Screen Recording for Mac?

Hello guys,

I am searching for a Camtasia Studio alternative for Mac, to create my own tutorial FLV clips.

However, I cannot find any that allows me to:

a) user a free hand drawing tool while recording, so I can draw with my mouse on the screen

b) encode on FLV format

On my old PC, I was doing it all with Camtasia Studio, but on Mac I cannot find any decent alternative. Any ideas? thanks!

See OmniDazzle for doing stuff on the screen while recording:
    The Omni Group - OmniDazzle

And ScreenFlow won't encode as FLV, but that's not a requirement anymore (for general web video). ScreenFlow encodes MOV files as H.264 and those will play just fine in JW Player, Flowplayer, etc.
Screencasting Software - ScreenFlow Overview - Telestream

    I hope that helps.

  • Thanks guys, but none of those softwares has a free hand drawing tool as I record my screen, which is VERY useful for onscreen presentations.

Thanks a bunch Jay, I really appreciate it!

The reason as of why I like FLV is because the output usually takes less space and therefore it's faster to load on my website.

I know what you mean -- I just cut some files almost in half by converting to FLV. However, the decrease in quality was very noticeable.

Also, sometimes you don't save as much as you might think. I just tested converting a MOV to FLV using ffmpeg and it went from 9MB to 7MB. But the quality suffered.

So then I used VisualHub (cool tool that's no longer available) and the resulting FLV file looked VERY good. However, it went from 9MB to 12MB. =

Until recently I always converted to FLV but am now just going with MOV/H.264 -- my experience has been those end up looking better when uploaded to YouTube, too.

  • Man I've downloaded over 10 applications an none of them actually offers those two simply features: FLV format + free hand drawing alas Camtasia Studio for PC (the Mac version doesnt allow free hand drawing).

WTF?? isnt Mac supposed to be the best video editing platform out there?

Screenflow and Snapz Pro X are pretty good, but Screenflow is more flexible...

    Hi AA,

.FLV isn't a supported format in QuickTime, so any app which uses QT's encoding engine won't be able to output to .FLV. However, H.274 is now the default format for .mov files on the Mac and that works fine with most online streaming services.

As for drawing on-screen, there is no Mac screen recording app that does that, although Camtasia for Mac does have a neat Smart Focus feature which zooms in on the area of the screen where the pointer is.

Don't pull out your old PC, install parallels or VM ware on your mac ( I like parallels) an d then you get the best of both worlds. Get an OEM copy of XP to keep OS costs down and you're all set...

I can vouch for VMware, runs my Windows apps flawlessly. You could also use Bootcamp if you have an Intel Mac. Good luck!
