What to charge for Videos

In small towns (25,000 or less pop) I've noticed not many restaurants have websites.

And, with Video being "Hot" right now, here's what I'd like to do;

1) Set up a website Directory for a town
(ex: MyTownsBestRestaurants.com)
2) Go to a restaurant and tell owner I'd like to make a Video of his restaurant showing photos of the outside, inside and plates of food at NO OBLIGATION. If he likes the Video, we can discuss cost, later.
3) Take photos with digital and make video with PhotoStory or Muvee or Movie Maker and create a DVD.
4) Purchase portable DVD Player (Phillips at WallMart for $80) and go to restaurant and show owner my video.

5) I would place the video on my website in the proper category for his food (Family Dining, Chinese, Mexican etc) and promote the site locally (Newspaper, Radio, Google Maps and whatever else I can think of)

Now....these would be 60 to 90 sec videos with appropriate background music and text. I'd make a "Video Skin" for each restaurant with address, phone, description, hours, etc

Now....WHAT should I charge for this?
1) Initially?
2) Monthly?

If anyone has any experience with this or knows of someone who's done this, it'd be much appreciated.

Thank you,
Midas Man

If I were you, I woudl setup different "packages" with pricing steps. Like package A will inlcude....blah blah blah, package B will include..... blah blah blah. That way if gives you an opportunity to upsell. Also Maybe include upgrades. People like the ability to upgrade.

I would figure out what you want to charge per hour, and then figure out how much time the videos will take and the add a charge to it. so like charge 50 dollars an hour, say it will take 3 hours to complete and add a 50 dollar service charge for various things. for a total of 200. Maybe start package 1 at 99.99 and increase 50 dollars a step or something?

Not a bad idea. How 'bout this ...

Find a local business to create your first video series. Offer this business a free service just so you can create a website where you can post this video series.

Now, check through the local Yellow Pages and email a short offer with links to these videos to the owners.

Offer to do them (monthly, if possible) for, say, $350 per 60-second video shot.

That's a lot cheaper than they can get via any other traditional method. Offer to post on YouTube and their own website for an ongoing fee.

You'll have a customer for life!

        Regards,

Thanks JR....$350 is what I've found to be the "magic" number. I'm now testing various "Monthly Fees" for Residuals.

          Thanks,

I would also shoot low at $200 or even $150 until you have built up a couple videos. You got to count your losses a little and think of it as a way to get your word out. When first trying to get leads I have found that starting the price very cheap is a good way to start something up. A lot of these owners have friends and then you can charge more.

I know someone might bash me for this, but might even consider doing 3 for free.
That is just my 2 cents.

Be EXTREMELY careful of this tactic as it can pigeonhole you as the cheapest in town and you will always attract opportunistic customers from then on. Remember you are solving a huge problem for the business owners - make your time worth it from the start. I have started, built and continued many businesses and this was my one mistake I wish I could have reversed on all of them. I would say $299 or $399 is extremely fair. I know there is another guy doing something like this for $99 bucks but he quickly builds up to the next level with people.

The thing to remember about restaurants is that each customer you find them is not really worth that much to them. You might want to even consider caterers or halls as a customer as each customer you find them (which is the problem you are ultimately solving for them) is worth WAY more money.

I have no agenda but to help those in the same situation. This I feel will pay the bills.
