working under a IM company - Need advice

Dear all,

Need advice, before sending my resume to one of the IM company. Do you think it's better to let them know all the stuffs you know? [Link building strategic, video marketing, etc]

Or just let them know the 'basic requirement' will do?

My main purpose is to go them and learn to 'sell' to customers [Not very good in selling, start to panic easily when meeting customer. ] and converting sales marketing skill that i need.

Hope that I can get the reply from them and eventually getting the job. It will be great for me.

Any advice?

Hey Spark, if I understand you correctly your going to be applying for a job with an IM company in your little island.

So most likely if you send your resume and they don't see you have much experience in IM they probably wont hire you.

So I think its best to list all your IM talents on the resume to assure you get the job.

Once you land the job you can start working on selling customers.

    Good luck

Are you applying for a posted job opening or is this a "cold call"?

If it's the former than summarize your IM talents in a bullet-point format on the first page of your resume. Detail your experience, and then your education on the subsequent page(s). Remember, if they have posted a job they may receive dozens or even hundreds of applications. They will usually just skim over them to narrow down their selection to a few qualified individuals, so make sure the key points you want to make are on the first page.

If it's the latter then include a cover letter explaining your talents and how you would make a good fit for their company.

I would not in either case mention your aversion to sales. A resume should summarize your strengths, not your weaknesses.

Good luck with your job hunt!

Guys, thanks for all the help.

Yes, i am applying for a posted job. However, as the job mention about having experience creating website, etc.

Do i need to give them the website that i did? Don't really feel comfortable letting them know what i am doing..but since they mention in the posted job. i have no choice but show them the website?

Well it really depends upon how much experience you've had. If they want experience "creating websites" then you could outline your design skills, like PHP, CSS, XHTML, JavaScript etc.

Is there a specific reason that you don't want to show them your work? If the sites you designed are on the public Internet (as opposed to a private Intranet) then why wouldn't you want them to see your work? Isn't that like an artist who doesn't want to display his/her paintings or a musician who won't promote his/her own music? Are the sites you've designed in a niche that may be considered offensive or in bad taste?

As it is a posted job you need to consider that many other people may be applying for it. Your task is to stand out among them, at least enough to warrant an interview. If you have created something your are proud of and that represents your talents you should not be afraid to show it to them.

Just my two cents - bear in mind that I have been in the position of hiring technical assistants and programmers many times and have read many resumes and interviewed many people. Personally I'd want to see what you are capable of before I gave you the job.

Just give them a basic overview of what you done not detailed. I mean what you know, what you specialise in and any innovations you done to make site ranking better.

you seem like a good person, but look at what you have written,

"I want to take from these people and have them teach me how to sell one on one, but I don't want to give anything back in return ?"

It is the season to give and only in giving shall you receive.

Yes, and i supposed that bringing them cash should be more than enough? Of cause i will give them what i can do, provided i got the chance to do so?

I am not hiding anything as my created sites are legal just that i create are my personal E-commence sites [They might 'turn off', since i am not 100% working on the work that they gave] -> unless i have to lie that i am helping my family and friends?

Yes, Will write the good points that i have for the job to at least justify my salary and the work.

Thanks for all the help. Cheers!

Any advices if any will be good too.

      Thanks!

One last piece of advice - don't ever lie about anything on your resume or during your interview! Seriously, this is the worst possible thing you could do - it will come back to haunt you and will damage your professional reputation.

Your byline says you live "on a small island" - not sure where exactly this is but I too live "on a small island" (Oahu, Hawaii). In an industry like this word will get around. Trust me on this, I've seen it before.

And you don't need to feel that you need to hide your sites or your existing online activities. Anyone seriously considering you for the advertised position will completely understand, in this industry it would almost seem strange if you didn't have your own online efforts. If your sites are an illustration of your talents then you should be proud of them.

Again, best of luck with your job search.
