Do Follow or Not Do Follow that is the question!

Is best to add the no follow attribute to links contained in an article that is submitted to a directory?, if not will the wrath of the "Google Gods" be brought down upon said directory.

All opinions on this issue are greatly appreciated.

do follow and no follow means nothing but many will argue with that because they have no bothered to really test.

I assume you are wanting to add no follow on the links on your article directory ? If so may I ask why ?

Well i have tested and yes nofollow does do somethings like help preserve pagerank (which today is pretty much just a number that helps you sell your site for more or get more for a backlink... not really a rankings factor like it once was)... but I have found that nofollow has done nothing for actually helping anything rank better for me anymore. I test a lot and personally the only thing i use nofollow on are direct affiliate links and the "home" link on my sites. I do the home link to ensure the index does not get keyword credit for "home"... but i no longer nofollow anything else. Just my 2 cents worth.

Given that you link to an article directory in your sig, I'm answering this as if you want to know if you should "no-follow" articles submitted to that directory. If I got that wrong, skip to the next post...

Regardless of the SEO effects of the tag (and I happen to trust James' testing on the matter - it matches my own casual observations), a lot of people still believe in it.

Making a point of NOT adding a no-follow tag could garner submissions from authors who might otherwise pass you by.

Another casual observation of mine - the "Google Gods" as you call them get suspicious when a site has links coming in, but all the links pointing out are no-follow. It just isn't natural. In their minds, things that aren't natural are usually done in an attempt to manipulate the results - something they do frown on...

On a side note: I usually don't get mixed up in these follow/no-follow threads anymore, but your subject line was so damned clever I had to take a look. Well done...

Thank you Warriors your answers have been most helpful and have convinced me to remove the "no follow".

Warriors rule, may the grace of the "Google Gods" go with you.

Special thanks to JohnMcCabe for the kind observation (Side Note)... Fish on my friend.
