Why I hate friggin ebooks

Bought a copy of Ad Magic from BKV. $30 including shipping to get it to me and then another $40 to have it printed at Stinkos so I can read the thing without having to be latched to the computer.

No more for me.

Try getting one of those ebook readers.

    they are pretty overpriced

i use a handheld PSP and just installed a pdf reader on in.

and i just upload all the ebooks i want to read on it.

you can probably find a cheap psp at your local gamestop.
and always get the warrenty if they are used

I knew that PSP would come in handy some day. Never even thought about this. I'll be doing this right away. Thanks dude.

Kinko's/FedEx Office isn't always the cheapest printer in town, despite what they may have you believe in their ads.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

On the other hand, if you get at least $70 worth of value from the ebook you're STILL ahead of the game! =

I know what you mean, though. On the other hand, as much as I hate squinting to read ebooks on my iPhone I'd rather do that than carry around something else, so ebooks are still my choice.

I know what you mean Jay, but you need to get a lot more value from it than that to make it worthwhile.

      What about the time invested?

As an example, if I don't get value worth at least 5 times the cost of the product, then it is a dud. At least for me.

      Sam

P.S. - Also if it ain't worth printing out, it ain't worth keeping!

wow, you read on your iphone? how do you do that? I read about 2 emails and my everything is blurry when I look up, it's really bad for your eyes, the iphone. I can sit at a computer screen for hours with no complaints though

Just wait for the apple tablet to come out

I'm with you on this one. I'm more inclined to scroll than I am to flip pages causing me to miss material.

Simply print it out, and put it in a 3-ring binder using a hole punch. I use dividers to divide up eBooks.

Frankly everyone seems to bitch at the price of ereaders. For what the Kindle, et al. do 250$ is NOT much. Especially when you consider you can get a lot of new books (new as in publish date) for less than their physical counter parts. And with the ability to handle pdf/doc/text/mp3, I just think it is a good deal. But, if you don't see the value, then of course it's overpriced. And you are paying for a much larger screen as well, also a plus.

Maybe it's the season but I hear a LOT of people in general complain about the price of things.

What did they do Tim, print it on gold?

I buy pre-drilled (3-ring punched) paper a case at a time for less than 1 cent per sheet and print the ebooks on a laser printer - another 1 cent per sheet. Then I stick it into a binder. (Binders are 8 for $11 at Sam's Club.)

That's $5.38 for a 200 page (printed on one side) book in a binder. If your laser printer can print both sides, you save another $1.

    Think cheap, Tim. Think cheap.

Why did an ebook have to be shipped to you?

I prefer reading on paper as well. Forget the video upsell and offer me a hard copy shipped to me for about $25 and I would buy it most of the time. A condensed cheatsheet/plan is also worth paying extra for.

I use a highlighter and make notes.

        And have a slow printer.

Hey guys sorry I was at the cigar lounge and just got in.

The ebook had to be shipped because it came with several MP3 files as well. I told them I would download it but they said no dice.

The document was 411 pages total, I had it back to back at .098 cents a page. Plus the binding it was a tad under $40. So total I am at $70.

Not totally over ebooks (I have thousands) but to me higher value with video, MP3, etc.

Plus this book rocks (came highly recommended) but I find less is more with me these days.

So, was it 411 single-sided pages, which you had copied to 206 double-sided pages? That would be $20.19. In that case, they charged you almost $20 for binding? What kind of binding was it?

I am not a huge fan of reading E-Books online, I like that idea about printing them.
I was actually thinking about making an E-Book on Internet Marketing (clearly not the first to do it...haha) Maybe not....

The Kindle now natively supports PDF. No more crazy conversions are necessary. I love mine and I'll never print anything again. I'll just email it to the Kindle...or transfer via USB.

Plus, I can carry tons of books with a tiny "footprint" that's thinner than one book.

    I love ebooks!

    Here's why:

Ebooks adds a whole new level of diversity to the products I can buy and for that matter sell. Sure there are a lot of crappy ebooks out there, but there are also a lot of great ebooks with information that would never have been published if it wasn't for ebooks. Ebooks allow me and others to become our own writers and publishers. It has never been as easy as it is today to publish your won material to the world at large. In my opinion that is a great developement, even though there are no filters on the quality of the material that hits the market.

As the OP suggests, the ebook does have it's drawbacks. The simple fact is that printed books offer some advantages that ebooks will never be able to offer. The ease of publishing comes with a lot of tradeoffs. C'est la vie!

In the greater scheme of things I believe that the pros outweigh the cons by a big margin.

The Kindle and the Sony reader both look cool, but they aren't that much cheaper than a netbook or a bottom-end notebook - and you could do so much more with a netbook than just read e-books.

But as for printing the e-books, I have a shelf full of them, as I prefer to read on paper than on the screen. But I've never paid that much to print one. I just use my laser printer, in which I refill the toner manually so it works out to a fraction of a cent per page. I manually 3-hole punch them and place them into binders - I often group a bunch of small e-book with similar subjects (i.e SEO, Twitter etc) into the same binder. I buy the binders with the covers that let you insert a cover page and spine, and I use the printer to print these out as well.

As a result I have a whole bookcase of IM books and another one with technical books, at a fraction of the cost of the printed ones.
