The Amazing Story of Cameron Johnson

Back in 1994, at the ripe old age of 9, Johnson launched his first business out of his home in Virginia - making invitations for his parents' holiday party. Word of his skills spread, and by the seasoned age of 11, Johnson had saved up several thousand dollars selling greeting cards. He called his company Cheers and Tears.

But the little guy didn't stop there. At age 12, Johnson offered his younger sister $100 for her collection of 30 Ty Beanie Babies, all the rage at the time. The young entrepreneur quickly earned 10 times that amount by selling the dolls on eBay. Smelling potential, he contacted Ty and began purchasing the dolls at wholesale with the aim of selling them on eBay and on his Cheers and Tears Web site.

In less than a year, Johnson banked $50,000 - seed money for his next venture, My EZ Mail, a service that forwards e-mails to a particular account without revealing the recipient's personal information. He hired a programmer to flesh out his idea, and within two years My EZ Mail was generating up to $3,000 per month in advertising revenue.

I'd watch that! Then I'd buy the DVD and watch it again.

I bought his book at Borders because it was $3.99. After I read what he had accomplished and went through the entire book, I was floored at how business savvy this guy was. Amazing.

      To your freedom and success,

I think the interesting thing here which has been highlighted by Troy, is not to try and figure out and do everything yourself. If I'd had my time again, rather than spending hundreds (uhhh, or thousands) on ebooks and courses, I would've spent my money on paying people who already know what they are doing to do it for me, copywriting and site design for example.

      Kinda sad in a way.

He should have been out riding his bike, throwing a baseball, or chasing frogs barefoot through puddles. Heck, when I was 9, I didn't even know what money was. We were more than happy building a clubhouse out of an old cardboard box (or the sofa cushions).

Yes, we grew up poor, but I soooo long to go back to those carefree days of innocence and wonder. These days it's all about work, money, bills, taxes and responsibility.

My only consolation in this story is that he must have enjoyed what he did thoroughly, as he kept doing it over and over again. It's important to love what you do, and that kid must have sure enjoyed making money.

Reminds me of Chas Tenenbaum, from that movie, The Royal Tenenbaums.

Sorry... I'm in kind of a weird mood today.

Back when I was a kid I DID try making money about a million different ways. I sold my family's castaway junk as a "broker" in garage sales. I set up Kool-Aid stands (cheaper and easier than lemonade, and a heck of a lot more profitable). I sold candy I bought wholesale to my friends at school. It was in my blood and I LOVED it.

I wish the internet had been around when I was that young!

Don't feel sorry for him. Sounds like he really loves doing this stuff. That's great for him!

Yes, I did that sort of thing in high-school... but not when I was 9.

Sounds like you that kid are on the same page. That's fine. Nothing wrong with that. I suppose it's either in your blood, or not. It wasn't in mine. Maybe I just didn't see the benefits.

After doing my chores, I'd go fishing, ride my bike or just watch television. My friends and I walked down to the county dump and recovered pieces of wood to build a tree house. Camping out in the backyard on the weekends were not uncommon. I didn't need money to have fun, and therefore I wasn't too ambitious.

These days, I'm trying to earn money to get BACK to those days of carefree living. It would be such a dream-come-true to go camping ocassionally, instead of working through the weekend. Fishing is something I haven't done in 3 years, because I've literally been working 6 or 7 days per week for past 5 years. Yes, fishing would be nice.

Long story short, is that NOW I'm motivated to become wealthy to achieve freedom. Back then I had it. Now I don't... but, I'm working on changing that one website at a time.
