those born before the 1980s know it is dead, and what's left is dying.

So if you're at all interesting to other people, or you intend to do business, start betting on all your secrets and dirty laundry becoming public knowledge.

  • Maybe I'm just stupid, but would it not be
possible to surf around this site and see
what people are buying, and when you find
    something that's selling multiple times,
become an affiliate for that product if
possible, and start selling it yourself?

That's the main thing the old masters tell us
    in marketing 101 - sell whatever they're
    buying.

What better way to see what people are buying
than on a site where they blatantly tell you
flat out what they just bought?

Forgive me if I'm dense, and unsophisticated, but I
do officially qualify as an "old fart" now since my

    bad idea? lol. twitter...

    Hi Michael,

Why on earth would people want to post their credit card transactions online for others to comment?
    a) to show off

    b) to communicate/express themselves

    c) because they can(!)

    d) to help others know what's hot

...and how can this possibly be leveraged into profit via user generated content, for example -

    e) think of an incentive to encourage (top shopper award)

    f) let others comment on other peoples' purchases

    g) let them form groups and share info

    h) once the site is big, automatically integrate posts with bigger sites (twitter, facebook)

    i) crunch the data and make applications from it/sell it

I maintain - currently it's an oval wheel. But they're onto something. And personally, I'd rather be testing those type of sites than many of the worn out ideas peddled here (note 'many', not 'all')

The main thing to avoid is a resource-heavy money pit that can never be monetised/flipped.

The dumbness of the users and their keenness to waste time writing crap CAN directly relate to the profitability. In other words, the dumber the concept, the better the potential. That theory is on display all over the internet and TV.

All those truly original and great bands who took years honing their skills, trying to create a new sound that wasn't similar to others, writing beautiful lyrics.........

...stand absolutely no chance of real commercial success because some chav who won X factor singing karaoke with a silly hairdo, or some bimbo with 'made for TV girl next door looks that Dad appreciates' is dominating the 'pop' charts, and dominating the tabloid headlines...and twitter...and facebook...and making millions for marketers running phone-vote scams for lemmings who 'care'.

The world is topsy-turvy and often discards your brilliance without a second's admiration. But by God, if I can't succeed with my brilliance, I'll damn well do it with determination and mindless junk, like the rest of 'em.

No worries, soon marketers will destroy that site by making hundreds of accounts so they can use throw away credit cards to buy their own products to get exposure and backlinks.

      Just kidding.

But what IS a great idea about that site is that they actually know that every single member of the site has a credit card, and is willing to use it.

It's a crazy idea and one can only wonder what sort of people would use it. Socializing on web 2.0 sites is one thing but I think things can sometimes go too far.

This might actually be interesting to watch someone who has some money to blow. I might even pay to watch someone in hollywood burn through a couple 100k in a month, just to see how it gets spent.

No offence, but I think you've hit onto something there.

I'm just guessing, but looking at your avatar, I think you're younger than me (I'm 40).

As many people touched upon earlier, there are differences in the generations and the way that we think, and obvious reasons for it. Consequently, some of us grizzled oldies don't 'get' reality TV (for example) in quite the same way.

Speaking for old grizzlies forum-wide, many of us would say that life is too short for watching someone else spend money. There is only time for earning it, then spending it ourselves.

No offense taken. Maybe I should have elaborated more. While I am from the "younger" generation(and would find "reality" part somewhat entertaining), I would be interested more as a marketer. Depending on what information was published, and how wide the user base would become, someone could wrap this info into a database and run trend reports.

Social media has already given us more personal information to make our marketing even more potent by being able to narrow our advertising to very specific people. On top of that information, if I knew what a group of people regularly purchased, I could give them exactly what they already buy.

I'm guessing the hot sellers, in terms of volume, will be gasoline, fast food, and other common things.

Do people like showing off their purchases? Some do but I doubt it's something that would pick up. But as marketers we'd probably find it useful for spotting buying trends. Still though, it's quite silly.

Just another way to catapult you into the limelight I guess the 400+ Social media networks are not enough for one person to deal with daily.

This would be a great site for all those dumb celebrities at least they cant flog their own products with this method. I guess those that are really cash strapped can build a little affiliate site to Chanel and take commissions from publicly announcing their huge spends.

Why does everything in life have to be a competition who cares how much money you spent.

Everything seems to have a stigma attached to it where it becomes a I'm better than you motto.

I'm sure when the tax man looks into people's affairs it will be hard to pull a fast one over his eyes - why he has a list of your boasted purchases advertised to the world.

I will probably be using it to show purchases I'm making in wholesale goods to show how to build a 'big' income using my eBook, the source in my eBook, and my methods and tactics. I could just post on MySpace or a Blog or something (or I could do it all) saying

"I spent $300 on Zhu Zhu Pets, my Return was $750, I'm giving myself 15% ($112.50)"

"I spent $637.50 on "this cellphone", my return was $1200. I'm giving myself 15% ($180.00)"

Then building up until I'm earning $4k a week. (the percentage I'm giving myself will obviously change)

However, this website might make my transactions to appear to be more legitimate, as anyone could really just Say or make a Screenshot in MsPaint showing how much money they say they are spending.
