Essential Wordpress Plugins

Hi Warriors

I'm going to be doing some blogging using Wordpress. I've set up a few blogs before and have rarely used plugins. This time I'd like to create my blog the right way from the start.

Which plugins do you believe are ESSENTIAL when you start your blog? If you could provide links to download them too, that would be great.

Thanks,
James

  • The plugins you use depend on your theme choice.

    I like

    Ban IP
    Hana Code Insert
    Google Analytics
    Google Site Maps
    Ninja Affiliate

and for spam I prefer WP Spam Free.

I run a network of Blogs and have an arsenal of about 40 different plugins I use for different projects.

I can highly recommend if you are not using plugins to investigate using them... amazing what you can do with a handful, a good template, and WordPress.

Be careful to test any plugin that relies on any kind of third party tracking or a call to an external server. If that server gets bogged down it can stop your pages from loading fast enough for your visitors.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet:

      WP Super Cache
      WP Minify

If you're not careful WP can get painfully slow, and you'll start losing visitors because it's taking your site forever to open. You don't necessarily notice the problem on your own machine because your browser has the site cached.

Do yourself, and your visitors, a favour and add WP Super Cache at least.

    A few time-savers:

contact-form-7 - to make a contact (or any other type of) form really easy
privacy-policy - to make a privacy page with one click.
robots-meta - sometimes I have pages that I don't want indexed and this makes it simple.

Save time all around and manage your plugins with ease using Plugin central as well.

If you install a lot of the same plugins and multiple blogs regularly, that one is a dream

WordPress plugins that you should have:

    1. All in One SEO Plugin- It automatically takes care of generating meta tags and keywords for your blog posts.
    2. Advertising Manager- It supports the Open X ad marketplace, which means that you can configure it to show only the highest CPM ads.
    3. Add to Any- With this plugin, your visitors can quickly add your blog post to the most popular social bookmarking directories in the world, or email it to friends.
    4. Akismet- It acts as a spam blocker for your blog.
    5. Google XML Sitemaps- It makes high quality sitemaps automatically that can be indexed by Google. A must have if you want to rank high in Google.

It's only been mentioned once but WP Super Cache is 1 that i would definitely use. A lot of WordPress pages load really slow due to where they are hosted and the Super Cache plugin can really help with this problem.

Other than that, i always use

All in One SEO Pack (or Platinum SEO Pack)
        Google XML Sitemaps
        and
        Contact Form 7

I think MaxBlog Ping Optimizer is essential..at least for me. I constantly update my blog pages and that plugin has saved my blog from being flagged as a spammer blog.
