How NOT to use blog commenting

I have a blatantly commercial blog. A few days ago someone left a comment, pointing to a site in a similar niche. Fair game - it was a reasonable sounding comment, so I approved it.

In the next half hour, I was left 3 more identical comments, from different ip addresses, all pointing to the same website.

I spammed them all. Including the original.

I always found that blog commenting was a great way to get some additional traffic. It should be obvious, however, that you won't get any additional traffic if your comment is a blatantly spammy attempt to promote your own site. If you don't care enough to provide any kind of value up front why should people believe that you will provide any value at all when they go to their site.

I know, that you might just comment for the backlinks, but is that a viable strategy at all? I mean, how many blogs are really "dofollow" blogs anyway?
