Can you end-run Amazon's kindle network?

Have any of you distributed your ebooks in Kindle format without going thru Amazon and giving them their huge cut? I have been reading about how you can convert a pdf to Kindle format. But these questions make me wonder if this strategy is even feasible...

1) Are Kindle users saavy enough to download ebooks into their Kindle without going thru Amazon or is this a tech support nightmare waiting to happen?

2) Is this legal for paid content?

If you have pulled this off, or if you have crashed and burned, talk to me!

I'd rather give Amazon a cut and get a chunk of their massive traffic. But if you have plenty of traffic available already, good luck to ya.

Agreed, Taylor, we just want to saturate our own reach first. This is not time-sensitive material so we can take it slow.

Yes, it's legal. You can simply email the document to someone's kindle email. The recipient may have to pay a fee to amazon - that's amazon's call.

Kindle DX and Kindle 2 readers both display native PDF - no need to convert. There's no zoom (yet?) on the Kindle 2, so the text ends up being a bit small, but it's still readable (to me, anyway).

Ah, way better than the USB cable route. I suppose they could even download it and then email it to themselves. Thanks for the info!
