How should I price a flyer to go out with product?

Hey Warriors,

I have a physical product that I sell and I'm thinking of maybe adding one or two flyers to go out with each order from companies that have products that are highly related to the product.

The problem is, I have no idea how much I should charge them or what method.

Anyone done a JV of this type?

If so, what is a good way to price for them to advertise?

I hope I'm making sense. If not, please let me know and I will clarify further.

Thanks!

  • One way around this would be to set up an affiliate account, buy a unique domain name which redirects to the affiliate account, and then advertise your new domain on the flyer.

    That would make it more likely that you'd get the commissions and you wouldn't have to deal with the hassles of selling advertising.

      I would love to do this, but the good companies I'm finding don't have an affiliate program. It's unfortunate.

        This is just an idea -- I'm assuming that your product has a website, even though it's physical; if not, get a domain name and put up a quick Wordpress blog:
        • Build a couple of "test" pages on your product's website/blog that have a well-written article or review about each of the related products;
        • Track the traffic to the pages so that you have some hard stats to use when you approach the related product owners.
        • Find out what websites/blogs for similar products in your niche are charging for ad space on their websites/blogs.
        • Use that price to sell ad space on your "test" pages;
        • Charge a similar additional rate for space in the flyer OR charge a multiple of the rate because the flyer will be going to proven buyers.

        Hope this helps!

    Yes, I already have a one page sales letter page/website. But I don't do ads on it, just the main product only.

      If you don't want to mess with your sales site, you could call a couple of newspapers and find out what they charge for "display ads" of varying sizes that include a product photo. The related product companies are probably familiar with the cost of newspaper display ads, and they're not cheap.

      In fact, call a couple of newspapers in the city where their headquarters are located -- you can even price slightly lower and use that in your pitch..."Your Hometown Newspaper charges $xxx for display ads, which are not niche targeted. For only $xx, you can have a similar sized ad delivered to a proven buyer...".

      If they resist based on price, you could try offering an "introductory price", with the understanding that the ad price will revert to the regular price after a certain number of flyers.

      Maybe just by starting the conversation, being flexible and proposing the idea as a "win-win" opportunity, you can reach a price that's agreeable to both sides.
