add-on domains can cause issues with some scripts
add-on domains are a security risk if a hacker gets in
add-on domains make it harder to maintain a server

That is just a few but the security issue should be enough to make you take a few minutes to setup cpanel for each domain...

I personally use dedicated but I have a great deal of sites and large traffic on some of those sites..

I would say a reseller account would be best though ...

Depending on what your needs are I would say Reseller, VPS then a dedi. If you are like me and need managed web hosting then support should be your number 1 priority over cost. Stay away from unmetered webhost.

The key phrase in all of these replies is 'it depends on what your needs are.'

If you are running sites which only attract a few tens or hundreds of visitors a day, then the chances of you attracting the attention of a hacker are tiny. Buying a separate hosting account for every domain is expensive, particularly if you go down the dedicated or reseller route. I have several sites which are hosted as add-on domains and have never had a problem.

All my sites are Wordpress sites, and tracked using Google Analytics. I have a separate FTP app for uploading files. So I rarely need to go near CPanel. When I do, having add-on domains creates one more click to get where I want to be - not exactly complicated.

I use both. I use add ons for sites I'm keeping for awhile and reseller for sites I'm selling pretty quick.

I also use both - I prefer my reseller account as I like to have a cpanel for each site (just makes things easier I guess) but I have an account where I use addons as well. If I had to choose between them I'd definitely go for a reseller account.

With its own cpanel, you can get a unique IP. If it's an addon, you can't.

Let me see if I understand this. I currently use CPANEL for about 10 domain names all related to the same subject but no duplicate content. I also have 2 separate hosting accounts with 2 distinct providers (hosting).

For example...if I sign up as a reseller account with GoDaddy, will all my domains I host under be given unique IP addresses even though I own all of the separate accounts?

This is better for SE optimization correct (having different and unique IP address)????

      Thanks.

The IP makes no difference as many claim .. but if you want different ip's then yes you can have them by paying $1 or $2 a month or whatever the hosting provider charges.

Let me put it this way... A host has 10,000 accounts/domains on 1 server/ip - Do you hosnestly think that only 1 site will rank good because the other 9,999 are on the same ip ?? LOL .. That is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard.

If the above was true millions of sites would never rank because the fact is compared to shared hosting, dedicated servers and hosting is used very little. Yes I have 2 dedicated servers and many others have dedicated but my point is compare that to shared hosting I would say shared hosting is used probably 80% of the time.

What? Is that true? I've never heard that before. Can someone confirm?

Yes an add-on domain can not have its own IP .. it is an ext of the domain name...

Great post - I had created an add-on domain but not yet done the file transfer - but after reading, I'm going to get it's own CPanel.
    Thanks

If you decide that a reseller account is the way to go, don't let price be an issue. My reseller account was only about $7 a month because of a coupon code. Without the code it would only have run around $10 a month. Many warriors are paying more than that every year buying how-to eBooks.

    James,

I am still confused (call me dumb). So you are telling my that the IP issue is only a "myth". I have 3 sites that are top 10 on the G right with many more domains to develop within the same niche. Google will not penalize me for these 3 sites having the same IP address with the same type of content (**not duplicate***but same subject matter). I ask this because, again, I have alot of website domains I want to develop...basically trying to take the top 10 goog results to myself with 10 different domain names and unique content. I was under the impression that if I hosted these under the sub account they would somehow be figured out by google that they are the same business and penalize my sites.

      Jim,
Yep it is another one of those myths.. I have well over 500 websites and 350 of those are on the same IP and I have no trouble getting none of them indexed and ranking well ...

How does google know your ip ? better yet how does google know if you are the same owner of said site ? - They don't ....

These myths are seriously unreal and this is why people are told to test ...

Duplicate Content Penalty - A Myth
No Follow Gives no Juice - A Myth
Submit Only to Do Follow - A Myth (you are losing business too)
PR means better rankings - A Myth

There are many many more myths that just lurk about and this is normally due to some idiot that wants to make money off someone that is scared of myths.

I just switched over to cpanel for my domains. It was a pain because I had everything on addon domains which are, I think, sub domains. I also had sub domains for that one domain. Best bet is to get a reseller account and have an individual Cpanel for each to save you the trouble later. You might want to expand to a dedicated server which, for instance Host Gator, will help you do, but not with a shared account.

sub-domains are not the same as add-on domains... Actually using sub-domain names can be very powerful..

I am lost. I have these sites all under hostgator but they are different domain names. I control them all in the same cpanel. For example:

When I want to check stats for XYZ.com I login under my main ABC.com account and in the stats checker, in reality it says xyz.abc.com

One of my websistes once showed up in google like this:

abc.com/xyz but it fixed itself to show only the .com after 2 weeks or so. I was a little nervous about that.

They are all hosted on one hostgator account. Is this OK?

Those are add-on domains and there is a huge and I do mean huge security risk .. Many want to do it to save a few dollars. Well you are freaking marketers and if you are really a marketer then spending a measly little $25 a month for a reseller account should be easy.

The reason why this is a huge security risk is because if one domain gets hacked then they have access to all of them. If you have different cpanels for them and one gets hacked then that is as far as they get.

Thank you James! I am not that big of a techy but I will figure it out. I wonder if I will lose all of the data I have on all these other sites during the switchover.
