Comment Etiquette Question

Being new to IM, I've been told that one of the best ways to drive traffic to my website is by posting legitimate, constructive comments on sites that are related to mine.

My question is about how to do this appropriately with a link.

1. It it only for when someone clicks on my name for the hyperlink to my site (e.g. when the standard wordpress comment dialog asks your for your name, website, and email, and then makes your name hyperlinked to your website).

2. Or is it supposed to be something in the text. For example, is it proper to reply with a comment like:

"Well that's a great idea. But on my blog I have a post on a different method to fix the xyz problem. You may find it useful"

(where the underlined text here would be the link).

Thanks.

I did the second one whenever I really had an alternate solution, free downloadable **** or an article/post to offer.

Make sure if the blog owner checks your in-text link, there really is something good for their visitors/readers.

To be really effective, I have seen comments that go on longer than the original blog post. Really- read the post, and give back as much as you can. The more relative content you can provide, the more someone will be persuaded to allow your comment to go through. Your content will help them. A one or two liner with "my site is better" will likely not do as well.

I understand your point and I agree. I was just using that blurb as a sample. The real issue I wanted to focus on is the appropriateness of putting a link back to my site, and if that's what people are talking about when they say to use comments to drive traffic to my site.

When you don't have a... let's say, 'alternate solution' to make a link to - just add good quality content, as Jill said above.

I know from my own experience that many times I ended up on blogs following someone's comment on another blog. The comment was interesting, thought-provoking, so I became curious to see who the guy/gal was.

So then basically you just let them follow the link that is in your name on the comment (e.g. like the standard wordpress example I gave in the original post)?

If your goal is to get the actual readers of your post to click onto your site, it's probably a good idea to entice them with an offer, such as a free download - as long as the owner of the blog/site you're posting on allows it. Otherwise, you could just promise some extra information. In such cases, you might as well use your url to link.

If you're looking to use the link juice from the blog to help your own site's ranking, you should generally use a mixture of url links and text links. The text links should be for the key words you want your site/page to rank for. So, if you wanted to rank highly for the key word "best weight loss plan", you should work that phrase into your post and use that as your text link.

Not sure about effectiveness of blog commenting. On my blogs, comments containing at least one hyperlink are authomatically deleted

Interesting, thought-provoking comments coupled with a good offer or a freebie will be a good one. People loves it when they get free stuff. =)
