8 Months & Still No Cash!!

Warriors,

I am just feeling a little low today.
I have been trying to grasp IM for around 8 months now. I started with zero knowledge mainly working with free Web 2.0 sites like Squidoo and learning as I went along.

I make a tiny bit of cash each month through Squidoo but not because of sales. I get a percentage of Squidoo's earning depending on the rank of my site.

I have now moved up to buying my first domain and learning how to build a wordpress site etc. I am writing as many articles as I can to get my new site some organic views. All of the views so far are from people who have linked from my EZine articles. My site is on Google and does get scanned by the bots regularly but I still have noone finding their way to my site outside of EZineArticles.

Is it still early days?

The site has been bookmarked and had RSS sent out to many sites. I have maybe 20 original articles pointing to the site so far. I also try to put a post on my site as often as I can.

I am not sure if I am doing anything wrong. This is the only place I know where I can be sure to get honest advice and information.

For any of you out there can you have a quick look at my site and give me your honest opinions. I am in need of advice.

So far my signature site doesn't seem to show up on my posts. I changed it and hopefully my site will show up now.

Thanks for your time,

Andy

How many articles have you written?

Is your site ranking for any of the keywords you are targetting?

Could be you don't have enough backlinks or the keywords you are targeting are too competitive.

I think you probably just have to keep at it. Keep writing articles and then submit them to all the directories. Then write articles that link to your articles. Then make hub pages, squidoo lenses, wetpaint pages, videos etc..... that link to your site and your articles.

Hello sharpturn. I am not an expert on websites, but from what i seen from yours it seems pretty nice.

I saw that you have been writing articles. Thats a great way to get backlinks. Are you only posting them on Ezine Articles? I searched for the best articles directories out there and found these you see below. If you have not post your articles, if you go the time, you should. Those are the top 20 articles directories. Hope this could help you.

I like your site but you are relying on your content to drive clicks to your affiliate ads. One way you could take advantage of the ezine traffic you are getting is by releasing articles that have links to your affiliates instead of your site. You can clean up the nasty affiliate urls by using a php header redirect.

        Code:
        <?php
        header("Location: h t t p  : / / your big nasty affiliate link ( dot ) com");
        ?>
Name the php file by the product name. In your link you put on the article all you do is write it like h t t p : / / fatburnerplan (dot) net/product.php

The best part about doing this is you still get a click to your site since you are hosting the php file. Also if that offer drops or you find a better offer simply change the link in the php file and all of the links you have scattered on the net will instantly update to the new link destination.

I would still link to the article source which is your site but in the content link to your products through a php redirect.

I agree with cashcow. You have to keep writing, keep submitting and generating more backlinks to your site.

Here's a tip: For new sites that are unknown the best way to get noticed is through guest posting IMHO. Find sits that are looking for guest authors and submit to them your very best material. If they like it they will publish it, resulting in not only a strong backlink but also traffic to your site.

You have to keep working hard at it, I know it can be demoralizing at the beginning when you are not making any sales, but keep working hard!

Well, your site looks good, thats a plus. It doesn't look cluttered or hard to read. I enjoy it.

8 months is still the early days, although I wish I was back on my 8th month and implement the stuff I know now. I'd be rich beyond my wildest dreams, lol.

You say you have 20 articles pointing to your site. Ok, you'll still want MORE.

Try writing between 1-3 articles a day, and submitting them to several different article directories (That is to say if you don't submit to multiple directories already).

Also, as your site looks something like a blog, ping it. ping-o-matic.com IT will help get a little bit of blacklinking going.

How are you with Social Bookmarking? This helps get backlinks going and get you indexed and higher in the search engines.

Do you have other forums you can place your site in your signature? You can never have too much publicity, unless its negative (*coughcoughtigercough*).

Have you considered CPV (cost per view) for your website? Its relatively cheap, and its good for testing if your page can convert (at least, thats how I do it. Not the cash for Adwords right now.)

Are you learning everything you can about this particular niche? You want to establish and market yourself as well.

    Just my 2 cents.

Thank you all for your help so far.

I am glad there are no negative responses to my site...phew!!

    To answer a couple questions....

    1. Yes my articles are ranking in Google.

    2. I think Cashcow is right in suggesting that maybe my keywords are too competitive. It is a competitive niche I think but I know a lot about it.

I really am confused with keyword research still.

I just put my chosen keyword phrase into Google Keyword Tool and see if I can make a long tail with a phrase that is at least 3000 searches EXACT.

Then I check the word in Google to see if there are many strong sites. If I think I can beat them then I check the phrase intitle:"PRASE" inanchor:"PHRASE" and if the number is under 10,000 then I go for it.

    Am I wrong here?
    Ahhhhh!!!!!

Fat burner has 1,380,000 direct competition.

You first direct competitor has a page rank of 4

29,300 back links recognized by Google

They come in at second place in the general search .

"free fat burner diet plan" is the closest lt I can find to fit your site . I admittedly done a very quick search .

Only 7 searches a day with 43 thousand direct comp.

I would suggest Finding some more long tails that are more obtainable and naming some sub pages after them.

Drive traffic to these long tails through article marketing and on and off page seo. Link all these pages to your main niche keyword but put products on these pages that can make you some quick sales or do my favorite of capturing information and then selling .

    Hey Andy

You've already had some good advice above. The one thing I wanted add is I think a lot of people would agree that 8 months is still early days to be aking money online, at least consistently. The problem is often bad advice in the first place, or having good advice but because it doesn't work for you the first time around, you then move onto something else, either another niche, or an other technique...or both, which effectively is like starting from scratch again. So stick at what you are doing and you'll be fine.

    Sharpturn -

I just gave this advice to another warrior here, but I think it will be of benefit to you as well. I would recommend giving SEOQuake a try, if you're not using it already as it can definetly help your keyword research.

SEOQuake analyzes each listing on the search engine results page - taking into consideration it's pagerank, backlinks, age and much more.

Basically, this amazing tool will help determine whether or not you can outrank your competitors and appear in the first page of Google.

I have found SeoQuake to be by far the most powerful and useful free tool that I have used to examine my competitors that rank in the top 10 in Google for the term I am targeting.

The key reason why I use this particular tool to find niches is because it gives me a detailed overview on the top listings and I can make a general assumption whether or not I can outrank my competitors for that particular term.

After awhile you get into the habit of identifying keywords which you rank easily for, and keywords that are a bit too hard..

    Hope this helps

You need a clear focus on your website. When first viewing it, I am uncertain as to exactly what you are expecting visitors to do. Should they be reading the entire page? Where is the offer? What is the product?

Keep in mind how quickly people browse the Internet. They aren't going to sit on your site for more than 5 seconds to figure out what it is you want them to do. Tell them how you can help, and then give them something specific to do.

Template looks very good. I did a quick look at the indexed articles listed in G.
    use this in search bar
    site:fatburnerplan.net
    And you will get..
    Results 1 - 10 of about 16 from fatburnerplan.net. (0.20 seconds)

I would say you need a lot more articles or comments/discussions.
Try seoblog from Jeff Johnson to help with your blog. Also the wprobot free plugin versions will help fatten your post count a bit with out looking automatic. You have put unique articles from you there, you can add to it without penalty. The other comments about competition are correct. Try to go longtail as this niche and/or product has some really fierce competition. Maybe try a product comparison with another or more than one product that you can rank for. You may draw for the lesser known product and get conversions for the competitive product as a bonus.

I personally would say after 8 months you should be further down the road than you are. Looking at your site there is a lack of focus which is a reflection on your internal struggles.

In many ways its a volume game, you need to ramp it up i all areas, and quickly learn what that will involve. Its not just about getting more content, or more links, or more sites etc, its about having a clear strategy, and its looking like you don't have one.

There are a few problems here.

#1 fat loss is an info seeking niche. People will read all day but there is so much information on weight loss on the internet they dont want to pay for anything.Trying to get this to convert through article marketing is difficult. You may make some sales but I can tell you from experience its a low converting niche as far as articles are concerned.

#2 The links on your landing page link to other articles. Consider sending them to the sales page. Each click to somewhere else is going to lose you buyers. write your landing page like you would an article and drive them to the salespage and not another article.

If people are coming to your site from ezine articles I would not send them to more articles, if they have clicked on what you wrote on ezine they are already interested, so send them to the salespage, instead of more articles. I can tell you they will just click away if you do that.

#3 if you are trying to get organic traffic you are going to find it very hard to rank for a lot of keywords in that niche. Its very competitive and you you will have have a very hard time doing that.

if you want to see how hard it is to get this product to convert through article marketing try this.

Get a cheapo info domain for 99 cents or whatever and put it on a redirect straight to the sales page. put up ten articles or whatever on EZA and send them to the info domain which is going straight to the sales page and see how many sales you get.

Personally I would try a different product to promote.

I have to completely agree with jazbo here. At the 8 month point, you should be a bit further along than you are. A few things I see when looking at your site. First, the design looks great so cudos to that.

Secondly though, you seem to be in an extremely competitive niche. weight loss is a tough niche to crack, and depending on the keywords your targeting, I can completely understand why you may not be making any sales.

If I were you, I might try a different angle with this one. Look to see if you can find any ezines that may specialize in fat burning and weight loss. In those, I would put a squeeze, preferrably with video to begin capturing leads. It may cost you a couple of hundred dollars, but I am sure it will give you better results then what you are geting now.

Also, instead of completely focusing on an seo componenet with this one, I would try to target more of a web 2.0 approach with social networking sites like myspace, blog catalog, and mybloglog (facebook i wouldn't worry about to much). Also look at posting videos on youtube and posting your youtube videos on your blog. When you post, make sure to ask you friends to tweet you, digg you or stumble you (I love stumbleupon).

Once my traffic went up, i could do a few things. I could monetize my site for advertising. I could put adsense on it (but once I got some decent advertising, I may want to take the adsense off though.) I could also promote different fat loss products on my site with reviews, not just one.

I know its kind of a long post but I hope this helps. I did something similar to this on a site of mine and took it from a feww dollars to about $1000 per month within about 90 days. Not a ton of money, but a nice little supplement to what I make from other projects (and every dolllar adds up)

What you could do is use a wordpress plugin called onlywire. You'll need to signup to the website, and all the associated bookmarking websites it submits to. When you set this up everytime you make a post on your blog it will automatically submit to the major bookmarking sites. This will get you backlinks to each post, plus get the bots to index your posts pretty quickly.

The fastest I've had success with this is about 2 minutes or something around that time for a post to be indexed. The results will vary, but it should help.

As mentioned above, the weight loss crowd doesn't jump on every offer they see. They are a bit jaded and have been there and done that.

I started out just sending them to a sales page straight from the article and the conversion rate was terrible.

Then I took a different approach and sent them to a squeeze page with a free report and e-course that lasted 3 months. That is when things started to improve. For me, establishing a relationship in this niche was the answer. Once I did that, the money started to flow.

I'm going to go a different route, and say it's not about the site and the twenty articles, it's about 8 months and what have you accomplished?

The harsh truth is I could put together a site and 20 articles in a day. One Day. Not one week, not one month, and definitely not eight months.

At this rate, you're not likely to succeed. You have to be willing to fail faster. The only thing that will make you money is lots of action. You can't think about it, you can't dream about it, you really have to do it. Like Nike says, just do it. And do it, and do it, and do it.

Take a look at something like Getting Things Done by David Allen to help you get organized. You have to get more done, and quickly. Your site doesn't have to be perfect, you just have to keep plugging away.

        That's just my opinion.

The weight/fat loss niche is based on trust and building a relationship with your clients. In my opinion you're better off sending them to a squeeze page where you give away a free ebook/report where you can over deliver, show them your personality, and also show that you care.

You have to give in order to receive. I've written several articles in this niche and it comes across better if you use a pen name (probably best to be female). These guys don't have credit cards ready until you:

    1. Build trust
    2. Give away some decent and valuable info
    3. Get them involved and build a community type feel by using questionnaires etc

You have a nice looking blog, but it's a bit commercial with 3 banners plugging products as well as multiple links to the affiliate site.

In essence I think you're building a list for the vendor and not capturing emails for yourself.

Send people to your blog from your autoresponder and within your free ebook. I'm not convinced "sniper type blogs" work in this niche and it's far better to write articles that directly deal with people's problems in a genuine way rather than writing with your "affiliate hat on".

Studying your EZA articles, you will need to target more long tail and less competitive keywords in your titles and build backlinks to them.

I notice links at the bottom of your blogs: Free Cell Phones, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, & Verizon Cell Phone Deals, Best CD (Certificate of Deposit) Rates - Top 20 Highest Rates and Domain Names by Omnis Network which are probably been placed there by the theme designer. I'd either choose a different theme where you don't need to show these links, or make them no follow.

First, I'd like to thank everyone who's commented here. I was scrolling down, to see what I could add, and I soon started taking notes. This is useful information!

In addition, I think MRomeo09 hit the nail on the head. I also agree that more long-tail keyword articles are the way to go as you write more (and fail faster), learning with each success and disappointment.

Eight months is still very early in the game, with just 20 articles pointing back to your site. That's not so much about the months, but the volume of work in it.

If your schedule doesn't permit you to do more than that, this may be a very slow process for you. Something might click, but if we're looking at numbers and percentages: 20 articles in one of the most competitive fields online... that's not even close to what you need. 200 might make a dent in the competition, but even then, you may not see the results you want.

No matter what, long-tail keyword research is vital. I'd look at keywords/phrases that include four-word phrases but still get moderate traffic. Seriously, all it can take are ten people per day who find your website, see that it's exactly (narrow niche) what they've been looking for, fall in love with it, tell their friends, and buy everything you recommend. (Think in terms of "1000 True Fans" <-- search for that article online if you aren't familiar with it.)

Competing in the broader market is a quick route to disappointment.

      1. Choose two or three long-tail keywords/phrases related to your market.
      2. Write lots of articles about them, some of which you add at your website.
      3. Narrow the focus of your site -- or a hefty section of it -- to appeal strongly to whichever phrase seems to be bringing them in. (If you're using WordPress, also use the Psychic Search free plugin, to see what people are looking for.)
      4. Repeat from step one.

A few things came to mind when I read your site:

    1. The site looks nice, but there's nothing on there that would compel anyone to stay. "Fat Burner Plan Welcome" should be changed into someone more compelling. Even the pre-sale is very weak.

    2. I've read some posts that stated you have a "nice site" and all you need is traffic or targeted traffic. I've been converting traffic across a wide variety of niches and have tested traffic in the millions and can tell you that is horrible advice. A nice site doesn't cut the mustard, especially in the niche you've selected. You need a site that gets your visitor to take the desired action that you want. I would put more effort in delivering content that almost forces your visitor to give you their e-mail address so you can build a list.

    3. You're in what I like to call a "hyper-competitive" niche. With an abundance of products and competitors your website looks very cookie cutter in a sea of mediocrity. The site design itself is quite "nice" but it's not designed to convert. I've been in the weight loss, fat burning niche and you really have to know what you're doing in terms of the whole pre-sale, sales funnel and back-end marketing strategy to compete.

    4. Build a list and offer some solid content, you're literally hampering yourself by not doing this. This blog needs an opt-in form. You also should add an exit-pop up to increase your opt-ins. Yes, contrary to what some people write here they actually do work and they work well.

If I were in your shoes I would hire a coach / consultant who already has a profitable business in the niche you're in and have them first help you design a strategy to compete in this very, very competitive market and then design a strategy and sales process so you can compete with the big boys. Good luck,

    RoD

Andy, congratulations on being so brave as to "put it all out there".

    Nice look... nice wordpress integration.

    Here are my thoughts.
    • You are a small fish in a damn big pond. You need more pages and more content. You have 18 pages of indexed content. How fast are you churning it out? Churn more.
    • You have 3 inbound links and none from authority sites.
Those are the absolute 2 most important things I can tell you.... Work on your content... network within your niche. Get to know people and get links from the authority sites.

It's hard work and it isn't magical. To build a long-term, sustainable site that will survive in Google is hard work.

    Best of luck.

May be this will help: Try to create value for others and forget about making money for yourself. You will gain experience in value creation and later you can figure out how to "make" money.

Its spooky... but you create more money in the long run when you focus on value creation instead of focusing on making money for yourself.

One fact seldom mentioned is that there are thousands and thousands of marketers writing and submitting 3 to 20 articles each day (many using an article writing wizard, etc.), so be aware that there is a lot of competition. Also the "weight loss" catagory is hightly competative, as you are surely aware of. It is not an easy "game".

But your efforts appear good actually, and should progress if you can just keep at it. Best Wishes........

Do you work a full time job?

If you do, you may need to spend even more time on IM. 8 months as a side project is not the same as 8 months working IM 8 hours a day. Increase the volume, increase the hours, increase your learning.

    Wow!!

Thanks for all the information guys.
My head is about to explode with all this various information!!!

I admit, I am slow at this, and in the 8 months maybe I should know more about IM but I am doing the best I can right now.

Just to clarify, I have only been working on this fat burner website for around a month. It is my first site so it isn't like I opened up Wordpress and knew exactly what to do. Everything I do is new.

Anyway, I really appreciate all your advice. I will try to figure out how to implament some of it into my campaign.

This Internet Marketing is a real battle of staying power isn't it? You really need to keep plugging away and even more so when you have very little money coming in!

    Thanks everyone

I'll give you one of my secrets: use the AdWords tool, put in some of your keywords and find key phrases that have 1,000- 3,000 monthly for local search volume. Then install the SEO Quake Firefox extension, turn it on and search Google for each key phrase that falls into the 1,000- 3,000 range.

Look for search results with BOTH of the following criteria:

      1. At least one result from an article directory or other web 2.0 property (like Squidoo) in the first 20 (page 1 and 2) results.

      2. Use the SEO Quake tool to view the Yahoo Page Links (not Domain links) for the first 10 page 1 search results. If you have at least 3-4 results with single digit backlink counts, you have a winner.

Ignore the number of search results. If you find a keyword that meets both criteria above, you have a good shot to rank on page 1 with an article on EZA, ArticleBase, etc.

I'm getting ready to do a video on my blog on how to do this. This is the best method I have found to quickly find rank-able key phrases.

Read some *real books* on the topic for article fodder.
Your site looks very clean which is a big PLUS.
Submit your articles to lots more directories. Outsourcing can help you get this grunt work done faster if you can afford it. (Check out edesk, getafreelancer, odesk, etc.)

      SHARPTURN,

      Hey man, listen.

You've gotten some decent advice here.

There is one thing that doesn't seem to have been addressed.

I took a semi-thorough look at your site and backlinks.

Your main issue is that you may just be misunderstanding the backlinking strategy. I know, because I was once in your shoes.

The problem is, a lot of folks misunderstand it.

You are doing some things right like submitting articles with anchor text backlinks of your keyword. Excellent!!!

However, there are not enough of those backlinks for each page. According to Yahoo Site Explorer, it appears that you have about 1 article backlinking to each page.

Every page has only about 1 backlink. There is no way you will rank on the keywords that you are using with one backlink to each page.

Also, the on-page SEO isn't focused enough. Each page shows multiple keywords in the META tags, but the page only mentions the keywords 3 or 4 times.

      THE SOLUTION:

      Here's my suggestion.

Google shows about 10 pages of actual content.

Take just one page per day and do the following.

      1) Improve on-page SEO. If you don't want to add more content, at least optimize the pics and the links. Although visitors won't see it, the 'spiders' will. Increase the density of this page's long-tail phrase.

      2) Build more backlinks with your keyword as Anchor Text. The place where you put these is up to you. Just build them correctly, which means, have the Anchor Text match the keyword that you are optimizing the target page for.

      3) Improve the Sales flow. If you were a customer, who your page easily lead you from information to buying. This requires a level of copywriting expertise. Check out your competitors to get an idea.

Hey, we all start off and this SEO/SEM/IM stuff can be a lot.

This is a simplified version of how I have gotten my pages on the SERPs pretty fast.

Hope this helps a little more.

    8 months?

Man I worked in Internet Marketing for 4 years.. and just this year I finally did $10k.. So don't give up.

It pays off with time. Just put a clear goal in your head. And try to find a niche that there isn't too much quality competition. It's way easier to make money.. when your competition is ****ty.

    Warriors,

Thank you all for the comments. This advice is helping a lot. I am taking notes and trying to put it all together. First I gotta figure out some of the jargon..lol.

Yes, I am struggling with SEO and getting backlinks. I actually get confused with it all probably because I haven't got a set strategy.

    Thanks everyone,

    Warriors,

I have changed some of the things that some of you guys mentioned. I added a large "Click Here" type button on the front page to force some extra clicks. Not sure if I'm doing the right thing but I guess I can check my stats in a week and see if there is any improvement.

I don't think I am very good at promotion. Yes I bookmark and RSS to loads of sites and my articles are spread around but as most of you have said my backlink stats are crap!

I'm not sure if I have to locate authority sites in my niche and write on their blogs or sites?

niac7, mentioned that I have one backlink per page. I am not sure I understand how to improve that. It is explained but I don't get it.

Anyway, I am still pushing forward. There are a bunch of lights at the end of this tunnel it's just that they are a little faint right now.

    Thanks,

    Andy

There are quire a few ways to produce more backlinks. You could write more articles with anchor text to the page. You could comment on relevant blogs with your link in anchor text, etc.

The thing with backlinks that most folks don't seem to get is that the backlinks don't really count until the Google 'spiders' visit the pages where you backlinks are located.

I've tested the mass bookmarking schemes and out of the multiple sites that I submitted my link to, I only got backlinks from a couple of them. Mainly digg.com. Digg gets crawled constantly and is a perfect place for your backlinks.

Maybe you could find some relevant Digg posts and comment on them. Digg may be nofollow though, but I haven't checked.

That being said, you should have a target for the number of backlinks that you are placing. It is crazy to try to get 1000 backlinks, when you may only need about 50 to topple your competition on the first page.

Plug your competition's URL into this website: backlinkwatch.com

It will show you all of the backlinks for the URL and also the Anchor Text, if any.

You want to see how many of their backlinks have your keyword in the Anchor. This should give you some idea of how many Anchored backlinks you need.

There are other methods of getting backlinks. Some, I won't reveal yet, since I haven't had the opportunity to personally test them, although I have seen proof on other sites of their effectiveness.

It's much slicker than what a lot of folks are doing. Once I test it myself, I may let you know.

      Good

I think YOUR site looks ok, but the "Fat Loss 4 Idiots" site -- that you are directing people to click to -- is kind of crazy. The fact that I had to click through multiple screens to get to a place to buy is not a good thing. Most people will back out by that point. I think you might have more success by promoting a Fat Loss product that has a clean, straightforward sales page and a clear offer.

Just do this: Write an EZA article, submit it with a resource box going to your Squidoo for your affiliate program. Then, write another EZA article that goes to your WP blog. Add Adsense to that WP site with one affiliate link on the main post above the fold. Make sure your initial keyword in your titles is under 30,000 searches in the Google searches with quotes. That should get you indexed shortly and at the very least get you some clicks on your Adsense. Hope that helps.

    Hey,

I think it comes down to constant action towards a defined goal. I heard that the average person that tries internet marketing lasts 120 days!!!! People get frustrated and give up....that's why only 5% of the people make it...Keep going. Get better, solve problems and keep moving.

If you been doing SEO. Try new markets. If that doesnt appeal, try something else. PPC, PPV, or Offline to Online (VERY PROFITABLE). Also join a coaching program if you got the cash. I dont know which coaches are the best though.

Keep posting on your site using long tale keywords and do what Troy_Phillips said above get the email address and do your selling using e-mail. Most people are not going to buy the first time they visit your site so just getting traffic from the search engines will not make you that much money unless you capture their e-mail address.

I think the problem may be that ...

... maybe people are not searching for a "fat burner plan".

They are looking for a "fast results workout" or "lose weight fast".

So maybe if you had another domain, totally optimised for the big search terms
    - the high volume terms
...then maybe you would have the traffic.

Of course ...if you already have the traffic, then you just need to work on the copy

...or change your affiliate ID due the "clickbank issue that is not an issue and we
don't talk about it here but if you have 0 sales and know you are getting clicks
and if you change your affiliate ID (create a new one and change you links ) you
will have sales" - that issue.

    Best.
