Becoming an Affiliate Manager

If I wanted to become an affiliate manager, what are the best courses to take?
Is there a one-in-all product/ebook that offers step-by-step guides to do this?
Maybe even some online schools?

If you can recommend something, I'll appreciate it :-)
Best,
Tammy

Why not just manage yourself and keep all the money?

      Hi Dexx,

I guess I failed to explain myself. That is exactly what I want to do.... manage my own affiliate program, but I know I don't have all the skills and would like to learn how to do this. that is why I was asking for a course or ebook to learn how to be an effective affiliate manager.

Where did you come up with the idea of becoming an affiliate manager, and what do you "think" that kind of job would entail?

It is not what I think that kind of job may entail. It is that I know there are several aspects to successful affiliate management and I just don't have all of the skills/background, but would love to learn.

I know a couple of people that make a great living managing affiliate programs for others. It is impossible to do it all. Affiliate managers run programs, don't create or develop products. So, I was wondering if there is a course, program, ebook or something out there, where I could learn all the basics for running successful affiliate programs.

Even to coordinate graphic designers, programmers, copywriters and the like, and to keep track of split tests, conversions and ROI -amongst many other things- for a seamless operation and successful launch as well as on-going revenues, one needs a guide-map and learning how to do it right... hopefully somebody out there can provide me with a great resource to learn this.

      Thanks!
      Tammy

I think the best thing for you to do at this point is to dive in and start your own marketing system. It's not as hard as you may think once you have a product people want to get their hands on. Then you have to build a selling system that 1) attracts prospects, 2) builds opt-ins, 3) Converts subscribers into paying customers, 4) Delivers purchased products to your customer.

Once you have the system in place and making money for yourself you'll then be in a position to start taking on affiliates.

But if you don't have a system in place yet that converts traffic into customers you're going to do yourself a HUGE disservice if you start up an affiliate program. Folks don't like wasting their traffic on sites that don't convert into cash.

So go ahead and build your selling system and once you have it in place you'll find running your affiliate program is a breeze.

    You'll need a 1) Great product, 2) A squeeze page, 3) an autoresponder, 4) follow up emails, 5) a sales page, 6) a download page.

To test the system you'll need to provide traffic of your own to it. The best way to do that in my estimation is via social networking. But others at the forum may disagree with me on that one. As for myself I can only recommend what works for me.

There are so many free tools and information that can help you get started. I guess one of the things that you want to be sure of, is that you don't fall into the informational trap that many newbies fall into. Basically you spend all your time looking at information and then get pulled off track at the next ting and then the next thing and so on and so on.

Much of the direction that you decide to take will depend on your cash flow and available money that you have to put into YOUR business. Thats, another thing, this is a business and you have to treat it like one. If you treat it like a hobby like some make the mistake of doing, you will surely fall into that trap if you are not careful, so be careful.

When I first started out, I did the Article Marketing route as far as advertising once I found my product. I used what is known as bum marketing. Meaning, its so cheap even a bum could afford it..

You can check out the owners website for a free course of your own and receive all the training at no cost here:

Bum Marketing Method - Free Traffic Tips

I hope that this helps you as much as it has helped me in the past.

Great luck to you & your success!

Tammy, Did you check out the AC Certified course? I'd be interested in your opinion.
They are now offering personal coaching to become an AM which I've been looking at, but have my reservations as I've seen a number of negative posts on this forum about Anik and Lurn Inc. The coaching is expensive at 5k upfront and an additional 15k from profits once you hit 150k.
If any one has any information or opinions about this course, the guys involved, or on the opportunities available as an Outsourced Affiliate Manager I would appreciate your input.

        Best wishes

I have completed this program. I cannot recommend it at this time and I would discourage anyone from taking it.

Believe it or not as long as this post is -- what I'm about to write is actually brief. I won't even come close to providing the list of concerns I have had.

              1. It has been very hard to get them to keep the agreements they made and some of them (even though in writing) were never kept period.

              2. The actual online component of the training was not very new -- though the video pitch touted it as hot off the press -- newest offering. Instead it is a re-purposed affiliate management course that was previously sold for 1995.00. The content was pretty good but mostly common sense. I completed it in four days without difficulty scoring around 92 percent. That's not really saying I'm particularly smart -- just that the course was not that hard.

              3. There are 8 webinars a couple of which had some great content. The others ranged in quality from ok to dubious. It was like pulling teeth to get my hands on those webinars. The certainly were not delivered during the "12 week training period" and it took many phone calls and broken promises on lurns part to finally see the last few.

              4. The coaching was provided by a decent guy who clearly makes his living online but has never been an affiliate manager. Not his fault because he was hired to basically ask questions about the webinars to see if you understood them. I did and 1/2 way through the coaching he said I knew the material cold and was ready to be introduced to clients -- in his opinion. He called and told my contact and my contact said he'd get right on that. This was back in late March. Still hasn't happened.

              5. It says in the contract that they make no representation of the quality of leads they'll provide. Believe them. I can fully understand why they have that clause in there. The pdf they finally sent me after weeks of promises of something I'd really be pleased with was a few links to job search sites and some specific 5 to 7 dollar per hour odesk listings. This was most definitely not from any pool of Lurns existing clients waiting for graduates to hire.

Why would anyone pay 20,000.00 to a company for leads that are the result of a web search my 10 year old nephew could have done?

Frankly I think this accertified program is just a cheap knockoff (albeit expensive) of Jeff Walkers Product Launch Manager training idea. While I believe Jeff really does have a bunch of warm clients to match up with his students -- based on my personal experience with this course and dealing with lurn I don't believe the situation is likely to be as noble with them.

Here is the philosophy I had with my IS (information systems) business. If I was not going to perform 100 percent for everyone and had to break commitments because I was so busy -- I'd procrastinate getting quotes out to prospects who were not yet customers instead of making my existing customers suffer. When the new prospect complained I'd apologize and explain that I'd rather they were offended with me, not having invested money, than offending an existing client who already had. That they they could vote with their feet and neither of us would have lost much love compared to what happens when I don't follow through with someone who's already paid his/her money and can't just go elsewhere so easily.

My impression is that Anik may have the opposite philosophy. Based on my experience with Lurn I think its a fair assessment (at least in my case) to say he's more focused on getting the next launch out of the gate than making sure he's done the job he promised to customers who've already paid.

I can only agree with what George writes about the AC Certified course. I would say don't do it. At least not for a commitment of $20,000.00.

The leads database they were supposedly opening up on April 1st of 2010 is not ready. Or at least no possible customers looking for Affiliate Managers are in there.

All you get for leads is Job postings loaded up on the AC Certified LinkedIn Group. And my impression there is that most members are Lurn employees. And I can find those type of postings myself.

    Hey Tammy,

you might want to look for Jeff Walker's Product Launch Formula and his Launch Manager course. They're both expensive products, but well worth it. PLF is being relaunched soon as version 3.0

Here's the site I found for the Launch Manager course:
    The PLM Formula Case Study

He also runs a directory for Launch Managers. You might want to have a look there, see if you can get listed too:

Hmmm and the AC Certified course looked interesting too.

Our affiliate program is in-house and I don't remember taking any courses just read whatever information is available - and there are a good number available.

My end I work hand in hand with the other teams in terms of planning product, marketing strategy and writing autoresponders and creating sales pages.

This way as the affiliate manager I have knowledge about the product and the program that I am tasked with finding affiliates for.

    Just my 2 cents

    Regards all

      Cezar,

I think you do not have to take this expensive course from Lurn. While you do learn some good things in the course that will help you do not have to pay that kind of money for it.

After all affiliate management is like sales management offline. I mean there are certainly similarities as far as responsibilities, reporting, motivating and finding the right staff goes. So getting familiar with the subject from another angle may help and cost much less. And there are forums, etc. these days where you can learn a lot too - and that all for free.

      Cheers,

      mtkman
