Speculate on what happened...PayPal dispute

About 2.5 minutes after someone purchased a product a dispute was raised in PayPal for the purchase claiming "it wasn't me" .
Does this sound legit?

    Hi Scott

I've seen this occasionally happening but they've actually been flagged by PayPal itself, not the customer, which explains the speed.

There was another thread about this sort of situation earlier this week.

    I'll try to locate it.

    Cheers,

Yes, that's another possibility, that the email address is on a watch list.

I had a discussion about this with a PayPal rep a while ago and they
explained the process to me, sort of.

They do watch accounts for suspicious activity and if they think something
is going on, they will flag the sale immediately.

Then they investigate (usually turns out to be a fraudulent purchase)
and then you get your official "this sale is no good" email.

      Pretty standard stuff for PayPal.

I don't even give it a second thought anymore.

Paypal has a LOT of safeguard triggers in place and little-to-no transparency behind what's going on "behind the curtain."

It can be frustrating, yes. But you learn to work around it.

The absolute best way to do so is to actively communicate with them. Just like Steve demonstrated.

But as many will tell you, even that's not good enough sometimes.

I've been accepting payments through PayPal for 10+ years and never encountered a disputed payment until a few months ago. PayPal immediately decided to categorize me as suspect because after refunding the client (only informing of their action after the event and telling me I had "no recourse"), they also whipped $150 out of my account and are holding it in escrow to cover any future disputes.

          Indeed.

With all payment systems, the risk is dumped well and truly at the door of the merchant.

PayPal isn't really any different in that respect and better than some, particularly for digital products where they often side with the vendor, unlike some "digital product" payment processors whose finger is permanently posied over the big red "REFUND" button.

          Cheers,

Sure. If somebody hacked their account and they then got a receipt,
they'll send in a complaint right away. I know I would.

And, it could also be a serial refunder.

No way to know 100% for certain either way.

    Me neither.

Anyway, if the customer didn't instigate it they usually come back with an alternative payment method.

And the scary thing is, I'm thinking of doing a physical product launch with
these people taking my money for me.

      Now how scary is THAT?

        Steven,

I sell physical products using PayPal as one of the ways customers can pay. Since they are physical products that require shipping there are no "instant gratification" pressures associated with the purchases. So refund rates are not the same as digital products where customers can be struck with buyers remorse within minutes of making the purchase.

Additionally, if we haven't talked to you on the phone we don't ship. We provide a 1-800 number so there is no cost to the customer to verify they want the product. They want the products and they are happy to verify over the phone they want the products. The proccess goes pretty smoothly.

This system works for the level of orders we get and we get very few refunds. Less than 1%.
