Do you think you are a Person of Influence?

Being a part of this widely-popular Internet Marketing industry, one would often wonder why some people can manage to be successful and on top of their game and some, unfortunately, are not? Why some people can easily close a sale why others are having a hard time getting hold of his "potential" partners?

According to the best-selling author John C. Maxwell, anyone who wants to be successful in any endeavor needs to work on his or her influence on other people.

So do you agree or disagree on this? And what does it take to be a "Person of Influence"?

Why are some offline salespeople good and others below average - The same can be said of doctors, lawyers or accountants - the 80/20 rule is prevalent.
20% drive the industry and excel at what they do and 80% are below average.

That's life and I accept it.

Regarding whether I'm a person of influence I believe that in this industry it is far more important that my sales page is regarded by the major search engines as a site of influence. - There's cash in that

    To your future success,

    Hello,
I have been in sales in one form or another my whole life.
I have taught many others how to sell as well.

This has brought me many pleasant memories of seeing some
    of my proteges being successful.

Now if I could just get my kids to listen to me,that would be my
    greatest success story.

I know, right?! Kids these days are the "spoiled generation". As comedian Loius CK aptly said on his interview with Conan, "everything's amazing and nobody's happy".

Influence is far more important than a search engine ranking!!

Influence is essential and can be easily learned by studying material produced by experts.

Some people fail to close sales, probably because their only concern is closing sales not to help clients. Just my thoughts.

        Hi Hanako,

And what does it take to be a "Person of Influence"?
My personal opinion is that it requires you to develop your communication skills so that you can effectively and professionally communicate the passion that you have for your subject of expertise, thereby connecting with those that have the same passion within them.

By communicating effectively on that subject, you will be able to help people to understand their own passion, along with the actual subject, and therefore they can make connections between the two. If this is achieved, you are then seen as a leader and a person of influence.

The key is that you are leading them towards something that's very positive - achieving their goals in alignment with, and via their own passions.

Woops, I'm not sure that I communicated that effectively...

Very great insight. Family and positivism, two very important things that money can't buy. More people should focus on that. We tend put in so much time in our work that more often than not, we regret to spend time with our family, the main reason why we are working hard in the first place. And positivism basically reflects who you are, hence, my favorite quote "You attract what you want".

I agree. I believe people can actually feel how "insincere" one can be. I don't mean to be a braggadocio or anything, but with the organization I'm currently with, we really listen to our "partner's" need. [we don't call them clients since they are basically our business partners. ] We will find the best solution for them even if it may mean less sales [and less commission ] for us. At least in the end, we have gained long-term partners who will grow with us.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. Focus on helping people and the money will come. With a sincere desire to help you can never be confused for someone that is just out to make a buck.

I read something that one of my mentors wrote one time where he said that if you focus too much on making the sale or if you are desperate to make money it sort of comes out in your writing. I have a few theories on this but all I know is that it works for me.

As far as being a person of influence...only to my dog and my kids and right now that's good enough for me

Ha! That would make a great sig line.

What exactly is influence anyway? I recently had someone use his "Influence" to con me into doing some things that benefitted him and his family, and he didn't bother keeping his end of the deal, which left him with absolutely NO influence in my eyes. Yet, he goes around telling people all about how to influence others "positively" (which only means getting the outcome YOU desire, not really having their interests in mind)

Gave me a bad taste for the man, and I'll probably never do business with him again, and I'm hearing similar stories from several other people who have had past dealings with him.

So, is influence based on integrity? and if so, what happens when integrity is compromised? Looks to me like you lose your influence.

      so there.

I agree with what maxwell said,

I am not sure if persuasion fall under an attribute, or, skill. However, if I could have only one attribute, or, skill it would be persuasion. If you can influence people you will never starve. This goes for face to face, behind a screen, on tv, radio, etc. ...

Study master persuaders. 48 laws of power is a good read to see how deep the rabbit hole goes with this. How to win friends and influence people by dale carnegie. Read biographies of world leaders. Learn from actors, pitchmen, and, sales people on tv, radio, radio personalities, sales print. Check out reccomended books by copywriters in the copywriting section of this forum. After all, they make a living trying to persuade. Put your 10,000 hours in to master the skill as Malcom Gladwell eluded to.

In short, lots of reading, observing, and, implementing.
